    The Difference though is in the company's not the products.

    in Apple a great idea is looked at from all angles, comprise is very little as only the best is done.

    I highly don't Sony's employee's are that motivated.

    Also note the time it takes to transfer files. Firewire to usb?

    My family bought a betamax, Used them long after you couldn't buy tapes anymore. Star Wars, yep one movie per tape, 2, 4, 6 hours of recording per tape? yep that was there as well.

    My father tricked me into programing by buying a computer that had very few games that i could get easily for it. Ahhhh the days of Basic and a TI/99 4A .

    Oh well i can't program anything useful anymore, but I can use and configure any computer. I can sit down at any machine and start working my way around it in no time. What is really scary is I can then apply that knowledge faster.

    Actually learning multiple computer OS's is like learning multiple languages, The first couple are a pain but after that they start to get easier. The more you learn, the more you see the minor flaws in between the different systems, and you then chose the system with the flaws you can live with the easiest.

    Well this is way off-topic but it's so far down the chain no mod will ever see it.

    I wouldn't worry about humidity levels, Though NY tends to get lots of Snow, it's actually very dry air all winter long. As long as it stays inside a garage he shoud be fine. I would be more concerned with making sure the Hard drive platters don't stop spinning. Once it is up and running and as long as it stays running he won't have a problem till the spring thaw, and then mositure might be a probelm.

    The Of course I would have a nice Athlon burning in the box to keep the parts toasty warm.

    Nanobots, with some form of hovering engine to deal with minor(5 mph) wind. it would for the most part be reusable(you could call them back to the source) so you would only have to replace a minor number of them each time.

    Now if we can only get nano bots to build nano sized neutron bombs and load them into hand held size weapons. That would be fun.

    So according to your logic since nearly everyone runs windows their shouldn't be any real security holes, or problems with MSFT software because people only use the best products available?

    Sorry people use what is convient for them at the time, not the best. Just beause a product is widely used doesn't make it a great product. A lot of people shop at walmart to. It doesn't make Walmart the best place to try and sell your product from though.

    Every Male born in the USA, and a citizen of the USA has to register. 300 million, divide by 2, divide by some obsure statistic. leaving some 20-40 million people in the database.

    Sure glad those few hundred make a major difference.

    Well I don't need that network drive at the moment, let's just drag it off the desk.

    Also in OS X when you start dragging a mounted image the trash can turns into an eject button.

    Guess what happens when you load a blank cd, and mount an ISO image. the trash can turns into the burn cd icon.

    Unlike say windows where you have to search to find the burn or eject buttons.

    If you don't like it fine, but just because you aren't smart enough to use a Mac doesn't mean the rest of us aren't. i learned in 20 minutes, and had to ask ONE dumb question.

    Of course I learn to use OS'S other than windows long ago.

    You don't need a pilots license for hang gliders, or ulra-lights. At least the last time I looked. of course that doesn't mean you should just buy one Dying is really easy while you bounce off the ground after a fall of several hundred.

    My windows boxes over the years though not always stable, have remained relatively virus free(2-3 in 6 years) and I don't do updates. I don't patch, and I don't use IE . I run blackice firewall and that keeps the wandering ones out.

    I have exposed it to the internet directly, I the entire home network now behind a Nat & firewall. There are three desktops, and three laptops running here, of those 6 machines just the XP PRO machines get viruses. ME good to go, 98 good to go, Sometimes I think it's the people. maybe they visit sites they shouldn't in IE.

    I buy an item for $10(or it costs me $10 to produce)

    I sell it to you for $50. that means i made $40 on that one Item. That is 400% of profit.

    see it's math and you need to go back to school.

    Most of the time people can only get 30-50% on an item. Which means I must sell it for $13-$15 dollars. At $20 I hit a 100%

    This is really basic stuff.

    Every once in a while you have to destroy backwards compaitblity to move forward.

    Apple's new machines can't run OS 9 unless it is in compatiblity mode over OS X. Think similiar to WINE. It's my thought that is what MSFT is gonna use VPC for. Of course why a whole x86 chip emulation instead of just a set of libraries I will never know. maybe win32 just can't be ported and the real WINE is just a dream that can never be achieved.

    Yes and my roommates laptop with XP pro BSOD(or reboots) whenever I click the mouse on a webpage. (he can use the machine fine it's just me)

    Also even though he uses netscape his machine gets at least 2-3 new spy/ad ware programs daily.

    Compare that to my linux box or OS X box

    Neither have any.

    Yes he uses OS X daily FOR work, he chooses windows for gaming. i choose OS X as it actually goes to sleep if I close the lid, and restarts in seconds when i open it. Much better than any other machine booting up(windows or Linux)

    I agree with your assesment.

    I guess it's lucky that Linux is begining to boom while the win32 api is about to be written out of exsitance by MSFT. Lognhorn is supposed to kill off the iwn32 api and replace it. My guess is that is why they bought Virtual PC, so that they could run windows inside of longhorn.

    Also hardware manufactors have been replacing hardware tasks with software ones inside windows for years. I think that is part of the reason for such buggy drivers, as they are trying to do to much in software and not enough in hardware. If the Hardware did the really hard work, of communications then the software would be more reliable.

    Of course the opposite is the MSFT way.

    If you open a small warehosue/ retail store, Your accountant will tell you will need to make a minimum average of 30% on all sales. It's just an average number.

    Places like Walmart and home depot use what is called loss leaders. selling some products at 5-10% that you see everyday, and then charge 60-70% on odd items.

    I work in a retail/warehouse business. it's really funny watching the big discount places charge lower than what I can buy some items for, and then charge 200-300% on others. Where as we go 30-40% across the board on most items, with loss leaders to stay competive with the home centers in the 5-10% range, and high end special order items we switch to 50-60% range. You can't run a business for free, nor can you screw all your customers all the time. Finding a balance is what makes you stay in business.

    No It's a really bad joke on Ballmer.

    A few weeks ago Ballmer made the annoucement he wanted $100 PC's for the 3rd world countries. He of course wanted them to run windows.

    the joke is that the reason you can't have a $100 pc running windows, is because you need to spend $50 on just Windows. Hardware guys are already running at 1-3% profit per machine, Unlike say MSFT windows and office which are running at somewhere around 400% profit per license sold.

    What Ballmer fails to realize is that people will balance that equation out. Both sides should be no higher than 30% Guess who will suffer more?

    in 1992 my Hard drive was 20 megs and it wasn't big enough.

    You increased your hard drive storage by 6,000 times and you still run out of room.

    Of course copied over my basic files from one computer to another and filed 30 gigs. Not sure which is worse. I do know that i will get at least another 10 gig's filled when I start ripping cd images for games to store locally. Laptops are great it just sucks being forced to carry the disks with you.

    I use a similar setup though I use desktop instead of tmp.

    Here's why, ifI have a bunch useless files lying around on my desktop it looks cluttered, everytime you log in you see your messy desktop. It forces you to keep it neat and organized.

    Other than that I have a bunch of primary folders, each divided into sub folders for different topics,etc.

    Images go under Photos, which are sorted by what kind of image, which can be broken down anther two or three times depending on exactly it's contents.

    Music, Documents, Projects all work the same way.

    And here is the kicker, That's what Filesystems where designed to do.

    Save yourself now.
    Either purchase or steal the full version of Adobe Acrobat, or any other software that allows you to print PDF's.

    All of my tax returns get printed to PDF's then to paper as nessecary. I don't normally keep the paper copies around for more than a year, but it's easy to keep an encrypted zip file contianing those precious documents.

    People laugh at PDF's but they are really convient, and can be read over long periods of time without dealing with MSFT's change the format per minor version games.

    Yep Solaris only runs well on Sparc and Opteron processors, with very limited other hardware.

    Linux runs on anything to one degree or another. One can force linux to even run Windows Drivers to load hardware that Linux drivers don't exsit. it's standard at Nvidia. Nvidia uses a closed Binary driver, and a source code wrapper. It's how they get around the little details of GPL.

    Solaris, well is there even a nvidia/ 3D hardware driver for it?
