Yes, they have to check the acceptance box to install it, at least on the one app I used that had gator, that's how it worked. Afaik, they don't install gator without explicitly getting permission from the user. As a linux user, I really don't care, to me, the more virus's and crap like gator that there are for windows, the more likely people are to switch to Linux :-)

Despite what the company does, after interviewing with them, I felt like it would be a good solid company to work for. They had a great dot-com atmosphere, used open source technology, and paid well - my position was for Perl programmer. And they even allowed you to work from home. I didn't have the XML::Parser experience they were looking for, so I didn't get the job. One thing they revealed to me was that they did actually track what you were searching in Google. This part I didn't like. If they can watch you on Google, they can capture data from any form you fill out - although they claimed Google was the only form they captured data from.

Spammers take advantage because they don't want to be discovered, so they use fake names, addresses etc. Since it's never verified, nobody knows. If you don't want to put your contact info, get a PO box, why else wouldn't you want your name associated with a domain, unless it's something illegal or in poor taste, in which case the internet can do without it.

deathbed? wtf are you talking about? it's not like he's going to regret it the rest of his life whichever decision he makes.

You make thousands of decisions in your life, some good, some bad. In the end, you live with the choices you made.

If you really aren't that passionate about your job, and see it as a means of paying the bills, etc. quit. hell you found a job once, you can find another one again.

However, we may be lookin' at another 4 years of W. so maybe you are better off taking the tour.

They're not ALL going to India. A lot of business to value the local candidate for obvious reasons (local, speaka-englisha, skillful).

If you move 2 hours away, you'll probalby still have access to broadband, and will be out of the city. If you're in a technology sector, you can probably convince them to let you telecommute 3 or 4 days a week. And come into the office 1 or 2 times a week. That cuts down on your long distance commuting, but shows you're still dedicated enough to your job to come in once in awhile and let them know you still work there. I have been telecommuting since november and we have meetings once a week I need to attend. You can always resort to dialup too. If you're a sysadmin or programmer, you can still ssh into your server and do your work in vim/emacs without needing a huge pipe. Forget about the porn and mp3s though - you will get used to the slow browsing after a few weeks :-) Other option is satellite - no idea if it's any good though.

See if there's a local GATE chapter. When I was in it as a kid, they did outings to different places, like the Exploratorium in San Francisc, the Bay Model in Sausalito, and quite a few other education/science oriented outings/classes. Here's the California Branch. I couldn't find an official national page, maybe I'm not that gifted anymore :-(
