OK. when the story was first posted server51.freshmeat.net didnt work and a 'ls freshmeat.net' on the freshmeat DNS did not show an entry for server51. looks like they have just added it now:-)
I think the real question here is not whether it is right to kill someone in order to stop their suffering (god knows there have been enough debates on that subject) but whether or not this is actually euthanasia.
Not being disabled myself, I cannot say if "severely disabled infants" are doomed to a life of suffering. I must admit to feeling that everyone should be given the chance to make what they can of their life - with the help of their community of course.
People with severe disabilities *do* need more help to travel through their lives but who can say that if they are given this help their life will be one of suffering. Many people have created something wonderful despite severe disabilities. We need to put more effort into giving help to those people that need it so the question of whether disabilities leed to lifelong suffering no longer needs to be asked.
(DOH, I was going to agree with Singer's ideas, but as soon as I started writing this I changed my mind and started to ramble!)
has anyone else noticed that anytime a historical figure who contributed any *any* way to the intelectual understanding of the world is mentioned on/. (s)he is labeled as a geek.
there seems to be a huge backlash at the moment where people who felt isolated from society are creating their own society (with the label 'geek') and are trying to grab past achievments and poeple as their own, just in order to prove their society has existed for an appreciable amount of time.
people who are trying to enter this society are constantly attempting to prove tghemselves by grabbing more and more achievments and labelling them under that magical term 'geek'. this seems equivelent to one of the rites of passage in some primitive societies where the young man has to hunt his first wild animal before he is accepted into the tribe.
i dont know, it just seems kind of bizarre the way that parts of geek society seem to be unevolving into a quest for power and acceptance in the same ways as the societies it has superceeded.
they say it connects wirelessly to a home network or uses ISDN etc to connect to the internet. what would be really great is if they built a mobile phone into it so I can suf the web and post on slashdot from anywhere. 'ang on - if i want to post then it will need a keyboard really and will just turn into another Psion 5 clone.
Apparently Kubrick decided (before he died - obviously) that he couldn't direct this film because it needed a 'human element' to it that he couldn't give to it. so he chose Spielberg to direct it under his supervision as producer.
we will have to wait and see what it turns out like without that input.
Quote: "For example, if a user downloaded an illegal copy of a song before the phase-two technology was available, it would still play on the upgraded device. But if the user downloaded an illegal copy of music the band released after the technology was available, the upgraded device would recognize it as pirated and would not play it."
Anyone know how this could work? how can a device tell the diffenence between an mp3 i encode one day, and one I encode the day after?
TV and other media can help raise awareness of these important issues, but we do run the risk of this turning into a personal Gerry Springer show. Do you really want to be paraded in front of the world - just because someone is telling your story doesn't mean they are doing it for your good - dont be pawns in the next ratings war.
There ARE producers/programmes out there that will take on some of these storys because of thier value and truth but I dont think there are many.

Worst name - 'Star Trek:Excellent' - nah
I think 'The Phantom Menace' has to be the worst one so far
