  1. Re:Abort mission, they have the port! on Computer Jargon Too Difficult for Office Workers · · Score: 1

I'm still drastically disappointed at how upset my boyfriend became when he saw a sig on a message board that told him his ip address. He complained over and over again about how it's just not right that it knows what it is. I tried to explain it but he seemed to not believe me when I told him it was nothing to get worried over.

    It's incredibly frustrating!

  2. Re:Floating iPod on Real Wood iPod · · Score: 2, Interesting

    You're recalling incorrectly.
Witches float because they weigh the same as a duck (and also because they're made of wood)

Drifting from Monty Python territory the float test was one used during witch trials. They assumed if people sunk they were pure but if they floated the devil was aiding them. So they either sunk and drowned or floated and were executed.

  3. They didn't start off as acronyms on Hackers, Spelling, and Grammar? · · Score: 3, Informative
Secondarily, Short hand speech, and the various amorphisms that have entered popular culture are not to be discounted as simply "mangling" the language. Prominent words such as FUCK and GOLF were once simple slang words (acronyms both) along with a host of other words which we take for granted today.

Are you honestly claiming both of those words were actually acronyms? If so you've fallen for some very common, but incorrect, stories. While the origins of both words are a bit muddy they're certainly not what you're most likely claiming.

This is what the wise people at snopes.com have to say about golf and fuck

I attempted to make my own divx's and had some serious problems getting one file with synched sound. I could only get portions of movies, the sound was off, and the one piece of advice was on how to make divx using one specific Windows only program...

  5. I can't handle this anymore on Diamonds - Are They Really Worth the Cost? · · Score: 1
This was the last of the "diamonds are an investment in her" comments I could handle before I was compelled to put my two-cents in.

First I'll start by saying I've been married for about 2 and a half years now. My engagement ring was silver with a an amethyst in it (purchased about 6 monthes after I proposed). My and my husband's wedding bands are silver band with a celtic knot pattern. All three rings cost together under $400. At the time I purchased them I was mostly just happy not to have the extra expense but now I'm also happy just for the nice simplicity.

As a chick with a brain I see shiny overexpensive rings as a worthless showoff. Most of them end up looking basically tacky. There are very few diamond with gold rings that I see and don't wonder what the person was thinking. In my opinion, anyone who demands one as a proof of love isn't worth the effort. It certainly isn't a good sign of the way you're viewed (walking wallet) or of the way you'll be viewed in the future (walking wallet/sperm donor/inept husband).

Of course, I end up avoiding friendships with most other females because they usually end up sounding shallow and frivalous so maybe my advice for dealing with "normal" women isn't great.

  6. I'm not that stupid on Happy Independence Day, Jose · · Score: 1

The current state of elections in this country is simply sad, I have very little reason to vote. I have a choice between a party who wants to take away all of my social, religious, and reproductive rights while overspending on military so that we can appear mighty (Republicans) and one who wants to spend all sorts of money on anyone who remotely needs help (Democrats).
I could vote for a third party (and since I'm not that bitterly cynical, I will) but such a large portion of the population either doesn't know they exsist or refuse to admit to themselves that the current state of governnment isn't working that it's pretty useless.

Btw, Republicans have never actually shrunk the size of the government, they've just slowed the growth a little bit.

In the world of computing, cheaper is not always better.
I'm frightened of the below $800 very new computer trend. I'd be afraid those things would keep dying on me. Not that cost matters. I bought a $1600 computer that kept crashing on me.

But as was already said, you can get one of the original Rev A or Rev B iMac for $800-900 now.
    And it's far cuter.
