  1. Physical effects? on The 'Perfect Space Storm' Of 1859 · · Score: 1

I wonder what physical effects these are having on living creatures...Will cancer rates rise as a result of these? If there's a hole in our shield, then we're getting blasted by Gamma and X-Ray's...That's generally not good..
And how about the pilots flying commercial planes? They get a higher dosage than we ground dwellers would!

It says Pentium-based computer...but I think they're talking about newer Penitum-4 based computers. A 3GHz box with the right I/O cards and 800MHz FSB can crank out a lot of traffic. It's also much cheaper than an Itanium and many other more current chips.

It'd be a whole lot cooler if they were doin' it with C64's.

  7. Simple, do the math... on Most Movies On P2P From Insiders? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Go to the Movies : $9.50 each person
    Buy the DVD : $14.95 - $19.95
Download and burn DVD : ~$200 for burner and $1.5 per disk.

Figure for a family to go see a movie ~$38.50 + concessions...It's way cheaper to buy the DVD. However, when DVD's are > $20 each - it makes more sense to copy them...

The point is, lower the prices on this stuff (movies and music) and people will pay for it. A large portion of the piracy is due to price gouging, IMHO.

Oh, and put out more movies worth seeing! :)

  9. Bandwidth / Accoutability on Bad Behavior on the 'Net - Who Pays the Bandwidth Bill? · · Score: 1

There's a big difference in bandwidth issues for co-location and for shared hosting.
If you put a server in someone else's building you should be accountable for bandwidth - after all, it's your software and your hardware using their bandwidth.
If you are running a site on someone else's server, then viral harm should not really be your problem - in the case of slammer types anyway. You have no control over patches or proper administration and therefore should not be accountable for bandwidth unless it's because you actually do get a massive spike in hits (ie. via the /. hammer syndrome).

Admins need to be taking care of their stuff and people that have servers need to have Admins...A lot of servers I've had to fix during the last few viral epidemics had not been patched or even looked at in a long time. Perhaps they didn't have admins...

I think it's kinda like having a fire...If you don't tend to it, it could be cause damage to other people and/or their property. And thus you are accountable for your own actions.

What we really need here is an authentication system like M$ and/or Battlenet uses for DRM but for other media like audio and video. It worked well for the Circuit City Divex adventure. :) As always: if you can play it, you WILL be able to copy it. IMHO, if you put out a good product at a fair price, most people wont mind paying for it. If you try to protect it, the protection is or WILL be circumventable anyway - and it will NOT deter someone from copying it. It'll just piss off those of us who want to use it legitimately and give others something to do (crack). We'd all be happier about paying less and getting more - or at least not laying out the cash for crap products.
