  1. Perl on PHP and MySQL Web Development, 2nd Edition · · Score: -1, Troll

I've used Perl in the past for small scripts to get work done on my personal computer (a Dell Inspiron), but I'm wondering if using it to craft Web pages is easy. The reason I ask here is that I've heard PHP + SQL is a bit easier than Perl + SQL.

Also, can one use Perl or PHP to link up to a non-SQL database such as Oracle?

The company wants me to create a dynamic site (for internal use only) to track projects and bug reports, so I've been researching dynamic Web technologies for the past several weeks.

  3. The reason people steal music on PressPlay + Roxio? · · Score: 2, Insightful

    (in my opinion, that is)

I honestly feel that the decline of music quality and the tiredness of the rock genre after nearly 50 years of three-chord songs has helped to contribute to the alarming rate at which people steal music from online sources.

Who in their right mind would pay eighteen dollars for a CD that probably contains only one or two good songs?

I'm not saying stealing is the right thing to do, and I certainly wouldn't teach my children how to steal music online, but I kind of feel like the music industry "had it coming", so to speak.

But what Linux needs is a fresh look and a fresh batch of research into creating a truly intuitive desktop computing experience.

Windows isn't intuitive, but because it's so popular, people have had to learn how to get work done and consistent interfaces across Microsoft applications helps this.

But if Linux hackers want a new crowd of free software users, they need to attract them not only with the low price of open source software, but a high intuitivity index of the software itself.

Someone please make Linux more easy to use. It's too hard.

Granted, I can't tinker with Linux at work anymore (based on NDA/contract stuff), but I really enjoyed the opportunity to truly learn Linux with Gentoo rather than have my hand held like Mandrake does.

If you're going to spend the time and effort to deal with Linux and try to learn it, you might as well go all-out rather than just learning how to install it.

I personally recommend Debian or Gentoo if you want to learn more about operating systems, and I recommended Mandrake if you just want to use Linux (for price reasons or philosophical reasons).

Gentoo is great, but make sure it's the right flavor of Linux for you. I miss Gentoo some days when I'm stuck in Windows with another blue screen.

Linux is just plain fun. Sure, it's not great if you need to get a lot of work done, but it's an amazing teaching tool if you want to truly learn computers.

    Linux is great.

  24. Not surprising on AI Going Nowhere? · · Score: -1, Troll

I find it sickening to watch most artificial intelligence researchers steal the fruits of other people's labor. But it goes further than that; their reasoning is circular and therefore invalid. In other words, they always begin an argument with its conclusion (e.g., that particularism and game theory are identical concepts) and therefore -- not surprisingly -- they always arrives at that very conclusion.

Most artificial intelligence researchers' ebullitions are complete drivel. But what, you may ask, does any of that have to do with the theme of this post, viz., that spiteful coders and students, motivated by either Stalinism or a desire to lead a revisionism-prone, abhorrent life, are eager to help it exploit the feelings of charity and guilt that many people have over the plight of the homeless?

It is bootless to speculate on the matter, but it should be noted that it's really not bloody-mindedness that compels me to make this world a kinder, gentler place. It's my sense of responsibility to you, the reader.

Whenever there's an argument about most artificial intelligence researchers' devotion to principles and to the evolution of digital brain systems, all one has to do is point out that we must speak neither of the past nor of the far future but rather focus on the here and now, specifically on the daunting matter of most artificial intelligence researchers' backwards double standards. That should settle the argument pretty quickly.

Lastly, most artificial intelligence researchers have no soul.
