It would seem to me that our attitudes (in the first world) to climate change will have far more impact than any direct measures that we might take to decrease our carbon emissions.
Science is not about how the universe REALLY works, it is about coming up with new models when the old are found not to match new empirical data. New models have replaced old, NOT because the old were wrong and the new correct, but because the new models simply had greater predictive power or predicted a wider variety of phenomena. There are no theorems in the natural sciences - only theories.
Splitting hairs maybe, but dogmatism about science grates on me just as much as in the religious context.
The fundamentalist believes that we believe in nothing. In his world-view, he has his absolute certainties, while we are sunk in sybaritic indulgences. To prove him wrong, we must first know that he is wrong. We must agree on what matters: kissing in public places, bacon sandwiches, disagreement, cutting-edge fashion, literature, generosity, water, a more equitable distribution of the world's resources, movies, music, freedom of thought, beauty, love. These will be our weapons. Not by making war but by the unafraid way we choose to live shall we defeat them.
How to defeat terrorism? Don't be terrorized. Don't let fear rule your life. Even if you are scared.
Got to find out whether my friends are safe...Got to find out whether my friends are safe
Because it hurts not knowing...A form of selfishness, maybe. But a healthy one.
First thing I did was try to phone my brother to find out if he was OK. Couldn't get hold of him by mobile, so I tried email. He replied within seconds. I love the internet.
That is the whole point/meaning of science - the acceptance of fallibility, and the the willingness to drop old theories in the light of new evidence.
It doesn't rely on proof through intimidation.

Sure, I might use the train rather than driving to work but next to China building 1 new coal powerstation PER WEEK anything that I actually do seems rather irrelevant.
What, harder than actually landing on the moon????
Seems unlikely that they will see the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.
The Big Band Burger Bar, maybe...

I cannot express in words the pride I felt seeing my home country South Africa feature so "industrially" on this pollution map.
