I have a BSIT degree with a 3.5 GPA, but without real world experience in an IT department, it's impossible for me to find anything in IT that pays above tech support!
Seriously, with all the guards I have in place, I haven't really noticed anything. I got three spams for all of last week ( and this address is on mailing lists. You can google it for christ's sake ).
So yeah, haven't noticed it. Sorry.
( and yes, smartasses, if it makes you happy, sign me up for whatever spam you want to; it still won't bother me.:D )
That, my friend, is idiotic. Sure, in the extreme one might reverse the bins to get an idea of what's going on. But in practice, it's much easier to listen on the wire and see who's saying what. Then reverse the protocols that way.
In short, GNU's #1 freedom may be violated by this in principle ( were it to even apply to this, which it doesn't ), but in practice it's just a silly jump to make.
Ultimately, I forsee a community based commercial skipping system where people flag programs then upload that flagging information to a database that everyone else pulls down. They could flag only the first 10 minutes, or all of a show, and their work would benefit the whole.
Further, there is incentive for this type of system; I want to watch House *now*, damn it, if I can. I wouldn't mind tagging commercials while I'm doing it.
Work could be compared and background noise could be filtered based on previous viewer history. And of course, the control is always in the hands of the end viewer, so even if some incorrect data got loaded on to their device, they could override it and mark their own commercials.
Five months in jail is, to my mind, fitting to the crime.
Then you aren't thinking.
What is prison for? What's the purpose to putting someone in prison? To answer this, let's look at what prison does; It removes a person from the general population. Why would this make sense for a bt operator? Are they a threat to themselves or others? No, it's silly to imply otherwise.
A fitting punishment to this crime can and should be settled in civil court; They are forced to make restitutions.
So you tell me, which makes more sense; Taking someone off the streets and stop them from being a productive member of society. OR, let them continue working and paying off a fine. Which makes more sense given the crime involved? Which makes more sense for soceity ( remember, over crowded prisons )? Which makes more sense for those wronged ( what benefit does the RIAA get out of him being in prison aside from evil pleasure )? And finally, what makes more sense for the convicted?
Because, in general, most of us have worked in the IT field long enough to know the realities of it; Software houses do just enough to get away with it. The more exotic the field, the less they do.
Vista will be a fine OS in a couple years time. We all know this. After it's gone through it's rough first couple years ( because MS released it just to get it out the door, not necessarily because it was done ).
While tagging in general is an interesting idea, you have to understand that the combination of semi-anonymous tagging + your average internet idiot will completely ruin any hopes for a tagging system that does what you specify.
Instead, the editors who post the story should be tagging it appropriately. As well as that, there should be a common set of tags that can be voted on for each story ( dupe, inaccurate, comfirmed, ect.. ), with the voting be weighed by user.
And even that is subject to errors, but it'd be more accurate.
Actually, there is still quite a bit story left in the universe; Joss said it himself. Even were there not, I'd still pay to watch two hours of TV show again, assuming they were new.
I don't buy it; Non-interactive entertainment is bad, I've always believed that. But time on the computer? I've spent a significant portion of my life on the computer, and aside from a burning hatred of humanity, I'm just fine and very successful ( primarly because I spend so much time learning about thigns on the computer, frankly ).
A) Release an OS without really beefing up security and watch everything bad about XP and prior releases repeat itself on a larger scale.
B) Release an OS and beef up security and see people who have made a living compensating for your poor coding in the past complain that they can't in the future.
Or C) Release an OS and beef up security. Give hooks into the new arch for outside companies to hook their software into.
This is the problem we are seeing, and primarily why people don't like MS.
Seriously, does this shock anybody? VoIP is the next big disruptive tech, and it scares the bejesus out of the larger less mobile companies, given it's ability to bring the traditionally high cost of entry product to a much much lower level. Lest ye forget, that's exactly why we have to worry about the telcos fucking up the QoS on our packets ( ala net neutrality ).
Of course, on the other side of the aisle is Vonage, and frankly I'd rather roll my own and get the increased feature set that something like Asterisk can provide.
So let's insulate the computer? I'll grant you that you may not be depending on the case to radiate the heat, but does that give us license to insulate the damn thing?
Except there are more heat sources in the case aside from the CPU; Memory, chipset, PSU and video cards are all candidates. Should we run tubes to each device? Where would you put it on the PSU?
No matter how you slice it, wood is a bad idea for a computer case.
For my applications, I try to let the software speak for itself.
Asterisk is a perfect example. You can either drop some serious cash on a system which isn't as featureful or flexible, or you can get asterisk which is a fraction of the cost and works better ( in most cases ).
You don't need to really push this option. You just give them the options and they choose the one they want.

Too good for tech support eh?

Doesn't matter. Given the measures I take on the server, I see about 2 to 3 spams a week.
What I found funny is your Email address is a required field in the form. There is no way I'm giving them my Email address.
:D
I found it delightfully ironic.
My mail server uses spamhaus. I gave went ahead and gave it to them.

I think we've all learned something important here today.
Someone thinks pretty highly of themselves and their place in the world.
News flash; Code and end user interfaces will always change.
The biggest news flash would be if they actually changed for the better.
Cisco, a company I don't like, would use this against AT&T or comcast. Two other companies I don't like.
I fail to see the problem here.
I thought we were operating from the assumption that programs like this did both.
Actually, there is still quite a bit story left in the universe; Joss said it himself. Even were there not, I'd still pay to watch two hours of TV show again, assuming they were new.
hell, even were they not new actually.
Dude, you are just under ID 1 million;
1) Why would we care that you are leaving. Of course it's because you want the drama and crap.
2) Your ID is worthless.
kthxbye
What could possibly be useful about so much learning on the anatomy of homosexual dwarves, I've no idea.
I am shocked, sir. Shocked and deeply offended. It was Albino homosexual dwarves.
However, if it turns out that such knowledge is somehow important--perhaps vital to the continuance of human existance, for example, he's your man.
You will rue the day, my friend. Oh yes. You will rue it HARD CORE.

Wood is a very bad idea for a case.
Except there are more heat sources in the case aside from the CPU; Memory, chipset, PSU and video cards are all candidates. Should we run tubes to each device? Where would you put it on the PSU?
No matter how you slice it, wood is a bad idea for a computer case.
I depend on my case to radiate heat; Wood is exceptionally bad at this.
So while it's pretty, it's not worth it in my opinion.
For my applications, I try to let the software speak for itself.

Seriously, we were supposed to have these things *years* ago. The scientific community should be ashamed of themselves.
( yes, this is a joke )
Wish we *had* public transport to use.
