First, the verdict is still out on if Charter Schools actually work.
No, the verdict is in.
Some appear to be doing extremely well. Some appear to be failing.
For every charter school that outperforms the average public school, two charter schools are outperformed by the average public school.
Some Charter Schools are
....free to pick and choose the best students while leaving special-ed students to the public schools, who aren't free to "fire" an "underperforming" third grader. And what they didn't tell you in Waiting for Superman is that the high-performing charter school in NYC had a massive endowment from donations from the parents of Ritchie Rich.
Charter schools are about two things: breaking teachers unions, and diverting public money into private investor hands. Period. That some charters manage to perform well does not change either of those two facts.
The truth is that they've finally got an excuse to finally fire misdemeanor level bad teachers. Felonies were, until this, the only way to get rid of a teacher, short of the completely unfair harass until they quit approach.
Bullshit. There is nothing about unions, teachers or otherwise, that prevent workers from being fired with cause.
They didn't need a supermajority. The entire 2008 Democratic Platform could have been passed via reconciliation if necessary. They chose not to, most tellingly with the extension of the Bush Tax Cuts.
And Obama could have gotten the votes if he was willing to make them be there. Sure, politicians sometimes vote against their own party - but not on cloture votes. Filibustering your own party's president was unheard of since the time of the Dixiecrats.
Obama chose not to pressure the Blue Dogs. Probably because Obama is himself a Blue Dog in fact, if not in name.
Pedantry that doesn't refute the parent's statement. The 1st Amendment is meant to protect our freedom of speech and assembly from government interference. The 4th Amendment is meant to protect us from unreasonable searches & seizures.
Either way, neither of them are at any imminent risk of being turned over to the US.
Assange has stated that he will voluntarily return to Sweden if they promise not to hand him over the U.S. Rather than making such an easy promise, TPTB have put Assange's attorney on a terror watch list instead.
Which stopped once he got off the drugs and started acting normal. And by normal I mean not looking and acting like a homeless guy sufferring from PTSD and yelling at everyone.
Ohreaaaaly? If today's voter suppression laws had been in effect in the 80's, St. Ronnie might not have been able to cast a vote in either of the elections that put him in office. Because he was born at home and had no birth certificate until 1991.
While I would argue Iran does not have a firm commitment to that policy, I wouldn't say it is US propaganda.
Of course it's propaganda. Guess which country in the Middle East has the highest Jewish population after Israel? That also has Jewish members of Parliament?
Ahmadinejad has made too many anti-Semitic remarks to mention here so here is a handy list by year
Which starts with the well known sophistry of "wipe Israel off the map", a debunked lie. Between that and their support of the 'Ground Zero Mosque' ban, the ADL has zero credibility.
Indeed. That's why, as with most things with Reagan, crediting the Gipper with the fall of the Soviet Union is a joke. Because every time we'd rattle our sabres, their citizens would naturally rally and patriotism would increase.
It's no different with Iran. Every time we talk about bombing them, the mullahs should send us a thank you card for extending their rule.
You admit government is corrupted by big business. So by giving more power to government you are giving more power to big business. The big businesses use their control of the government to snuff out competition from small businesses.
Doubling down on the false dichotomy with different words.
It's not like Apple sells things besides smartphones....oh wait....In the smartphone market, they are getting killed.
In some alternate universe where companies would rather have marketshare than profit? HP still sell far more computers than Apple, but who makes more money doing it?
Except it's not. Things are as worth as much as people are willing to pay for them. If tomorrow the world wakes up and sees The Beatles as a shitty band and Ford Pinto's as the car to get, you would see the values of Pinto's and Beatles records from the 70's adjust accordingly.
So, yeah if you want to talk about how much money a company is worth, you need to look at how much people are willing to pay for that company. i.e. market cap.
No. It is common to cite financial performance before taxes and other things.
Yes, it's common Executive Speak, which was the point.
Think of it like reporting your salary rather than the adjusted gross income (AGI) from your tax return.
I think that would be a great comparison if you were able to write off all your living expenses AND your consumer purchases from your tax returns the way businesses do. Everything from the food on your table to the TV in your den to the pontoon boat you use for fishing on the weekends would be tax deductible.
UK has a worse track record compared to Sweden when it comes to handing people to US and when he was in the country perfectly free of any allegations
No. They don't. Sweden might not even bother with an extradition hearing, and "temporarily" surrender custody over to U.S. agents. It's happened before.
In December 2001 Swedish police detained Ahmed Agiza and Muhammad al-Zery, two Egyptians who had been seeking asylum in Sweden. The police took them to Bromma airport in Stockholm, and then stood aside as masked alleged CIA operatives cut their clothes from their bodies, inserted drugged suppositories in their anuses, and dressed them in diapers and overalls, handcuffed and chained them and put them on an executive jet with American registration N379P. They were flown to Egypt, where they were imprisoned, beaten, and tortured according to an extensive investigate reports by Swedish programme "Kalla fakta".
You were saying?
He's an attention seeker, destroying Wikileaks' credibility.
Says one of the people heaping attention on him rather what he's revealed. You have as much self-awareness as Bill O'Reilly pimping his ratings with sexy video clips followed by him whining about how there's too much sex in the media.
Then it is perfect, he goes to the court, gets acquitted and walks out a free man.
If it were just about getting him to court for the second time (remember charges were dropped at first and he received permission to leave the country) then Sweden would go ahead and promise not to hand him over to the U.S.
Just a few details the 'screw Assange' crowd likes to keep ignoring, no matter how many times they're placed in front of your noses.
He asked for and got permission from Sweden to leave the country after the first complaint was made. He has offered to meet Swedish prosecutors in the UK to answer their questions. He has offered to return to Sweden if they promise not to extradite him to the U.S.
3) Person is speaking to someone grotesquely ignorant or stupid, or both, who needs to sap out of their intellectual coma.
You know, people like Teabaggers with the "get your government hands off my Medicare" signs, or Republicans who to this day blame Clinton for Ruby Ridge, which happened before Clinton was even elected to the Presidency.
Have you ever stopped to think why there is only ISP #1 or ISP # 2 in the first place? Could it be because it's not a natural monopoly but because they have the ability to use elements of their government granted monopoly that competitors do not have readily available access too?
Could this be the 10000000th time you've proved what a great UID you have? I'll check and see if you've won a prize.
Rolling out fiber/copper to homes and businesses is a serious investment. You simply are not going to have more than a few companies making said investment even in the most urban of areas - and once that investment is made, the best way for a company to increase profit is to buyout or merge with your competition. Until you are left with a monopoly, or if you're extremely lucky, an oligopoly. Quality of service will go down and prices will go up.
But, hey, maybe enough Libertarian Magic Dust will override 30 years of evidence on rampant market consolidation, whether it be banks, airlines, or telecoms.
'Tax incentives' are the definition of a corporate giveaway. Especially when the corporations in question take the handout without delivering what was agreed to.
And after the Civil Rights Act they all promptly became Republicans. Or did you think we'd forget that, jackass?
No, the verdict is in.

Because "doing something about it" meant making it worse with more tax cuts for the rich. Any more winger questions?

etc.
The indictment is sealed.
Assange has stated that he will voluntarily return to Sweden if they promise not to hand him over the U.S. Rather than making such an easy promise, TPTB have put Assange's attorney on a terror watch list instead.
So what you're saying, is, your nephew isn't black or latino.
"Freedom" = stress, intimidation and loss of time at minimum?
Ohreaaaaly? If today's voter suppression laws had been in effect in the 80's, St. Ronnie might not have been able to cast a vote in either of the elections that put him in office. Because he was born at home and had no birth certificate until 1991.
Never happened.
Another lie, and maybe you shouldn't throw stones in a glass house.
Of course it's propaganda. Guess which country in the Middle East has the highest Jewish population after Israel? That also has Jewish members of Parliament?
The parent, cdrguru, is a lying liar.

Those were extreme rightwingers, dumbass.
