  1. HGST FTW! on Backblaze Dishes On Drive Reliability In their 50k+ Disk Data Center · · Score: 1

First off, based on this I would be buying HGST drives exclusively. 1.8% or less failure rate? Yes please! I've been buying HGST drives (mostly Ultrastar's) for a couple of years now. They are super fast and reliable in my home NAS. My second choice would be WD RE drives. In bulk the price difference between HGST and Seagate cannot be THAT much... I would think the additional reliability would give you a better ROI instead of keeping replacing cheaper drives.

  2. Can't we all just get along? on FreeBSD Vows to Compete with Desktop Linux · · Score: 1

First off let me say that I am a fan of all open source, even as I type this on my Windows box. Commercial apps like Photoshop, Sony Vegas, and others keep me from switching, however the new intel mac's are looking attractive. Anyhow to get to my point is that I find the family of BSD's less confusing than linux. I think the fact that there are 18 zillion different flavors of linux out there hurts it more than anything. I have played with several distro's but everytime I hear about another distro I think to myself "Maybe that is better" so its almost like you can never decide. When you need help, I find the FreeBSD documentation to be levels above anything I have seen for any free linux distro, although redhat does have a pretty good KB....but seriously the FreeBSD handbook is top notch. Then comes the issue of updating and installing software. The ports system is just slick, it just works, and I have never been in dependency hell. I know more recent linux distro's are getting better in this department but I still think the ports work better. Now I am not a hardcore programmer or anything like that so I cannot comment on specific kernel level things, however I use FreeBSD on both servers, desktops, and my laptop and I don't have any issues. Performance, uptime, security, and hardware support are all satisfactory.

To address it not being an "Enterprise OS"...I think thats crap...and if a major vendor like Oracle came out with support for BSD, I think you might find a shift in people giving BSD more serious thought.

  5. Re:Hmmm, is it that complicated on Recommend Apple, Lose Your Job? · · Score: 1

When Steve Jobs introduced the Xserve....he was quite humble, and admitted that apple is hitting the server market late and have a lot of ground to make up. Sure it doesn't have redundant power supplies and doesn't have scsi...but I think its a great first generation product.

Another point on the IDE drives is that personally I have read and agree that they are getting just as good as scsi....ide drives are becomming very reliable, and for the price its a great solution. Many manufactures have 5 yr warranties on them, which eases the pain if your running them in a server.

    Kudos to apple!

  8. you need MS for real world on A College Without Microsoft? · · Score: 1

I like the dual boot idea, if you think about it, a person preparing for a job in the real world is going to need to know MS, because thats what many organizations use in the real world....if think only allowing a *nix flavor will take away from the college enrollment.
