    So what ?

Explain me why the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, or British Airways, or even the Australian Railcorp connects their computers to the global network we call the internet ? Explain me why they use an untested system (Windows) to operate potentially life-threatening services ?

This is downright stupid. This is not your mom and pop shop we're talking about. These are agencies, corporations, that should have security of their people or the people they serve as their first rule. You do not put in operation a system that you haven't tested for failure. There are well-known procedures to implement safety testing. I really think that the persons responsible for these systems should be at least fired, if not put on trial. This guy didn't put bricks on the track, didn't try to put a bomb in a plane, things that are clearly difficult to avoid by applying well-known methods. However, safety-testing of a computer system is possible and relatively easy, if you're not trying to be the cheapest. When I board a train I expect the wheels are checked regularly, the structure won't collapse from vibrations. We should also expect the computer system not to collapse without serious reasons.

Baaaaahhh ! Come on ! I'm *also* French, but I actually live abroad since many years (and have been in different European countries), so maybe I have a better clue. The only people who believe their country is the most chauvinistic are really those who have not been abroad for a long time and cannot speak the language of the country they're in. Otherwise they'd quite get that people are not that much different in their way of thinking, at least accross Europe (indeed I believe all over the world). They'd read the local press, hear the local people, and see for themselves that the only real difference is that the French are just more *vocal*, so they chauvinism tends to show more.

On the contrary, I have a tendency to think that the French are the most self-flogging people on the planet (although some other countries are quite good at it too) ! It doesn't preclude being chauvinistic, however, I still haven't found a country with such a high level of pessimism about itself.

Of course, if you're talking about old or unsuccessful movies, then that is the case everywhere (and I'd venture in saying it's probably the case in the US as well). Currently I live in Denmark, and I recently bought "Citizen Kane" and "Dune" for less than 5 euros each. But really, I wouldn't generalize in saying that all DVDs sold in Denmark are cheaply made, have no bonus and no CSS, as it is definitely not the case.

However, I felt the need to answer this post particularly (usually, I don't care that much about french bashing here, it's just too common - and yes I got it that you weren't bashing anybody), because it went a bit too far into the realm of conspiracy. You forgot about the Occam Razor, no need to find a complicated explanation: these discussions about copyright and "stealing" are all over in the western world, and all "customers" are getting (either consciously or subconsciously) pissed at the attitude of the content producers. The battle is fierce, rulings are sometimes against the consumer, sometimes for him (a few cases recently). But the main battle is in the media: content producers (music, movies, books) are very effective in their use of the media, and instill the ideas that you are not allowed to share, although it is one of the most natural things to do. And already I can see people having these unnatural ideas well inside their heads. A judge, putting some sanity into this, and applying the law, and only the law, is a very good thing, and is enough of an explanation to me.

Now onto this specific case, seen from France: the french movie industry was in a bad shape in the 80s, and was probably going to totally collapse like many of its neighbors', without the help it got (and not only state help, far from it, there's been a lot of private investments). It is true that there has been a lot of discussions about "countering" the American culture, about 15 years ago, and some kind of stupid fear than French culture would be completely assimilated (the French especially like to self-depreciate and are quite pessimistic, it's a very common French trait). However, I can assure you that nobody in France is currently afraid about having too many American movies on the market. The French movie industry is indeed healthy now, and has its fair share of bad movies (really, do not think that we don't have utterly stupid and bad movies, we have a lot of them, a huge majority indeed: it's not like the French have a special gift from God so that they produce only good movies). Therefore, given that there is currently no fear about American movies in France, I do not see a judge being so much into "getting those Yankees". Quod erat demonstrandum ;-)

Every morning, 60 million Frenchmen wake up and think about how they can annoy the Americans. Every single day of their lives. Yes, I know it sounds stupid, but you guys here on /. make it sound like we have nothing else to do of our time than to think about the mighty US of America, how to annoy it, how to counter it. Believe it or not, it happens sometimes that we have ideas, rules, laws of our own, that are not just there to be "against" the US.

And by the way, even though you almost never see them in the US, there is actually a lot of movies produced in France. This ruling is going mostly to piss off the french movie producers. And there is absolutely no need for a "hidden agenda" to explain it.

There's a very simple explanation: you don't want people to eject the floppy while the system reads or writes to it. Especially, if, like on the first Macs, you actually load the system from a floppy. Letting the system manage the ejection of floppies (instead of the hurried user) was a simple way to avoid problems, loss of data, system crash, you name it.

Besides, one of the first times I encountered a floppy was sometime in the eighties on a friend's Commodore or Amiga. Believe me, he didn't like when I pushed the little button to eject the floppy while the system was writing to it. But for me, I had no clue the system was still using the floppy. All in all, the ejection of floppies on a Mac is surely unnatural, but is not something totally stupid as PC zealots would want you to believe.

These court papers are quite interesting. Apparently, one thing that Apple is worried about is the competition getting their hand on Tiger pre-releases, as they state:

"Maintaining pre-release software as a trade-secret is essential to Apple's ability to compete in the markets for personal computer hardware and software. If Apple's competitors had access to Apple's Pre-Release software, those competitors could benefit economically from the knowledge gained from that access by directing their development or marketing efforts to frustrate Apple's plans." (this is on page 5, point 18)

Now, I would understand this if they were actually not providing pre-release software to anybody. But really, what stops any Microsoft employee from getting into the ADC and distributing it to the Longhorn development team ? Does Apple have a list of all Microsoft employees so that they can prevent them from entering the ADC ? I'm puzzled...
