Call it software with a soul, if you like. Only the truly passionate need apply.
I've always felt that the same applies to any career path. If you don't love what you're doing, then find something you do love doing and can make a buck in the process. Life is entirely too short to spend it being miserable.
For the love of God, can't we just answer someone with our experiences and build up this "Google" you speak of with some actual content?
One of the beautiful things about the open source community is that it is a meritocracy - your worth and status as a member of the community are directly porportional to the amount and quality of the work you've done. If a poster is seeking to join the community and has questions to ask of those who have successfully integrated Linux into Windows environments, essentially asking them/us to give of our time and share our experiences, then the least he can do is show that he's invested some of his own time and energy by asking an educated question.
A more suitable question might be, "I'm considering integrating a Linux server into a windows environment, and it looks like Samba is the way to go. I've read some of the tutorials and whitepapers and it looks like it can be done; have any slashdot readers done such a project? Is Samba the right solution, and what pitfalls should I expect?"
Oddly, the authors conclude that the best systems are Linux, and Win XP SP2. WTF?
The authors are only taking into account existing attacks that are initiated externally. If you factor in all the malware that exploits IE vulnerabilities and waltzes right through the xp firewall, not to mention malware that exploits a service permitted at the firewall, XP shows itself to be much less secure.
not really. SP2 does some locking down on ie and gives the firewall inbound and outbound filtering as well as only allowing certain executables to send data on outbound ports.
but every question that's been modded up so far is something they've already answered
My guess is, all the PA readers with mod points were busy asking questions, and thus unable to mod the unanswered questions up.
Also, why would Iceman be melted by Storm's lightning? Maybe a little bit of melting would have happened at the entry and exit points, but that should have been it. But more importantly, how would Storm's lightning strike Iceman when Wolverine and his lightning rod endoskeleton are standing right next to him?
To force myself to learn Python, I'm thinking of setting up a Python daemon that will listen for an "administrator" machine that pushes commands that a company's SysAd wants.
You may wanna check out FanOut and FanTerm. Both programs are used to run commands on multiple boxes via SSH. FanOut does non-interactive commands, and FanTerm pulls up one window for each SSH session. You type commands into the master window then see the results from each machine in the slave windows.
Combine that with certificate authentication for your SSH logons and you're good to go.
How do you feel about becoming a big name, one of the things you dispise most? How do you feel about becoming something you have stated hatred to? This is not meant as a flamebait and I await an answer.
How's it feel to be such a fucktard shitcocking assclown?. This is not meant as flamebait and I await an answer.
Some of the PA characters such as BatJew, Safety Monkey, and your significant others have been based on real people. Others such as Charles are completely fictitious. I have to ask though, is either Div or the FF2000 based on anyone you know in real life? And if so... are they available for appearances?
For many gamers, PA fills the role of the gamer buddy who's always got both the latest game and a well-aligned opinion on it. Have gaming studios approached you for your opinion on their works in progress, and if they did would you offer it?
...since there seems to be a diversity of opinion regarding the relative quality of WordPerfect and MS Word.
As I see it this is irrelevant. The most complicated feature used by the vast majority of Word users is mail merge. Word may have had more bells-and-whisteles than WP, but that's not likely to have an impact on 90% of the potential WP users.
Get over it -- people with completely different backgrounds than what you try to pigeonhole republicans as are still able to conclude that the GOP has their interests in mind.
Holy shit, a Privileged White Male voting Republican? Say it ain't so!
Here's a question - did you ever consider which candidate had the country's best interests at heart?
"It nuked my win2000 install on one and refuses to see any partitions on the other and will only accept the whole device."
That is un-fucking-believably lame.
How exactly is that lame? In a corporate environment that has a heavy windows install base, dual-booting is a reality. Between web apps that only run on IE and home-grown apps that only run on windows, I'll never be able to do my job on a linux only machine. For someone like me my choices are pretty much limited to dual boot and VM.
I'm not averse to tinkering with VMWare, I just haven 't gotten around to it. But I don't think I should have to just because for some reason the newest releases of every other Linux distro bork up your windows install. Think for a moment of the amount of flack that would dished out if the next Microsoft OS couldn't be run in a dual boot environment, then hold your favorite distro to the same standard.
Wouldn't you have to listen to others to get information to critically come up with a decision?
Absolutely. You would hav to listen to others, get information, then critically com up with a decision. Contrast that to listening to others, learning that "The French want Kerry to win", and deciding that if the French want Kerry to win then you must want Bush to win. Note the missing "critically come up with a decision part". I encourage listening to others, but I discourage basing your opinion solely on the opinon of others.
One thing I don't think many Europeans realize is that the first reaction many Americans will have in response to exposure to a European (or any foreign country's) opinion on something they view as an American choice will be to do the opposite.
What I love about people who react like this is that they're still sheep. They're still basing their opinions on the thoughts and words of others, rather than thinking critically and coming up with their own decision.
If that's the case, then most companies are fucked. You just can't explain to some people, "Don't open the email that claims to have nude photos of Anna Kornikova, no matter how much you want to see nude photos of Anna Kornikova." They simply won't listen. And I'm not trying to be funny. This was an actual problem at a place I worked a few years ago.
I disagree. You can explain that to your coworkers. In fact, you (as a IT/security professional) are obliged to tell that to your coworkers, in the form of a written infosec policy that every employee signs. And when someone opens that email with Anna K's picture in it, your management has a respnsibility to visit disciplinary action upon the offender, thus ensuring that your infosec policy has teeth.
take a look at my uid number, then take a look at yours
Fair enough. But if you've been around so long, how can you not recognize a post containing copied-and-pasted text plus a link as being void of any conversational value? As for my memories of slashdot, when I went from lurking to posting there were trolls, but not many. Since then they've set up their own websites, and they've gotten better at disguising troll posts as ordinary posts. Maybe there's some kind of connection between spammers, virii, and trolls?
At any rate the grandparent post may or may not have been a troll. The only person who knows that is the poster. But imo, it's as much a mistake to attack moderators without evaluating the post's merit as it is to mod the post down without doing the same. I disagree with posting / modding solely according to groupthink, but I'm equally opposed to posting/modding according to antigroupthink (if that's a word!)
And in other news, 82% of adult web searchers are goddamn morons.
I know the, flamebait mods' get thrown; around when slash:dot users' give the editors' crap but c'mon guys'! Do your freakin jobs'!(_

If you liked SUS then check out Ximian/Novell's Red Carpet. Think SUS for Windows and Linux machines.
Combine that with certificate authentication for your SSH logons and you're good to go.
Wow, that was worth the karma...
I hear He also throws up the horns.

Let's just hope the feds don't find the old troll posts referring to homosexual african americans...

If I'm the troll then why are you the one posting as an AC? You may wanna get back to the bridge you've left unguarded.
