Anyone around long enough will remember how stupid the CNG trend was
Umm. LNG is taking off in a big way. Cummins, Caterpillar and all the other diesel manufacturers are pushing dual fuel engines. New emissions regulations are moving marine engines to running LNG in port:
ZFS is what saved my ass. No SMART warnings. No other indication of a failure other than my scrub going "Eh, your drives are shit, we took them out of the pool".
I wish I saw Backblaze's previous report. I have a whole lot of Seagate paperweights. I couldn't do anything but laugh when one of their SNs ended in FML
In comparison all of the WD Red's that I bought to replace those (and their warrantied replacements) are still going strong. I did everything 'right'. Spread out my purchases, bought from Newegg and Amazon, kept them cool, etc. I think out of the 12 or so 2 & 3TB Seagate drives my current FreeNAS machine still has all of 1 or 2 still running. And one of those just started throwing SMART errors (even though the zpool scrub go through fine).
It already exists. You have the misconception of thinking that "CS" is still a college required career. It's a skilled trade. Ford did (and still does) have a hand in helping to craft automotive repair tech courses.
The problem is you're using an OS that is NOT officially support by AMD anyway.
So what you're saying is I should continue to pay money to the company that develops drivers for my OS? How is it that Nvidia can support as many OSes as they do for nearly the same cost as AMD?
It's a thing that is currently being worked on, and that should disappear once the stack has finished migrating to AMDGPU.
How long does it take to fix a bug this big?
Whereas with Nvidia? It's just "go fuck yourself" (unless you're referring to Tegra).
But I don't care Nvidia provides hardware that works with the software. Most people don't care. We don't have time to sit around and wait for someone to fix it eventually. I'm glad my job doesn't depend on that AMD "bug" being fixed. It's going on 3 years now(?). I'm not paid to write drivers. I'm not paid to debug drivers. I'm not paid to dick around with drivers.
I'm paid to use the tools to achieve another task. Right now Nvidia has the best tools. Even if they don't show me how the hammers are made.
Shall we speak about the support of Intel+Nvidia hybrid laptops ?
I disabled the GPU switching, Nvidia graphics works great on my M6800. I'm typing on it right now.
Meanwhile my old Nvidia cards are still cranking away with working drivers (with acceleration!)
It's like I paid Nvidia money and they delivered a product I could use.
Unless you're volunteering to read through AMD's spec sheets and writing me a driver for free.
Additionally under Linux AMD has a 'bug' (Feature?) where you can't even use them under OpenCL without a device attached. There is a way to fake it with a resistor but if you're going to bank on headless GPU computing you'd think you'd make a driver that could work with no head.
Sounds a lot like Patreon where people will pay you for "self-employment, artistic endeavors, or idleness."
But has just ended up turning into a grandstanding for a certain minority of people.
My prediction is the money will flow to the loudest and most offensive grandstanders and people that could have been helped by this will most likely be ignored.
Then again I don't earn $4.7k/month not doing anything for FreeBSD under a name very containing FreeBSD.
For me FOSS is a tool, it's not something to get emotional or tied up about. I pay Nvidia money Nvidia pays people to develop drivers that work. I paid AMD/ATI money and they said "Ha, here's a shit ton of specs, write them yourself". Sorry. My job isn't to write display drivers, my job is to use the display drivers.
I suppose I could try growing my own food too, but I (gladly) pay someone else to do it for me. Even if it is a bit 'closed source'.
However from actually reading the article I'm only seeing low level support personnel. The kind of job that is usually made obsolete by a combination of technology and an efficient workplace.
You mean the same types of low level support positions that are replaced by H1Bs before they're completely automated?
How is it that slashdotters can identify and call out the "low level support personnel" when looking at a photo from decades ago but don't realize they're in the exact same position now?
If you're doing things the same way you've been doing them for the last N years, then you're about to be completely automated so that the rest of us can start working in the 2050 'efficient workplace'.
How do they not remember Jack Thompson? Anita Sarkeesian is just a boring rehash of the same crap Jack said with more of a sexual spin less of a violence spin.
So before I try and take your opinion seriously here, please tell me you weren't the guy that wrote You filthy slut, how dare you cum without my permission. Maybe I should gag that pretty mouth on my dick until tears are rolling down your face, or tie you up, blind fold you, and use your little ass all night (and deny that wet pussy completely, I don't think you've earned it). I'll have to decide when I get my hands on you, but don't think being far away makes you exempt from punishment either. You can expect your orders shortly.
What is the difference between this, FreeRTOS, ChibiOS or any of the other open source RTOSes already on the market?
The biggest news here is that Wind River is opensourcing their RTOS.
Run NilRTOS
One is liquefied, one is compressed.

I haven't had any issues. I've randomly pulled a boot drive and ZFS doesn't complain. I use FreeBSD with ZFS on root.
ZFS is what saved my ass. No SMART warnings. No other indication of a failure other than my scrub going "Eh, your drives are shit, we took them out of the pool".

Why not take this opportunity to improve?
A Windows API compatible OS on top of a ZFS root? Sign me up.
All of my Samsung SSDs have lasted longer than my Seagate paperweights.
They didn't say what sort of help they needed to provide.
I say set them up with a password for loop. Lack of computing power is the FBI's problem.
Find me the last time 9000 BTC was worth $1.50.

You could easily do the same thing with Jupyter Notebooks and they're free.
It's trivial to spin up a JupyterHub instance on an old machine. It exports to PDF, HTML, LaTeX and Markdown.
If you don't want to do it Microsoft's way don't take their money and do it your own.

I guess her Patreon didn't get the message: https://www.patreon.com/freebs...
The more you post, the less I'm convinced you aren't the neckbeard on Reddit with the purely coincidental exact same username.

Well, there's a solution for that and it rhymes with SmitCoin (which slashdot seems to hate).

When we see the same thing posted over and over for a decade, yes.
I'm still buying Nvidia cards because they work. I do have some AMD paperweights if anyone wants them.

Tangent....
This isn't the first article where I've seen you stick up, heavily, for the "SJWers" or their "agenda". So a quick google lead to.
The first 2 hits are slashdot and reddit.
