Oh and while you are at it really is about time GNU was changed to GNL (GNL is Not Linux). Both entity's are capable of standing alone without eachother, tho they would both be lacking in a great many things we take for granted. It was just a happy coincidence that both evolved at the same time missing some important entity, namely eachother. If GNU actually had developed the Linux kernel not only the utilities and application I would be happy to attach the GNU label on it.
Uh I think you just proved yourself wrong, in that making ungs harder to acquire does not solve such problems. The UK has among the strictest firearm laws in the world now and if that happens, I dont think prohibition of such weapons helps.
Ignoring the misuse of word the word Hacker for now, all the stories they have listed here are about people who have not done anything at all particularily smart anyway. Writing the Melissa virus? Well that guy did not even use his own code, he mostly used someone's existing macro virus lib. As for the guy who setup a scam on Angelfire well I'm not even going to start with the basic stupidity of that. None of the people in the article could claim to be described by the term 'Hacker' either the real meaning or the more popular current use of it. And remember all the real crackers who know what they are doing never detected anyway.
Well this guy lived in the UK where they make the F1's I'm not sure if they are street legal, but he was driving it madly all over his area and scaring the $%@#% out of the locals. He also was noticed piloting his personal helicopter dangerously low and fast in the area too.
Heh you're lucky that you aren't also a coaster as well now. Although I'm guilty of working on computers with the power on quite a bit. Disconnecting hard drives usually doesn't affect the computer at all, unless its trying to access them at the time... Yanking out an active NIC is another matter altogether though...
Another little trick I like to do is to use chattr to make all the system log files append only (+a) on the filesystem level (at least with linux's ext2 partitions). A script kiddie can rm or edit them all he wants but they will not alter, just get appended to. Of course this will mess up log rotation a bit, so you will have to modifiy the rotation scripts so they modify the attributes before rotation and reset them afterwards. An addendum to this is to remove or rename lsattr and chattr to something else, this wont stop them ftping in a new copy if they do know what they are for but it will slow down the script kiddies which is the whole point.
What we really need is a comparisions of two systems with identical hardware tuned and configured by memebrs of their respective camp. ie a Windows NT 4.0 server running IIS setup by microsoft employees against a Linux 2.2.2 server running Apache setup by Redhat? people. But we all know that MS would never allow such an unbias test to occur under their rule of FUD.
That site has some cool movies on it. Pity we slashdotted it out of existance for today.;-/ Anyway you can get a couple of the movies from here (just the troops one which is the best) or here which has a couple of them.
Rugged machines, therefore, keep their interiors sealed but avoid spontaneous combustion by using the surrounding magnesium case as a heat sink.
Sounds like a good idea, but what if you overclock these things, just how quickly is that magnesium case going to catch fire?

Oh damn there goes my plan to get unitednations.com and .org etc ;]

How about a: Don't do drugs and post comments warning? I'm sure it would bring the number of incomphrenesible postings down. ;]

You all seem to be missing the main point of this. What operating system is this machine running on?
Oh no, I think the slashdot effect strikes again, is anyone out there getting a page of any of these adventures in less than a minute or so?
