True mirroring as in really RAID 1?
You won't get any kind of speed out of that unless you implement a SAN. And that's big $$$ (as an example Apple is on the LOWEST end there with a sub $10K solution).
I'm not so sure about that. I've heard the OTHER side of the coin -- namely that professional photographers PREFER multiple, smaller cards. That way if "something bad happens" they lose the photos on that particular (say, 256 MB) card, but not *all* of them. The photographer at my sister's wedding this past weekend was using a Fuji FinePix S2 Pro, and he had a belt full of CF cards -- probably 10 or 12 of them at least. They were all smaller CF cards (at least the couple I could read were 256).
Well... Larry is somewhat of a gasbag and he absolutely hates Microsoft... so he's gonna take any angle he can to pronounce the doom of Windows, even if it's as much his "want to have happen" as it is "he sees it happening."
Same with McNealy. You wouldn't cite his prognistications as impartial either.
On the contrary, I thought it was an extremely well thought out and constructed document. It discussed:
* what they were going to do
* why they were going to do it
* common questions/misconceptions (hence "strawman" mentioning other arguments)
etc.
I was quite impressed that it was formal and laid out... really having a well thought out battle plan is a great start. It doesn't help to rally the troops and march if you don't know which direction you're headed.
The majority of votes is a complete non-issue: We have this thing called the Electoral College in the US and that's what matters, not the popular vote. You can't change the rules because you've lost the election.
On the barred voters thing -- don't forget the tens of thousands of overseas (servicemen) votes which were delayed and then cast aside in FL also. These were of course extremely biased towards the Republican side.

LCD Overtaking CRT

You can frequently get a Dell 20" LCD (same as 21" CRT) which runs native 1600x1200 resolution for about $900 on special.
I can use a 20" LCD at 1600x1200 (running DVI). I cannot comfortably use a 21" CRT at that resolution -- the comparatively fuzzier text gives me a headache after a couple eyes. Text on LCDs is markedly sharper.
Price of a P4 3 GHz? What, you mean the chip ONLY?
You can get an 18" LCD from Dell these days for around $500 (sometimes as low as $350-$400 on special). 1280x1024 resolution.
We (IONA) certified our app server on Sun, and we failed something like 50 tests which we investigated and found the tests were acutally bad. The thing is, others had passed these same tests -- what we found is that the J2EE reference implementation had bugs which "passed" these bad tests, so obviously everyone else who was certified was using large parts of the reference implementation in their test suite.
Heh.
Help me a bit here -- I believe GPS satellites are geosynchronous which would mean there are many "parked" over the US -- would it be possible to "fuzz up" the ones the Iraqis would use, but leave them at a higher level of accuracy in the US?
I mean my friends who geocache will have a whole extra level of work if they decrease the accuracy to 100 meters... and I might take a wrong turn on the way to a restaurant. Better start protesting the war;-)
I'm not clear from this whether only commercial skipping will be forbidden, or whether it'll also be forbidden to "fast forward" through commercials.
The article makes it seem like the latter is the only thing forbidden (commercial skip or a "30 second forward" button) -- we all know the obvious issues with that, and it's not even enabled in TiVo by default (but of course we all know the code;-)
If you can still use standard VCR-style fast forward than the device probably isn't totally crippled (it's just a more manual process) and it would likely be somewhat suitable. If you're FORCED to sit and watch all commercials then it's less functional than a VCR even... I predict mass suckage if that's the case.
Really... I can't recall falling victim to "DLL Hell" in years... since the install of Windows 2000 I can't recall actually being affected by this problem.
So it *is* a problem on 95/98/ME/NT but it's not on 2000 or XP, so why does it need to be "fixed mo' bettah'" for a future version?
Or at least available as an accessory.
I have that resolution on my 23" Cinema Display and it's perfect... I'm just not cut out for it on a 15" display. I don't have Steve Austin eyes:-/

And use *this* story as an example of "ironic."
