a real-time os can forfill the action in 2 hours, if it was requested to do so.. the point is, that this request is forfilled !
(i.e. i need those nuke-sensor-informations processed in x ms, or they are gone;)
the "x" is not important, it is important that the request is forfilled !
Speaking of tape backup.... Which software do you use ? We have a quite HUGE amount of data (70-80 gb), that we want to backup on a MLR tape (tandberg MLR1)
We did try various software:
- tar: has problems when tape is full. not easy to restore single files
- arkeia: strange interface, need to buy costly updates regular
- tapeware: has problems with hardware compression
- bru: had some problems I forgot..
are there any GOOD backup solutions for linux out there ????
Yes.. of course.. everybody loves smashing sendmail.. but it REALLY has it strong parts i've yet to see in other mail clients:
- sasl. need to say more ?
- thanks to sasl: smtp-auth (with cram-md5, etc;)
- starttls support
those features are a MUST for anyone who has roaming clients.... together with some good mail-client (like mulberry) and cyrus imap server,
they make a perfect combination...
smtp-auth ist SO much better than those pop-relay patches.... esp. when used with cram-md5 passwords;)
(I don't mind someone sniffing my e-mail.... but
I DO mind sniffing my passwords;)
For a while you could run TNG and HEAD together.. smbd from HEAD, rest from TNG... did not try it for some time...
Best way today is to create a second interface (like eth0:1) and bind both Samba-versions to different interfaces...
(eth0 would be HEAD/2.2 and eth0:1 would be tng)
so you could use a good PDC and a good fileserver on the same machine....
TNG is much more about RPC than about filesharing....
with TNG you can add users to your smbpasswd whith the NT 4.0 usrmgr.exe.... there is an remote smbstatus for srvmgr.exe, and many more things planned....
Well.. in the codebook you only had the encrypted data.
Here you have the data and the program that checks the watermark (softice is your friend..;)
Thats a general problem... you can NEVER build a 100% secure copy protection.
(All new games out there are copy-protected.. ALL of them are cracked after a very short time;)
But I still have some problems with SDMI.. IF i decrypt it, and save it in a standart format and play it with some open source player....;)
I allways thought that sbin stands for "static binaries", i.e. binaries that should not be linked with shared libraries (anyone remember those LD_PRELOAD exploits;)
So.. I can predict that this will move our PC-hardware shops outside germany.
Why not order your CD-R's in Luxenbourg ? They don't have this kind of nonsense, and they even have lower Vat... And thanks to EU-Trading laws its legal to import those from EU-States...
So.. the (german) goverment is killing a whole industry for the sake of some rich bastards wo bought your local politican a new house;)

Illegal character in hostname; underscores are not allowed
I totally agree to you.
While I use Linux for about 6 Servers where I work, (running apache, mysql, samba, cyrus-imapd, etc) I prefer NT4 or Win2K as Client OS. Sure. They can be a real bitch to install, but once you made some auto-installer or some hd-image, everything is fine.
The GUI of NT/2k seems so much faster (and yes, we got a lot of G400's here, that has the highest x-window 2d benchmark scores !!!).
If I want to use x-window programms, I usually use exceed or something simmilar to display them on the NT client (which are most time only xload/xosview;).
I hope that the new X11 rendering modell by that suse-employee will be much faster/smoother than the current one...
Yeah.. but these machines are horrible. They had more than 6 total crashes in this year. Each with a downtime of more than 6 hours !. (one was nearly one day. Imagine! 180.000 Domains gone !;)
(Although that provider states, that there are 1.000.000 Domains on that machine.)
Also they run the web-service for the domains on one, and use the other for e-mail and database. Both are Sun E6500...
(I just happen to have a domain right there. It sucks. I should have used the other big one, it uses linux-cluster;)
I think his point is that this driver just disables the ability to use 3D. I just installed it, an DRI doesn't work anymore. (Oh.. ok it did not before either, but now it doesn't crash, I only get software rendering;)

Your quite correct. All german companys on the Samba Commercial support site got a letter to stop their business, and pay about 1000 us$.
They claim to have a trademake for the spoken (!) word SAMBA in the category "data processing programms"
Interesting sidenote is, that one of the german contributors for Samba, Volker Lendeke has a trademark on the Samba logo (you know.. the thing with the two arrows) here in germany.
Things are really getting worse here... I bet in near future you must write every second word or so with (tm) attached;)
(Other famous examples of german trademaks :
"explorer","ASP","webspache")
On the Heise forum there was only a lot of flaming about this topic, does anyone know what to do agaist this. I can't go to the patent's office everytime I write a document and check all
the words there for trademaks !
What about those ignorant Website Administrators that filter out ICMP completely (because there are many evil attacks that use ICMP;) and dont't know what consequences it will have ? (besides on not counting them;) Samba Information HQ
It seems to me from the HD benchbarks, that the *BSD's are running the IDE drives in DMA Mode, and that it is not enabled by default in the linux kernel, so performance does suck. That supports the myth of SCSI being faster than IDE..
uhm .. "realtime" has nothing to do with speed ...

Uhmm .. that looks a lot like memory problems ...
;), wrong information in the SPD, or simply bad ram.
... IIRC about 90-95% were faulty .. (like wrong timings in SPD, etc)

I got a nokia 8210 with IRDA. With irda phones you normally can use them as modem ...
.. (although somewhat slow, on 9600 kbit/sec ....)
so far I only did try out some imap client, but that worked very well
