  2. Windows Vista Shares on Living Free With Linux, Round 2 · · Score: 1

I have noticed the problem with browsing windows vista shares from ubuntu myself and so far I have been unable to locate a fix for the problem or a workaround.
It has been a few months since I last looked into the problem so perhaps there is a fix out there that has been found since then.

  3. RIAA - The red herring? on RIAA Wants Songwriter Royalty Lowered · · Score: 5, Interesting

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the RIAA essentially a representative group formed with the intent of pushing forward goals and legal issues for the major record labels?
If so, then they are doing an admirable job of inspiring people to direct ire and hared towards the constructed organisation rather than to the parent companies.
It isn't often that I see people complaining about Sony or BMG (Comparatively speaking).
It always seems to come down to that nasty RIAA.

    Well done indeed.

  4. Re:More time at work on Do Any Companies Power Down at Night? · · Score: 1

I couldnt say why, but hibernate has been disabled by system policy where I work. At my previous company it was disabled because it was viewed as a security risk.

  5. More time at work on Do Any Companies Power Down at Night? · · Score: 1

To be honest, the reason why I don't turn my own PC off at night is because it takes so much time to bootup and then load all of my applications that to turn it off each night would require me to turn up to work earlier the next day just to get everything running.

  6. We are all tiny cogs on Corporate IT Hanging Up on Apple's iPhone · · Score: 2, Interesting

I work in the IT Department of a very large US based company.
I find the chances of them allowing access to our systems to be very slim.
And frankly the opinions of our employees don't really play much of a part in any kind of decision making process when it comes to IT or security.
Even when it has come down to specific blackberry models we would would without hestiation tell people that we had no intention of supporting their device, we never would, and no amount of pleading would change that.

Of course saying that, I think that many of the iphone features are fantastic and potentially very useful in a business enviroment.

But it does have the advantage of not being surrounded by Australians. Easily worth it.

  8. New Zealand - Watch out for the sheep on If Not America, Then Where? · · Score: 1

Come to New Zealand. We have a relatively free country with decent prosperity and friendly welcoming people. That and it is a pretty darn nice place to live. I happen to think that it is quite the advantage that there are very few animals that will bite/poison/maim you, so aside from other humans and your own stupidity it is also a pretty safe place to live. And to be even more specific, Wellington is the best city to live in.
