  1. VirtualPC ? on Xbox 360 Backward Compatibility Finalized · · Score: 1

All of the sudden Microsoft's purchase of VirtualPC from Connectix makes a lot more sense. The core enabling features for getting Windows to work on a Mac are the same as getting legacy XBox games to work on a 360. Most notably you need a x86 emulator for PowerPC. VirtualPC is already the fastest most reliable x86 emulator for PowerPC which would make it the ideal starting place for XBox backwards compatibility. Having a know start platform and end platform could only make things easier for the developers.

  2. Catapults on What Interests High-School Students? · · Score: 2, Interesting
Over the last 6 years or so Iowa State's Tau Beta Pi chapter has had quite a bit of success with a yearly Catapult competition.

Check out the project page or read an article (pdf) about the first one.

Every high school in the state is invited to the competition. Percentage-wise we get a terrible response but do usually get a half dozen to a dozen teams. It basically boils down to there being a volunteer at the school willing to help the kids out.

The kids always seem to have a great time flinging eggs at our giant frying pan. And we hope they gain some interest in engineering through the process of building their catapult and documenting the work.

  5. Paten Battle led to royalty-free computer on Was Zuse's Z3 the First Programmable Computer? · · Score: 2
Actually you don't quite have that right. What happened was that Mauchly and Eckert patented ENIAC. Iowa State failed to paten ABC (they never got around to it). When the ENIAC creators started collecting royalties Honeywell refused to pay and instead challenged the patent. They used ABC as prior art. Not only that but during the course of the trial it came to be known that Mauchly and Eckert (or at least one of them) actually met with Atanasoff a number of time to talk about ABC before ENIAC was developed. The judge ruled that the patent was invalid.

This is actually a very important event in the development of computers. The technology was now out in the open. Anyone who so desired could develop a computer without paying any fees. Had that patent not been thrown out the computer landscape might be very different today.

Some information about Atanasoff and ABC is available here.

  6. Re:As an American... on Auto-Censoring DVD Player · · Score: 1

This is not Walmart making a moral statement about the content (after all they sell the DVDs). But rather Walmart wanting to make money. Walmart believes there is a market for the self censoring DVD player so they stock them. Walmart also believes there is a market for Vice City so they stock that. This make perfect sense.

What are the FAI rules for an aeromodel?

To qualify as an aeromodel under the rules for F3A, the plane must not exceed 5 kg (11 pounds), including fuel. The engine displacement may not exceed 10 cubic centimeters (0.61 cubic inches). There are also limits on the wing area and wing loading.
