  1. what if Creature House had.... on Initial Review of Microsoft's Acrylic BETA · · Score: 1

released this beta...oh wait a sec, they did, nobody cared, and Microsoft bought them.

I loved Expression when it came out in what, 1996?, it was a cool little utility to use with PhotoShop and Illustrator. As everyone has pointed out.

Microsoft isn't trying to create another PhotoShop, they want to kill off Acrobat. They may say otherwise, but it's killing them. Think of Acrylic as chipping away at the house of Adobe.

  2. Re:etoys on Meet Microsoft's Linux Lab Head Bill Hilf · · Score: 1

It's been said above, but the real failure for eToys is that they over-invested in their infrastructure and that combined with increased competition for customers led to their demise.

Interesting to note that their imperious leader, Toby Lenk, has gone on to Gap, Inc. and is perpetrating the new lunacy of writing an e-commerce system from scratch. Of course, they have a very low customer acquisition cost, so we'll see how long it takes to make back the $60mil along with the assorted overhead of an IT org triple the size of the old one.

Ken Rockwell is trying to define a similarity between professional photojournalists on a deadline, and the average snap-shooter with too much money to spend on the latest gear.

I prefer to edit the RAW files rather than depend on the camera controls. I'm a control freak and like it that way. Hard drives are cheap.

Anyone worked with color management and PhotoShop with Linux? It's nice that PhotoShop 7 works, but what I really need is support for my printer and monitor color profiles.

You've found a web-based project management software that is easier to use than Project? Do tell, I've looked at everything, and the only products worth using cost wwaaaaaay more than Project. The rest of the free stuff is, well, free, and that's about all they have going for them.

  8. Why no x-browser support on FireFox and Longhorn: Meant For Each Other? · · Score: 1
...XAML poses to be significantly cool. How long do you think it will take before we start seeing sites that are XAML-only? I mean, today how many MAJOR websites can't even be bothered to do even basic cross-browser compatibility checking (or do outright requirement of IE), let alone spend the resources to implement sites using two very different technologies?

Having had to make the decision NOT to code for x-browser support at 3 of the largest apparel commerce sites, I can say that it was a cost decision not some freaky validation of microsoft technology, or disinterest in open source or mac software.

Basically, the additional design, coding and testing to support anything but IE was killing our creaky in-house processes and placed yet another obstacle in front of releasing any new features.

So, chalk up Microsoft's browser success to bureaucratic intertia.
