yeah, blazing fast downloads... *MOST* people are interested in that. DSL you get about 80k/s (768/128k here) but cable (even when you are in the new moon;) you still get decent speeds, 150+)
DSL you have to deal w/pain in the ass providors (Verizon). Sure I get 80k/s, but when I cannot telnet anywhere b/c the ping response is soooo bad (1000+) I might as well be on 56k I would at least be able to get my work done.
I don't believe that telcos are doing anything to try and stop their customers from going to Cable. I personally believe that they don't want DSL. It is apparantly a hassle for them to appease the customer. They don't care if your connection is shitty, as long as they get their $32.50/mo. Your payment doesn't cover what they need to pay for their costs...
They oversell bandwith like crazy (even daisychain two shelves per T1 rather than one).
I am waiting for my contract w/Verizon to run out, and hopefully by then TW RR will be in the area here (supposedly sometime this summer) and I will be happier w/that.
dumbass. It isn't my NIC (roommate is running a different computer w/a different OS on the same LAN, no problems) tech has been out (from Verizon) to tell them that there is a definite problem with THIER system.
They are connecting TWO shelves per T1 instead of ONE. They know they are doing this, but they don't care.
I don't have a MSCE nor will I ever get one. I am a History Major not interested in any sort of computer related job. This is VERIZON PEOPLE telling me that this is the problem.
Get a clue before you think you know what you are talking about.
if there are 2 hour waits (at odd hours) then the company needs to do something to fix that.
I am not calling to have you fix WinAMP, I am calling to have you fix an ongoing problem with ping responses to the gateway (an easy fix, add more bandwith, something that Verizon is quite capable of doing)
I do NOT want to speak to just a manager, I want to speak to someone who will fix the fucking problem. If you say "I cannot help you with that" then there is someone else that can. Find that person. I don't care if it is going to increase the call length, I have already been on hold long enough that it doesn't matter at that point.
Customer Service doesn't help with the problem either. They are not fixing my poor ping responses.
ahhh yes. Most people do realize that you are human, but we don't understand how you can just sit there and tell us "I'm sorry sir there is nothing I can do to help you, good bye."
When *you* can't do anything, I want you to do your job and HELP. Find someone else that CAN and WILL help. If your supervisor can't, tell him to find someone that can.
When I sit on hold for 2 hours (<a href="http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=01/04/29/1826218&cid=19">Verizon needs help</a>) I expect some results. I don't expect to hear bullshit excuses, run-around, etc.
There is absolutely NO reason that someone cannot find an experienced tech rep that can help w/ANY problem.
it isn't free in the first place. What is being traded on Napster and Gnutella (I have no experience w/Freenet) for the most part is copyrighted material, not just "computer data".
I am not siding w/the fact that they are stopping this kind of service from running, I am saying that it isn't free and we aren't squashing any free trading of computer data. I have a good feeling that email, ftp, and www will be around for a while to do just that.
I personally don't give a flying rats ass what the problem is within the company. What I want is better fucking service. I am not paying $33/mo for DSL and getting shit service.
When I call, email, etc I *expect* results. There is absolutely NO reason that I should have to put up w/the problems that we do. This poor ping response shit has been going on since the end of January (as have my calls). They don't do shit.
If Verizon wants to continue to compete in the market, they better do some work to improve, NOW.
too bad that the weak providors (such as Verizon) are doing the best. They are probably doing better b/c they don't have to pay people to give good support and they oversell their bandwith to the point of being crazy.
I am very disappointed with Verizon as a DSL providor. Their normal telephone services are fine and their tech support is also fine.. When you get to the DSL operations they lack in many areas:
1. knowledge
2. telling the truth
3. customer first
4. calling back
5. caring that their service blows
I have used DSL under epix.net in PA and have never had a problem. They are very helpful (even w/Linux and in fact have some Linux gurus on staff that are willing to help).
When you call in for customer service I don't expect to wait on hold for 2 hours (until the portable phone dies), I don't expect to hear "yes, we know, there is nothing planned to fix that in the near future", I don't want to hear lies "oh, no technician would have told you that", and I don't want to hear excuses. I want the service that I am paying for.
It is a sad state of affairs that in a capitalist economy the best isn't winning...
that is why I don't see a problem w/cloning. Just because you are genetically identical does NOT mean that you are in anyway more likely to become some sort of superhuman mutant capable of killing everyone... Who's to say that this clone won't be completely against that sort of shit?
what I am confused about is how are they going to distinguish between a clone and a regular person? Is there some kind of stamp that is put on your forehead that says, "My other cells were someone elses too!"?
Steven M. Gillon wrote about "Unintended Consequences" in legislation... This one's unintended consequence was that it is fucking stupid and too general...
b/c the chips are just not fast enough. Low power devices are all well and good, but most of us want to compete w/the other geeks and have a system that just fucking screams!
I love the work that they did, but I have no use for it. I don't want a 700mhz processor that isn't running at 700 all the time. I want 2ghz that runs on low power and low heat and all the time.
I am confused as to how this is different from previous free music sharing? Why can't a live concert (not ripped from a commercial CD) be spread on the net (if the band is allowing it)?
I like that they are making it "official" but the Grateful Dead (and others, SCI, WSP, Ekoostik Hookah, etc) have been doing it for years and there are no problems!
I agree that all the distributions have their pro/cons and everyone has a preference.. I just believe that when using multiple machines it is easier to install the same distribution (I know that your iBook wouldn't work w/RH but..)
I have several Intel machines and random other archs.. I like having the majority of machines running my choice of distribution.. makes my life easier when I want to upgrade or whatever..
wrong. E is addictive. Everyone goes through the drug cycle w/that drug. I have seen EVERYONE go through the same stages as I have. Tough shit if you think I am wrong, I am not. In a group of 150 people, 145 fit the drug cycle I explained.
lucas county jail records, Toledo City Journal from the years leading up to, during, and after prohibition.
I did it for a research paper on a specific reform movement (prohibition) and I had to look at the gender aspect.
Turns out that women weren't arrested really for much (in Toledo) other than prostitution (doing it or running a house w/it) and possession of alcohol (usually in conjunction w/the prostitution arrest).
ecstacy is a drug that I find particularly horrible. The one and only ("soft") drug that I will NOT ever do again...
I believe Ecstacy to be one of the most dangerous substances on the planet..
It may not be physically addicitive, but it is most definitly mentally addictive. The drug cycle w/this drug is horrible [do it, do another pill, possibly another; comedown; probably say "I will never do this again"; two days later--find $20 for another pill, maybe more; roll again the next chance you have; buy clothes that look/feel good when you're rolling; never do it again; buy more...]
The substitutes that they put in the pill (why I have no idea, the god damn pills are cheap as fuck to make) are harmful if not deadly (DXM, etc).
It is an expensive, dangerous, addictive habbit which I would not want to see anyone go through...
I don't agree that the "war on drugs" created gangs, but it is a DEFINITE fact that prohibition of alcohol did.
in fact I just did a research project on the affects of prohibition and crime (much time went into researching Lucas County, OH). I assumed that crime would have gone down with prohibition (assault, etc). This was not the case.
In fact, after the first year of prohibition (in which crime did see a minimal decrease) crime rates rose steadily. Most of the crime was alcohol related (possession, transportation, etc) but it was a known fact that the men were spending more time at home w/their families and violent crimes against them were rising fast..
If we were to drop the anti-drug legislation I am sure the same effect would happen...
yep, take a look at marijuana, lsd, and ecstacy. Three VERY inexpensive drugs to manufacture (ecstacy being like.04 a pill to produce, $10 -> $30 to purchase)

I think that Christopher Robin and his hackers (Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, etc) would all be willing to get into this l33t deal!
umm, I wasn't doing it every other day. I was doing it every weekend. The cycle remains the same...
EVERYONE can become addicted to ANYTHING (sex, pot, etc).
do people goto the store to buy alcohol and tobacco even though they are easily made at home?
