  1. Re:Bonus content on Steve Jobs and the State of Legal Music Downloads · · Score: 1

Well lets see.. I have all Bowie's LPs on vinyl, mostly bought when I was about 15 and they were on cheap release here in the UK. Those I liked or could find I bought second hand in their original packaging, since that included nice things like gatefold sleeves, picture inner sleeves and lyric sheets. A few I picked up on music cassette too, for my university days. A couple of years ago I bought the whole lot again on CD remasters, some nice new pics and lyrics included. But hey, much nicer to have on CD. Then the last couple of years we got 'anniversary' editions of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, and Ziggy live. Lovely book or box formats, tons of info, extra discs and stuff. Gorgeous. Now I have 5 copies of Aladdin Sane, 4 of Ziggy, etc.. I might be the ultimate sucker (though I /do/ have to think about it before I buy the latest version), but yeah, it works for me ;-)

A crank handle? I once thought that would make a cool accessory for the side of my Plus. Something to wind while I watched the wristwatch spin (like everytime I clicked a link in Hypercard..)

Hard drive? You were lucky. On my Mac Plus I had to write blocks to separate 800k floppies and stack them in the right order for disk toasting.

  4. new iBook, bye bye crystal white? on New iBooks and Apple Store · · Score: 2, Interesting

I played around with the options on the new iBooks, and the extra batteries are all showing up as opaque white.. previously this was only on the base model. Seems the lovely crystal white model is no longer available. Worse still, does this mean they all have the nasty, nasty, grey plastic hinge and chassis edge finish? Though the opaque white is fine, the plastic hinge looks much cheaper - acceptable in the very cheap low end, but not in the others.

If true, this will make most of the purchasers at our site go for the 12" PowerCook ;-)

  5. Re:Too big on Nokia 3650 Released in US Market · · Score: 1

Yeah it is too big and plasticky. Whatever it has built-in, you still need to carry it around and use it as a phone. I think the OS X 10.2.5 update will add BT support for this (same as 7650 I believe), but iSync has yet to be updated for it.

I've had a T68i since September, and it's horrible. The hardware's nice, but the os is useless - everything takes an age to happen, it crashes lots, and usability is an alien concept. I have got it working reasonably well with my Palm vis BT and GPRS, and Mac support is a given of course. But the Nokia OS is soo much better. If only they made a small phone with BT/GPRS and mac compatibility. Soon, I hope.

Check out the 7650 actually. It's still big, but a much nicer build, as long as you can use the organiser features.

  6. Re:Integrating Finder with Terminal on A Better Finder? · · Score: 1

Looking at this from a slightly different perspective, I think we should be able to create finder windows and log them in as different users. If I need to be log in as a different user to access part of the filesystem, I'm not sure if there's a good reason for not being able to do it directly in a window. Close that window and it's logged out.

There had better be a pink version. Anyone out there good with fur rendering?

  8. Re:Confllict with Apple Records? on Apple to Launch Music Service? · · Score: 1

AFAIK, this was worked out some time ago. The original agreement with Apple Records prevented Apple Computer from making so much as a MIDI interface, let alone iTunes and an iPod.

  9. Re:FWIW... on Mac OS X Update 10.2.4 Resets · · Score: 1

When I moved my machines to Jaguar I had the opportunity to do a clean install on my Lombard (one pre-pismo w/SCSI port), and it really appreciated it. Runs faster most of the time on that than on my white iBook 500 which has more RAM. The clean install reall helps. Updated to 10.2.4 no problems, though my iBook gets occasional unexplained sleep and blue screen moments (they last about 3 seconds, then all is well again - similar to when hot plugging in a projector).

  10. Re:Emergence on Swarm Intelligence · · Score: 1

I understand some of the criticisms of Steven Johnson's Emergence, but overall it's proving a useful introduction for some of my students to the concepts of organized complexity. I recommend it with some caveats: I'm not entirely convinced by his arguments about the problems of the web. The notion that it constitutes a formless chaotic mass and that only the search engines allow us to make any sense of it seems to be missing the point: His description of the undifferentiated stages of embryonic development would seem to indicate that what looks like cancerous runaway growth can become something entirely different. As he says, more is different. Additionally, the way in which credible (usually) information is now frequently replicated across the web strikes me as analogous to the way the brain stores data in a redundant fashion. I find it much easier to locate the material I'm looking for these days than i did back in '96, and that's not all down to the search algorithms. Nevertheless, a good, engaging read. My second year students aren't mostly ready for G.E.B. yet ;-)
