Um, in fact there is, just as there is a plan for what to do in case of alien contact. I believe our plan for alien contact is to keep quiet, play stupid and lay low: that way, we appear to post no thread to the aliens. JMS alluded to our first contact plans in one Babylon 5 episode.
I see it now, the Government clamps down on slashdot and prevents the creation of any new comment threads. Existing threads become immensense cascades and are linked under multiple different storys. Invading aliens become confused and decide that humans are too complicated to invade, fearing the wrath of the elusive grits trolls with the power to turn Natalie Portman to stone.
Ahaha, this first poster is probably the slowest on the draw i've ever seen. A first first claim thats number #57?? comeon, you can do better than that.
Why not just give the option of disabling it in the BIOS?:-)
Because that is accessible from software and therefore someone will eventually work out a way to turn it on thru some neat coding trick. Possibly without the users knowledge of that going on.
Yeah I agree totally. What slashdot really needs is a feature that if an article gets moderated down as low as -3 or so, the IP is automaticly posted with it. Slashdot will police itself after that.
It will be a featured piece in my upcoming book 'The Trolls Of Slashdot' available exclusively from everywhere but amazon.com.

11.Can you imagine... a beowulf cluster of these? (oh uh, that Bateman guy's script is at it again!)
We already have beowulf clusters of these things, they are called libararies. Lets just hope the Us Government doesn't decide that they are too powerful for public use and ban them..
You wouldn't really need maps for that, processing power maybe. Consider a satelliet using radar to scan the area beneath it, if it detects something that is at 20,000ft while everything immediately around it is at 1,500ft you can safely assume that that is either a plane or a (_very_ tall thin tower).
Ok this is interesting but somewhat vague for some of us. Is there a more in depth report written by someone who isn't a hardcore gamer and just skims the topics mentioned?
b.) a way to view ONLY -1 posts, not -1 and above.
Hmm you know I might actually like that feature, ie a maximum score of posts to display. Moderators might like to skims articles and ignore everything thats already high scored and look for new posts to moderate on. It may be useful in fact in keeps all the trolls away fom the regular posts, ie trolls reading at a max score of 0, while normal people read at a minimum of 1 or so (that really should be the non-login default minimum btw).
Hi if anyone is looking for the aurorae in Australia try taking a look to the _South_. There was meant to be some great auroral activity this morning but that was in daylight, there a chance there will be a repeat tonight so go outside and take a look.
The affect the occurs when particles move faster than light in water or the like is Cerenkov radiation. Its a blue glow caused by the particles striking atoms in the water and exciting them so they release photons, usually visible as a blue glow.
A nice example (and a link to a better explanation) of this effect can be seen here.
Uh I dont think its possible to have a web page that old. The HTML standard wasn't even invented until the 1990's. If that was a gopher link I might agree with you on that it might just be the oldest news discovered but its quite a bit more recent than that..
Hmm was just thinking about that heres a nasty possibility. Someone could use one of the current weak authentication methods for domain transfers to hijack a domain, say www.microsoft.com then setup a nice fake webpage with all the microsoft truths on it on some random hacked host masquerading as that website. They could then wait a little while for the transfer to propagate and then hit either internic to prevent them from fixing it to quickly when Billy calls them up to do something. Or hit the root nameservers from the fix to be propagated (though i guess that will just stop it from being resolved at all though)..
Well I have to agree there is no revolution going on here, however there is a significant historical precedent being enacted here. This is the censorship of major powers; ie corperate or government bodies by a or a few individuals. This is a counterpoint to the other major power of the net that is of individuals to reach a large audience with small effort and expense. This power could be significant if the timing of such an attack is right as in these two examples:.
A major online share trading site is taken down just as a very large and popular IPO is going on.
The online voting booths for the first presidential election with online voting are taken out for the entire day.
The first example will just result in some company not getting quite the initial value hike expected from the IPO. The second case _could_ be quite significant however. It may just influence who is to become the President, a power that no small group of people without several [mb]illion to spare has had previously.
Sure you aren't thinking of St Elmos fire? This is the electrical discharge effect you get on the masts of ships during storms, named for the patron saint of sailors.
Oh, where you come from is it standard practice to have the plane doors open while the aircraft is in a holding pattern awaiting landing instructions. The suggested ability of passengers to _board_ a flight at such a point hints at passengers with greater than usual abilitys. Could it be that you are in fact posting from Krypton?
What equation would that be though?

Ok we really need a -2 (spam) or the like to get read of these ASAP!
I suspect the majority of the pieces of paper being presented to the judge(s) are small and green with numbers in the corners.

Just my $0.02..
Actally I think he is right, infinite recursion is worse than infinite recursion.

I may not appreciate your views on grits and Natalie Portman but I will defend to the death your right to say them anonymously.

Looks like more material for www.bsdchicks.com which really needs some more material .. and maybe a little more html than it currently has. ;]

Umm lets get this straight, this is a wheeled and armed robot with various science sensors and you doubt it would have any fancy devices or drivers?
