    Palms are still a few years out. They have severe memory restrictions. Once we get to 128M palms, we will be there. The applications will follow.

    This is a great area to start boning up. They will be a hot item. I have seen some really good projects involving palms and analysing weather and insect data for growers. But the memory restrictions are holding them back.

    Looks like PHP is looking to become a "real" language. Good to see. Our library folks wrote a time-card entry system using swipe cards with PHP and didn't know squat about the language when the wrote it. It's a great language for beginners and experts alike

    I used to sell Osborne Durangos, Trash-80's and Ohio Scientific. We even sold the Xerox microcomputers with the icons (forerunner of Windows). The Ohio Scientific had a 10 meg hard drive that was the size of a boot box. We never got it to work. We all swore the IBM PC was a piece of crap that would never go anywhere. Z-80 was the way to go.

    This gives idiots a chance to use the Internet. Not necessarily a good thing but they generally just go to web-based chatrooms and play with the emoticons anyway. I doubt a person using Juno could figure out how to pirate software.

    The beauty of Linux is its freeness. Name some free OS's out there. It's free; it's easy to use; it's not some corporate giant waiting for you to bend over for a paper clip and drive you home. We went from Windows 3.1 to NT because MS told us that Windows 3.1 wasn't reliable. Hello!! Software with a built-in anal prod. No thanks. I like Linux because it's FREE and I'm a cheap bastard.

    I knew California was in trouble when I heard someone being interviewed on NPR say "We need a good SHORT-TERM solution".

    Please note that ALL untility stocks are down because of this. California plans to ask the rest of the utilities to "pitch in" and bail them out and the other utilities will have to eat the costs. Duke Power is down almost $30 a share.

    As we say in the South, California is "fixin' to shit and step back in it".

    A RWD car with snow tires will do as well as a FWD car. I had a 1971 Plymouth Valiant. Me and p*ssy were mutually-exclusive during that period, slant-6 or not. It was an ugly car that repelled women but you could drive it 25,000 miles without changing the oil and not hurt the engine. Try doing that to one of those sissified cars today and it will sue your ass.

    Since Linux is not tied to profit, Microsoft attacking comes off more like that rabbit that attacked President Jimmy Carter's boat in the 70's. Lots of activity but very little threat.

    Gates is in enough trouble. He's not going to waste his time swinging at a target that keeps moving around on him. He'll just continue to tell people "You are too dumb to use Linux. Bob is easy. Linux is hard".

Or move to Maine where they don't care what you do as long as you don't mind doing it in the snow. Stay out of Virginia. Bad place. Very bad.

    Good catch. I knew several people who got into games based on CW and Duke Nukem. It was a good draw for the "Mario with a Gun" crowd.

    I want a really geeky tie. We have a casual office so I started wearing ties again to be different. Gimmee a really wide-ass tie with penguins on it. I want, like, a bib.

    California hasn't built any new power plants for years. Their air is cleaner and greenhouse gases have been lessened. This is a win-win for California. So what if people have to do without some heat and light? Let 'em eat cake.

    I guess these geniuses never thought to possibly THINK AHEAD and build some solar plants to supplement their power at these companies. No, that would require too much foresight.

    I have the last beta which I had to use because Netscape kept blowing up on my machine.It will completely baffle 90% of the current Netscape users who can barely function with a toolbar.

    But I like it. It is "robust" and has a "rich diversity of functionality". Let's just pray it doesn't screw up my Javascript apps like it has in the past.

    We had Flex at AT&T when I worked for Keane. You could work 45 hours for two weeks and get a day off the next week. This gave you time to do all those chores that usually require a day off like going to see your parole officer. We were consultants so AT&T didn't like it that much but it was a great recruiting tool and kept people in the office more. Plus we were oncall so we were required to work the day if needed with no makeup day. Win-win for the company.

    Of course, they ditched it eventually and suffered a boatload of turnover for it. I found that some of our management only gargled at the fountain of knowledge.

    Cop-outs are an integral part of corporate culture. They are willing to sacrifice productivity and employee relations to save some wear and tear on the derriere.

    On the surface, corporate day care sounds good. But some pretty hair is going to ask "Why do we need to do this when day cares are everywhere?". The corner office doesn't concern themselves with clerks being out with a sick kid. It only matters when their secretary is out with a sick kid.

    We had a lactation room when the one of the corners was pregnant. It was opened with great fanfare about the importance of the nuturing role of the company but it went away when she weaned her kid.
