That's a decision of the distro maker to be purely free open source non-proprietry software. It's not a fault of linux. Even debian you can play everything (except latest version WMV which you need to download a few files) "out of the box" so to speak (i.e. apt-get the appropriate packages).
no I'm talking about if one in two people use it, then their friends will start using it as well since it's free. Remember that we're not talking about Apache here.
what's different from using kde on windows instead of kde on linux? They're pretty much the same, except you get a huge amount of extra programs and features of linux.
Anyways I hope KDE and Gnome never get ported to Windows. It'd lose a lot of what little advantage linux has over Windows.
If Windows gets down to 50-60% then linux would just have so much momentum Windows usage would collapse probably down to 10-15% in less than a month. There'd be absolutely no incentive for people not to upgrade since it costs nothing. However let's just wait and see what happens - that may be a long time away or may never happen.
lol I'm sorry benevolant leader:P. I'm soon going to get sick of the letter k using KDE - it hasn't happened over the past year but I'm sure it will happen!
*sigh* Mandrake broke the usability consistency barrier a *long time ago* (meaning "about a year ago). Nowadays you install mandrake fully in perhaps half an hour (without any technical stuff - a newbie could do it! Perhaps not nanna though) and it just works. Plus it has about several thousand times the functionality of a new windows install - it comes with a dvd/cd player/burner/ripper, gimp, word processor, development packages, secure and up-to-date web browser, games (including kiddy games, which I unashamedly like, oh and btw look up battle of wesnoth - just brilliant), viewer for every god damned format you can think of (except a few microsoft proprietry ones), compression program, amp program . . . I've run out of breath. I sometimes have to use Windows XP to do different things (including development) and I just can't stand it anymore.
Though I personally use Debian, and I've got it exactly the way I like it. Pitting Windows XP up against Debian is fast becoming like pitching a porche up against a tank. The porche is flashier, but for some nagging reason the tank looks more secure and you can do so much more with it.
I'll get up off my metaphor now:) It's too late for me to type.
It just depends which statistics you depend on. A lot of people think that linux overtook apple sometime even in 2003 due to IDC's statistics taking. I believe that it may have slenderly overtook in the past few months, though I'm a linux user so I'm biased. Shipping numbers are quite similar, don't know who's leading at this exact moment, but it was Apple by a very slender margin half a month ago according to linuxinsider, though Gartner says many computers bought with linux included are used for pirated windows versions, however the opposite is true, that many computers without linux are shipped that have linux immediately put on them (like my computer). In particular all of the users of alternate distros like debian (eg me), Ubuntu, Arch, Yellow Dog, etc usually can't buy computers from stores with those preinstalled, and Yellow Dog even adds to apple's shipping numbers!
Labours official policy is the adoption of open source products wherever possible (though that is I'm sure open to interpretation, it is still better than Liberal's policy)
I doubt that that'll happen - they're moving from mostly Novell to all Novell. That they're totally moving operating systems isn't exactly the point here because Novell definitely isn't going to complain.
Actually Rupert Murdoch's News Limited is Australian for another month or so - shareholders just voted for reforming on the American stock exchange in New York from Adelaide (?) a few days ago. This hasn't taken effect yet though.
Though that's even worse than being American - Australia was 41st on the list.
heh, Usually having 10 gigabits per second nullifies all possible reasons to have bit torrent in the first place - I mean it only takes 8 seconds to transfer a full DVD.
mmm, C++ is way too bloated - the binary code that it produces is horrible. In fact, when you think about it, not even C gives the best possible optimised code - you're wasting a whole 0.001% optimization! They should go backwards, not forwards! They should go for the best possible optimization - Assembly all the way! Just think about the extra microseconds saved - it's a linux hacker's wet dream!
I'm interested to know what would happen to PG Australia once the free trade agreement comes along. Since we're going to most probably adopt US Copyright laws will PG Australia have to delete twenty years of material off their servers? Also will all the people who downloaded the material have to delete the copies?
*shrug* I haven't had any sound card, network card, motherboard, IDE card, hard drive, usb device, anything that's not directly supported by the 2.6 kernel except 1 (a logitek webcam). That's just plug in and use it. I've even actually had some things that I looked up on the internet to see if they worked (like my canon sp200SPX printer) and only found things saying that it's impossible to use on linux, but they were wrong.
Also, have you tried looking up OCR linux on google? Though I'm not going to presume that they'll suit your purposes there are plenty of programs that work on linux...

a. linux has this. b. windows does not.

However this may well be a ficticious scenario.

does putting a 'k' at the front of the name make it clearer for europeans?

Does it run under WINE?
They just had to make it kamera didn't they?

Please rtfa. They don't use Windows anyway.

I don't live in the US but considering Telstra's record I won't be putting any 10 gigabit toys on my christmas years for the next century or so.

Just wondering, have you ever seen someone deliberately and seriously overload the ^ symbol to play the star spangled banner on the system speaker?

wtf? Why on earth would anyone want to use IE on linux?
