I work in the Nuclear Industry in Canada; I'm a 40-something engineer, and I'm one of the young'uns. In the NDE division that I haunt, there are around 20 engineers, and about 40 or so techs. Of these, there are two techs and one engineer under the age of 30 that have signed on in the past half-decade. The evaporation of skills and knowledge is beginning now, and in 10 years more than half of the staff will have taken their pensions.

  11. Heavy water toxicity on Bismuth No Longer the Heaviest Stable Element · · Score: 2, Informative

Heavy water poisoning of animals is caused by the D2O (heavy water) inhibiting cell division (mitosis). Bacteria growth rates are reduced, leading to problems in the GI tract, and bone marrow activity is reduced. So GI infections and enemia are symptoms. You would need to approach about from about a quarter to about a third of your body weight in D2O to achieve toxic levels. It would cost in the vicinity of $10,000 dollars and you would weight several pounds more when you died.
