I think you have them wrong. ASCAP is a performance rights organization, not a label. IIRC, BMI (another performance rights organization) came about due to disagreements with ASCAP, but I could be wrong. BTW, performance rights organizations are the ones that make sure that royalties are paid out. Basically, they're the good guys.
Not scary in the least. Believe it or not, the major labels have very little effect on the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of music that is created. You have to figure that for every band that makes it onto a major, there are about 1,000 that didn't. You also have to understand that the 46% figure is most likely based on Soundscan numbers, and most indie labels don't use Soundscan, for whatever reason. No Soundscan, no reported sales.
How about you put forth some effort and actually LOOK for bands instead of sitting on your ass expecting them to be shoved in your face? You obviously have an internet connection, I suggest you use it.
Having broadband isn't a right. When you use any network, you are bound by their terms of service wheter you like them or not. Don't like them? Then don't use that ISP. Don't have another broadband provider? Tough shit. Either quit your bitching or stay on dialup. Be sure to tell the ISP why you didn't choose them though. They love to hear about lost business due to their own stupidity.
Why put the onus on the consumers, when it is the ISPs who seem to be failing us?

Gnome and KDE have both felt like a "not either one" amalgamation of lame Windows and Mac ripoffs to me. I don't see why they have to copy either interface style. It makes more sense, at least to me, to give Linux a look and feel of its own. I don't WANT my Linux and Windows boxes to behave the exact same. There are things about one that just don't work with the other's interface.
The problem is that most major desktops try to imitate both Windows and OSX and end up with a severely fucked version of neither. Then again, what do I know? I use Fluxbox.
Actually, I'm thinking of places in the midwest. Central location plus lower property expenses. I wouldn't call warehousing cheap anyplace, but it's cheapER when you're not in a metro area.
The point is... WHO GIVES A FUCK? They could just as easily require you to telnet into their server and download text files of the site, but goddammit Flash just LOOKS good when done RIGHT. The web is a visual medium. Either accept this or STFU.
