    substance addiction differs from say, internet addiction, in that the reward chemical is supplied by a needle and not by the brain.

    the level of addiction only ever varies from person to person, but an addictive personality will always be addicted to something at all times.

    myself for example, I am not a very addictive personality so i don't find i need to go back to something again and again. I've also never had an trouble drinking or with any other substance i've tried. One of my friends on the other hand got hooked on the whacky tabacy after only a couple of tries and spent every waking moment from then on thinking of schemes to get more.

    addiction is a driving force in humans, you never get rid of addiction you just replace it with something less destructive.... i mean lets face it these kids COULD be addicted to crack instead. i think computers are a pretty healthy outlet for such personalities.

    yep, i worked for years on the same pc doing development under freebsd and never had a speed problem until i changed jobs to a windows environment. now i have to upgrade because VS takes 10 minutes to load if i have sql server managment open.

    no, it's reliable and a step in the right direction for security. it just takes way too much system resources to do what is essentially a simple thing.

    depending on your business it'd be less painful and expensive to move to linux.

    there are some industries where they just can't do it, but if you have the inhouse resources and your not tied to a 3rd party app that's windows only, now would be a good time to make the pitch to managment.

    The thing that bugs me the most is the additional system resources it hogs - i buy a pc to run applications not run an OS. look at anything that runs both vista an xp and xp always has lower requirments. MS would win a lot of fans if they made OS releases they used the same or less resources instead of massive bloatware, or atleast show SOMETHING useful that's hogging the additional memory and CPU time.

    the old battle cry of child labour in the coal mines just isn't the norm, and if it is happening i'll bet it's the locals doing it to other locals. but lets just say your right..... even in that event it's STILL BETTER then sending the children off to be sold as sex slaves or to work the fields till their dead, which is the only alternative they often have. hence why they keep coming back, because they know the jobs offered by the western companys are a better deal.

    Your entire tirade on cheap labour is horseshit.

    what you are suggesting would take jobs away from poor people in countries which desperately need them, and who's ONLY competitive advantage is that they can under cut competing labour markets.

    paying someone 10c an hour in a country where that 10c an hour buys food for their family is NOT exploitation, it's oppertunity.

    I will agree with your statement that CEO's and directors need to be held more accountable for their screw ups. as an example i'd use the enron scum bags.

    1. a public flogging with a cat of 9 tails.

    2. stipped of all assets and left with $100 in the bank.

    3. any assets in their families names should be denied to them.

    ANAL, but i can't see that standing up in court.

    reason being that you can't knowingly allow someone to commit a crime so that you may profit from it.

    the other problem with that tactic is the moment they DO sue someone all the details will come out and IF there is anything to fix, it'll get fixed and then the game is over.

    I suspect they will continue to try bully everyone and make them sign NDA's to prevent their bogus claims being shot to pieces.

    having said that, i think the reason they wont say is because their claim is FUD and they have nothing on linux.
