  1. As someone who moved to Fairfax Co. in '82, I've had numerous opportunities to see the local LE in action. I highly doubt there was some nefarious goal. And I say this as someone who's opposed to them keeping any kind of database to track our movements. Every cop I've interacted with, save one who was a little aggressive but backed down when I shut up (the group I was with was being kicked out of a bar and I was trying to explain what happened), has been polite and professional. From what I've read, they've used this system to find many stolen vehicles and convicts...I'm good with that.

For those who think it's the right pushing this, it was our former Democrat governor Terry McAuliffe that refused to sign a bill that would have limited LE's data retention to 60 days.

  2. I am all against facial recognition. But cars aren't people. And driving is a privilege, not a right.

Yes, we've all heard that old phrase, but the reality is that if you live in Fairfax county, as I do, you likely have to drive just to make a living. If you consider that a requirement to work, which is is for the vast majority, then you'll have to admit that it's not so much of a "privilege". It's being used to track peoples movements, and that's a blatant invasion of privacy. Yes, you can be photographed in public, but people have no right to follow your movements, and that includes the government.

Since you've driven those autobahns (as have I), you know that anyone moving into the left lane checks their mirrors for traffic, and makes a judgement on how quickly they may be approaching before ever turning that wheel. That's simply being a safe driver. Now, you're always going to have some assholes who fly up and tailgate for the reasons you've given, and they should be nailed, but it's also your responsibility not to pull right in front of them if you could have easily waited a moment for them to pass, and it's your responsibility to pull back to the right as soon as it's safe for you to do so.

I have driven there for six years in the 80s-early 90s, plus several week long trips in recent years. Rarely ever did I see Polizi on the autobahn. But honestly, there was little need for them because everyone typically followed the rules, except for the tailgating which I saw numerous times with people quite literally a couple feet apart at 100+ mph speeds. Of the ~50 countries I've driven in, Germany was by far the best organized, and most disciplined drivers.

  10. And you do? Why the hell do you suppose that CBP has been asking for a barrier for ages, and nearly any CBP officer you ask endorses the idea. But no, you're the fucking expert. It's just like layered security on your computer, a wall isn't the be all end all, it's a layer.

  11. Good luck with that you fucking moron. You never would have gotten to the moon w/o those contractors. You never would have launched a space shuttle w/o those contractors. You never would have won WWII w/o contractors. The press and government love to beat up on contractors, and sure there are some shitty ones, but in my 40+ years of working government contracts (I'm actually retiring today), I've rarely seen a contractor fight back because they're afraid to piss off the government and not win more contracts. Government contracts are full of ambiguous requirements, and contracting officers are often still wet behind the ears, fresh out of college, and just looking to punch their tickets on a quick job to move up the ladder, while leaving a shit storm behind them. Scope creep is common, and is the reason you ended up with ridiculous overruns on many large DoD systems. The vast majority of DoD contractors are veterans who love their country and would report corruption in a hot second.

  12. Right, that's why we have Navy bases in Nevada and Tennessee. The DoD doesn't get to pick where they put military installations based upon need, Congress does based on every fucking politician wanting those funds for their own. This is why it was so difficult to close unnecessary installations and ended up with the whole BRAC shutdown.

There was no logical reason for the shuttle parts to come from 49 states other than political.

  13. Setting bold goals and staying on schedule.

So I guess, they sacrifice safety.

Yes, and I'm sure if it was someone from the opposing party making this statement you wouldn't have made the leap to sacrificing safety. When JFK made his famous speech, you didn't hear that kind of whining, nor should you have.

  14. ""It was rhetoric about 'by all means possible' and 'we'll provide the resources necessary' and 'leadership is essential,'" John Logsdon, a space policy expert at George Washington University, tells The Verge. "I mean, they're all good words. But the devil's in the details." "

So, you like the message, but hate the messenger. Got it.

There are also plenty of privacy laws to consider since many of the people involved/interviewed were not under investigation.
