lol, this defines slashdot for me nowadays. This could only have been moderated up by a GNOME fan. How is it worthy of my 3 point viewing threshold? It isn't.

GNOME is pretty attractive, IMO the default theme has the edge over Plastik, and I'm a KDE user. However I think it's clear the new GNOME theme was influenced by Plastik. But I expect Plastik was influenced by something else anyway. We all share ideas, that's why we do so well. Die patents die!

    Mod me up pls!

  3. Can't agree, sorry on GNOME 2.12 Released · · Score: 1

I use XP, OSX and KDE in equal amounts everyday.

So, apparently the attractiveness of each is a matter of opinion, because I sure don't agree with your assessment! On sheer initial looks I rate GNOME better than OSX, and based on the screenshots, better than Vista too. KDE (Plastik) I rate much higher than XP, but not higher than OSX (only just), nor GNOME.

Sure OSX (and Vista so we are told), have excellent graphical effects and transitions that improve the user-experience. But I still prefer the way GNOME looks, it's nice, and it the theme is more usable than Aqua. I'm not talking about the general usability of the environments mind, just the themes. I haven't used GNOME enough to comment on its general usability, although initial impressions suggested they have a good attention to detail and some great ideas that KDE could benefit from.

  4. Re:Waiting for apps isn't annoying, focus stealing on GNOME 2.12 Released · · Score: 1

KDE introduced focus stealing protection at 3.2. Even OSX and Windows haven't done this yet, which I find bemusing. I'm sure GNOME will be next to implement it. Although I thought I read somewhere that they already had?

Anyway, yeah for sure KDE doesn't do what you described, and yeah, it's nice.

Thus we will make a hydrogen economy viable using solar power with the intermediaries of agriculture, the dinner table, the dustman and GM-bacteria.

Actually it shows how little you understand about open source or commercial software development. But that doesn't surprise me, slashdot is where everyone pretends to know so much about these things, but actually they all prove how little they know whenever they write a post.

You are totally right about the impact of poor spelling of course. It's just that programmers of commercial software don't have to care about marketing and programmers of open source software often really don't care about marketing. And yes this means they also don't care about being taken seriously by regular people (even those who make business decsions). You have to understand that many open source programmers really do only write the code for the sake of writing something cool, they don't give a shit if you like them, like the code or like the software. They especially don't give a shit if you find their spelling and grammar poor.

  8. Re:How about a stable ABI? on 2.6.13 Linux Kernel Released · · Score: 1

In an ideal world we could have a stable ABI and all the benefits of rapid development, and rapid improvement. But that is not possible currently. We choose the benefits of an unstable ABI, and those of us who understand the realities do not try and sell Linux to people who can't use it. I'm sorry someone lied to you about Linux, I'm sorry some zealot made Linux out to be something it isn't. The reality is Linux is not the same as what you are used to, and it may never be. Please don't be annoyed about this, it doesn't achieve anything.

I have a lot of respect for how MS manage to keep Windows so ABI stable. But it carries a lot of dead-weight with it. I love Linux because it strives for perfection. You apparently value other properties in your operating system, which is fine, but you have to accept that Linux is not for you.

People do all sorts of studies, often for their own personal masterbation. But basically it is often not possible to know what will be useful, however often these things do become useful to other areas of science in time.

For instance, nobody could anticipate that studies of water would be useful, but 100s of years later these very studies had lead to people making rocket fuel due to there being abundant knowledge about the chemistry of water and hydrogen and oxygen.

I often feel that it is a waste of money going to space, but the reality is that the next generation may well find our research in this area invaluable.

This study might be considered inflamatary, but in reality the guy is just a scientist and his research may well be invaluable to some people in the near future. Just like with my open source project Filelight, the work of one man on the GNU large file extenstion for glibc is invaluable to me. Even though he may well have wondered why he was bothering at the time.

I hope to have enlightened you, but chances are you'll not read this comment and continue to think badly of obscure science. After all, science isn't worth the time unless it cures cancer innit.

But the world is politically correct nowadays which means it's ok to use statistics to save you money testing everyone's driving ability and give women cheaper insurance, but it's not ok to save money and give men a better interest rate on their bank accounts because their are statistically proven to be better at saving money and maintaining their finances.

Yay for politcal correctness, which actally means: favour the previously unfavoured.

This study is just a study, it doesn't prove men are better than women, or that men are even more intelligent than women. Those are two possibilities. It is also possible that the study proves the IQ test is biased towards men. Or that the technique used in the study is biased to make men look more intelligent.

This is why the study was done, it is done to advance the science, so that in future statitisical analysis of similar topics can be done better. Get a grip, don't be offended when no offence is meant.
