My point is that it's stupid to add another whole OS, especially an embedded OS to avoid waiting for the system to boot. Doesn't windows have a decent sleep mode? Isn't putting the machine to sleep a better solution than adding another whole OS?

What does it take? A single board, perhaps even a single chip, to run a DVD player/MP3 player? Most of the portables are large because of the screen/drive size. I think the embedded part would be a non-issue.

You still have to wait for the machine to boot to do anything else, so a quickboot DVD player and mp3 player seems pretty useless (and about 50% of what I do with my notebook is run the DVD player, so my opinion is hardly biased by having no use for the feature).

What the fuck are you talking about? I think that the rest of us are talking about using the laptop to play DVDs/MP3s without booting the OS. I wasn't aware that we were talking about booting the machine to do anything else. Just because YOU don't use the machine to play DVDs all that much doesn't mean that other people don't see the cost benefits that you mention above (laptop price compared to portable DVD price).

I think the only reason you're arguing with me is because I made the heretical implication that linux is not the ultimate solution to every possible problem.

You don't know me very well then. I am basically against Linux in everything except the server market. This has little or nothing to do w/Linux anyway. I don't care what the hell the computer uses to load a DVD w/an OS as long as it does and it does well.

Personally I take enough shit around with me when I fly (GPS, Camera, books, music, phone/PDA, and media) do I really want to carry around a DVD player too? What happens if I already carried a laptop? Wouldn't I want that to be able to do MP3s and DVDs without having to waste the time booting after leveling out at 10,000 feet for the 35 minutes before descent?

Mind you, I was a swimmer (not at the international level though), and I always wanted to see more coverage of swimming. Problem with this year is the over-hype of that immature little prick that makes entirely too much money.

The media helps his bad attitude by telling everyone he could break Spitz's record. He claims he only wanted one gold but I saw his cocky little smile showing that he wanted MONEY.

If the IOC wants to make some fucking rules why not make rules banning professionals from competing? Then we can end this coverage of how bad the NBA stars suck at playing a TEAM SPORT and how Michael Phelps didn't make Spitz's record (BTW Spitz did them all in WR time).

That way they have an easier time trapping you in there to tell you that they do not work on commissions but that they are happy to help you look for everything they offer.

The second to last time I went to Best Buy I was looking for a wlan CF card for my iPaq. I went to Circuit City first and they had one for $40. I wasn't a huge fan of the maker (never heard of them) so I went to the Best Buy (less than 2 mi as the crow flies). I went into the area with the CF cards and looked at their gigantic selection of two CF cards. Both were over $75. Immediately the vultures descended on me. For once I had a question, "where are the rest of your CF wifi cards?" "That's it." "Wow, these are expensive." I was then dismissed with a wave of the hand and an insult about my lack of wifi CF card knowledge. I told them to start shopping at Circuit City, their discount couldn't even help to match their prices.

So last night I go in there to pick up a SD card reader. Their selection was, again, fantastically lacking. Five card readers. Two took SD the rest were for Sony format. $35.00 was the cheap one. Huh? Newegg.com here I come. So as I am leaving I am asked why I am leaving without buying anything, "Not here for Madden 2k5?" "No, I was here for an inexpensive SD card reader, it's obvious you don't carry those."

Now I was lying a bit when I said it was $35. It *was* $35 but I was not-so-politely informed that I could buy it at $35 and wait X weeks for my refund to come in the mail. Sorry about that Best Buy but I could get I online for $14 including shipping and no need to wait for my money to come back. Perhaps Ohio should force Best Buy to pay interest on the money while you wait for a rebate... Don't they make you pay back all the interest accrued if you don't have it all paid off when their 0% APR offer is done? It would be nice for them to taste their own medicine for once. Perhaps they would care about their customers more if they did.

For Best Buy being on nearly every block here in Minnesota (there are 5+ within a 5 mile radius of me) they suck. How the hell did they get so popular? People are really willing to put up w/lack of choice and expensive prices?

    I'm sorry, I forgot I was in Microsoft-taught hell.
