  1. Re:Err... on A Six-Step Plan for Apple · · Score: 1

I "understand my own needs" and have built lots of PCs for myself and others over the years, and yet, despite your words to the contrary, I have bought 3 Macs in the past year. First an iBook and a dual G4, and then an upgrade to a Powerbook. I would have loved to opportunity to trade in one of my old PCs towards the (admittedly kinda steep) purchase price of one of those Macs. Doesn't matter too much, though, now. I hardly use my Windows machine anymore, and it's a pretty speedy machine. It's just that once I adjusted to OS X, especially 10.3, it's hard to go back to the suck-o-rama of Windows, unless I really, really need to.

A lot of people have said that it's a weakness that this has to be controlled from a computer. For some, that may be a problem, but quite frankly, for me, this thing is just about perfect. In my house, my "computer room/office" is downstairs, and while I spend most of my time down there, I also spend quite a bit of time upstairs, in the living room, with my PowerBook. Downstairs, I simply access my shared music files (which I keep on my laptop) from my desktop, which has big speakers. Upstairs, I would have to run a cable to the stereo, which I haven't done. This device would allow me to run my music through the stereo, and since I'm working on my laptop anyway, it doesn't matter that there's no interface. Also, I can hide a (cheap) printer in the entertainment center or somewhere else, and connect to that when I need to print, rather than sending the job to one of the printers downstairs and getting it next time I'm down there. I think this thing is cool, and reasonably priced, too.

I hear what you're saying, and I have done this using RCDefault, which I used to set the disk protocols and others back to their default settings before doing the test. I've read the rumors, and have set my protocols accordingly. As I had set the protocols back to the defaults, anecdotal evidence in this case would seem to indicate that the Security Update fixed the problem. Either way, the idea that Paranoid Android is the ONLY fix is bogus.

Yes, I'm sure. I waited, and I tried it a couple of times. For the record, I have RCDefault installed, and I did set everything back to the default settings before trying Unsanity's example.

Other issues... I ran the Security Update, and then tried Unsanity's example. it didn't work. So, it looks like that particular vulnerability is fixed by the Security Update. The problem can be fixed with RCDefault quite easily, as well. Also, note that this vulnerability does not work from within the Opera 7.5 browser.

Yup. I sold my copy of 10.2 for about $70 on eBay, which makes my upgrade cost, even paying the full $129 when 10.3 came out, about $69. I'll gladly pay that every year if the upgrades are as rockin' as the jump from 10.2 to 10.3 was.
