Just making up numbers to prove a point. It's not the nut that's the problem. It's the government requirements. Having a critical nut fail in a helicopter can cause it to crash likely seriously injuring or even killing the crew. There are expectations that the nut will hold during the combat or SAR mission and so there are requirements to make sure the nut follows the ranges expected for that piece of hardware.

Fixed that for you. Anyone can go to Ace and buy a nut. But if I don't want to get fined $10,000 per failure, I'll hire metallurgists and engineers to make sure the 'nut' I supply exceeds the required specs.

I think it's more insurance than anything. We have the option to select a specific insurance plan where we affirm that we don't smoke thereby saving us (and probably the company) a few bucks a year. There's a bunch of 'Timmy-B-Fit' propaganda around the intranet and on posters around the company as well.

I haven't checked our handbook for a while so can't answer that one. :)

The company does require a drug test before hiring though. We work in the Emergency 911 industry so the company's a tad pickier than most. Still, it's a pretty cool place to work in general. Too bad we're so far from the Tech Center. I think that's the biggest hindrance to getting more applicants.

The softlinks guy said basically that if a slice was lost, you'd lose all access to any file that was softlinked (which made his comment worse of course). After we boggled at him, he asked if he could take back his answer :D

And company policy is set by the parent company. No smoking on campus (the smokers have to walk to the far end of the parking lot to smoke) and drug tests as it's still a federal crime.

With virtual environments it's really not a problem to give them their own Unix[0] server and I prefer it. It's much easier to schedule patches and outages when I only have to deal with one customer/department than a shared server with different maintenance windows.

Root access? Hell, Devs don't get accounts on production servers. Don't support the dev/sqa area so don't care what they have there[1]

I fix their personal laptop by installing Slackware and giving it back. They don't ask twice. :D

    [John]

[0] If it's not Unix based, I don't care as our group doesn't support it.
[1] Well, sort of. I'd rather we support the lab/sqa area so the devs have systems that mirror production. Prevents surprises and delays when we're deploying new systems.

The banks, credit card companies, utilities, etc would have to adjust to make sure mail is sent in enough time for the mailman to pick up the outbound and deliver it in time.

True. While I typically don't find anything at the movies interesting enough to see, I am sucked in by sequels or by movies that appeal to the geek in me (this year more than the past 20 or so for some reason).

For instance, I saw The Hobbit and I disliked it immensely. I have no plans to see any of the sequels (Bilbo saved Thorin? Seriously? I don't care what some fucking appendix says.)

More recently I was going to see After Earth. I do like Will Smith. But friends told me I'd dislike it primarily for the reasons I like Will Smith. In general he's a happy, larger than life character. In After Earth, as I understand, he's very robotic. I think that's why I didn't have any interest in seeing MIB 3D. And what's worse, I don't recall what I saw that night instead.

I did go see World War Z and did my best to ignore that it wasn't supposed to follow the book. But having three serious (serious!) zombie attacks due to noise (air base, Jerusalem, and the airplane) and then at the end to kick a fucking can in a well lit cafeteria? I almost walked out the second time they made unnecessary noise. (The popcorn sucked big time which is really the clincher "I want some buttered, salty, far too expensive popcorn; what's playing at the theater?")

From looking at the previews, R.I.P.D. looked okay (not enough to trigger the popcorn response though). White House Down and The Lone Ranger looked pretty stupid. After Earth and Pacific Rim didn't get good reviews from my friends and I wasn't really interested in Pacific Rim anyway. Humorously The Lone Ranger previews knocked home theater setups "Action this big shouldn't be seen on a screen this small" Way to alienate the folks who are actually coming to see the movies.

Anyway, nothing upcoming looks good enough to consider regardless of their "Analytics". Obviously I'm not the target audience. I think I can just go and buy the popcorn though :)

Older guy here. I grew up reading the papers including The Washington Post (and the Star before it went under) and locally the Denver paper (the Post?) I currently do pick up the local city paper when I find it.

I do understand that ads drive the business but since the loss of the Classifieds, the papers have inundated us with ads including under the fold and sticker ads on the front page that rip the page when you try to remove it. The ads inside were the worst though. A single column or less of news (mostly from some other paper or the AP, specially selected) and the rest was an ad or two or more. And the middle four pages were completely ads. Even the editorials were mostly from other papers (in the Denver paper).

And the delivered paper would end up under the car or in the bushes or in the puddles assuming it arrived at all. (Honestly that didn't happen all that often but often enough to be noteworthy and annoying).

I changed to a 4 day subscription (Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun) mostly for the cat box material :) Last year I finally just stopped my subscription. I get regular coupon packages and coupon mailers in the mail and the various grocery stores send me targeted coupons based on my purchases.

For some reason, a synapse failed and I accepted a 'friend' request on Facebook only to discover he's about as racist a person that I've encountered for many years. I even tried to have a discussion with him pointing out that your childhood experiences in a small town in Alabama isn't reflective of all members of that race. But he wouldn't accept it.

So instead of wasting my time and unnecessarily increasing my blood pressure, I choose to not discuss politics with, well most anyone that I actually know and have kept my voting choices somewhat to myself (he did start in on my choices because I had a bumper sticker to which he commented: "I thought you were smarter than that").

Heck, I rode my bike through the northern part of Idaho and saw some pretty scary bumper stickers (Obama with a cross-hairs over his face for example). I was concerned enough to not stop until I got to Montana.
