I'm sorry, but this sounds dead on to me (and my BMI is over 30). If I'm too lazy, or too sick, to keep my BMI down, or if I have preexisting medical conditions that make me much more likely to cost the insurance provider more, I have no problem with being charged more. This is a great incentive to take preventative action, when possible (BMI, smoking, a better diet, etc), and it is a reasonable provision when not possible.
This will lower the insurance for the fit and healthy who never see a doctor (but want the insurance "just in case", and raise the cost for insurance for those who are ill or lazy and go often (I'm speaking in the long run, of course).
I have no problem with paying. I think what iTunes is charging is fair. I'm not trying to make some statement that intellectual property laws are immoral by downloading it from another source.
My point was that I do use bittorrent to download it, because iTunes doesn't provide as good of a service as the pirates do. If they want to convert "the masses" from bittorrent to legal methods, they need to provide a better service.
I pay the $45, so I don't consider my bittorrenting episodes stealing.
I own an iTunes season pass for the current season of 24, but generally bittorrent each episode. Why? Because the "pirates" can rip from the broadcast, remove commercials, encode into xvid, and post on thepiratebay.org 12-14 hours before iTunes can get it online.
That's a problem. I own the season pass because I love 24 and want to support the show. But it's just silly that people who go against the system can make it available before the people who do, when it's essentially the EXACT SAME THING.
This is different from a telesync of a movie being posted before the dvd release. Since iTunes has the blessing of FOX and all the rest, they should have their downloads available at, say, 1 AM eastern the day after each show is aired. There is no excuse.
Consider my foot firmly planted in my mouth.
Not sure where I picked up "modular emulator," but I know I read it somewhere years ago. Obviously, I'm wrong, though, and I can't find any really relevant references online.
My larger point about the masses using a term regardless of relevancy is still, well, relevant, though.
A DSL or Cable "modem," is certainly not a modular emulator, where the term "modem," comes from. However, the masses viewed a true modem (ala 56k) as the device that gets you online, not as a way or transmitting digital data to analog data over a telephone connection (as the term truly means).
People now think the term "cell phone," refers simply to a portable communication device, not recognizing the true meaning of the term. The "cell phone," will not be going away any time soon.
Why? Because RF isn't standardized. It isn't built into any computers like Bluetooth is. I have a Powerbook, and all I want is a Bluetooth v500, because I don't want something sticking out of the end of my 'book.
If Bluetooth is overkill, fine. Make me some kind of standard that will be internal in laptops, and will support wireless mice and the like.
Also, by your complexity argument, all mice should use a serial port, since USB is really overkill. But I'm just nitpicking there.;-)
Laws like this are silly. Is there discrimination against GLBT persons? Sure. But the majority is based on business necessity. I guarantee you, if a GLBT person would help the company more than a straight person, they would be hired. Thats why we see so many gay males at salons and high fashion clothing stores. But to require that a man who likes to dress up like a woman be viewed no differently from a normal man or woman is asking too much. I, for one, don't want to talk to a man in a dress who works at a restaurant.
not allowing the installation of software without root password? How about protecting certain mission-critical parts of the system? Might those be good reasons not to use root as a main account?

Sounds fine to me.

So people who aren't paid always produce unbiased stories?
Who says that unbribed news stories aren't biased to start with? Perhaps bribing results in more fair stories being published.

Extrasolar means not in this solar system. Yes, Mars would be more earthlike. Heck, Pluto might be more earthlike. But they're in this solar system.
The post referred to GLBT... Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual. I would assume that transsexuals tend to crossdress.
