A minor correction; China has built Skynet, this is simply an addon!
America is re-building the F-35 due to so many failed attempts at getting it right!
Hey Femto! Come down and join in, even for a holiday. China is kickin arse in places like Shanghai for this kind of stuff. watch out America! (and the rest of the world) all these small mash ups WILL generate some super cool stuff in the future and China will profit in more ways than "just money"
Hi, I would recommend a small off grid system, say JUST for running the computer.
You would need at minimum a 1kW system:
#6x 170watt solar panels [total 1020 watts].
#Roof mounting hardware.
#Low voltage wiring.
#Charge controller.
#Battery banks.
#Inverter.
This system depending on how much sun insolation in your area would give you about a minimum of 120kwh/ month during winter. you could size it larger depending on your needs/ wants and the amount of money you want to spend. The price my company sells these for is about USD7000, so it may not be cost effective.
An alternate suggestion would be to buy a smaller version just to supply all those wall warts around the house. you might be able to do that for your USD2000. perhaps a 200-400watt system might just be right for you.
A grid tie system is NOT for the hobbyist!
I would love to test this using a digital camera. You can try 'looking' at the remote ir light yourself by just pointing the camera to it. I imagine if one was to setup a digital movie camera you may well be able to 'see' the ir beams hitting the monitor. kinda more 'security through obscurity'?? Assuming this can work or be adapted (hacked?) to work what of all the 'online security cameras?' puts a new spin on googledorks....
recycled 'news' just get used to it and have your positive input or just go read something else.:)
This motivates me to get together a 'purpose built' geek packaged solar setup for running a computer up to say 3-400 watts/ 24 hours a day. (for my business.) I am DAMN sure many slashdotters would be interested as I am myself.... anyway here is the 'pre'slashvertisment. http://www.aquatooth.com/ Renewable energy solutions
right, 3x2 metres, thats about 4x175watt of the panels I sell = 700watts that is about 1729 Watt hrs per day. See http://www.midsummerenergy.co.uk/solar_panel_infor mation/solar_panel_calculator.html for a great little 'solar calculator'
solar panels I sell 4x175 would cost about $US800 each so $US3200 ohh and add the cost of inverters, installation, etc. so double it = $US6400. (less the government rebate if one exists in your area)
some more input to the math would be great.... come on math minded slashdotters!

'normal sized home' will mean different things in different parts of the world. I kinda assume you are from US where a 'normal sized home' uses a LARGE amount of energy. Compare with a 'normal sized home' in a developing country....
Change is needed in peoples habits -especially us 'westerners'.
Replace those energy hungry lights with supergeek LEDs for a start!
Note that I am biased (shameless slashvertisment) http://www.aquatooth.com/ Renewable energy solutions
Solar modules will get cheaper in the next 2-5 years. I think that the number of new factories coming online and ramping up production here in China is the answer to your little production problem. the US needs to get its act together to make it easier for people to install the equipment. Geeks like you and me should think about running their servers on 'clean power' which really makes sense for running computer equipment. oh, and for extra geek points:)

being in china now i am getting really concerned about SARS. while i am a long way from the epicentre the gov here is very quiet and now there are reports of possible infections in beijing...http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/singapo re/story/0,4386,179331,00.html
if beijing becomes a new epicentre for spread of this then we are ALL in deep sh*t cos its such a big city (i think 13m+) the first thing that will happen is that everyone will want to LEAVE in different directions WHAT A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN.
i cant imagine the chinese gov (as with any other) preventing the spread. no way of "patching" this one!

correction, sounds like; eye, chee, yee
in Chinese, it sounds like this: ee, chee, yee
as the the '1' yeah put that down to an automated '1' for the mention of BOFH!

20 percent in watt, 18 months? I'd like to see that!

the highest efficiency solar module that I sell is 17%. the 'average' would be 16% efficiency. /vertisement http://www.aquatooth.com/

try this link for more info http://www.hohmanntransfer.com/mn/0402/09.htm
dammit there is a space between the 0 and , but i cant remove it
could you help by telling me how to post a clickable link??
yes i can confirm th unstability. couldnt get http://www.slashdot.org to load AT ALL but plain http://slashdot.org works anyone know why????
