    it's a very very wrong decision.

    Al Gore owned a small ZINC mine until 2003 which polluted the shit out of the local river. He also owns a massive mansion that uses a shit load of power. If he really believed his own bullshit he would be off living in a mud hut (since that's the life style he is attempting to brow beat the rest of us into)

    and when you run out? the point i'm trying to impress on people here is that installations of this size require constant maintenance, it's in space it's expensive to do. it's a significant cost that must be addressed.

    idunno, it just seems like a massively complex, expensive solution to something we don't have a problem with, and won't have a problem with in the forseeable future.

    by all means reasearch, and if they can make it work and make economical sense, great. i'll remain skeptical until they solve the launch and maintenance issues.

    my point is what makes you think the solar panel will generate more power with more light? they don't catch all the energy that falls on the earth, so more in space won't make a difference. your 160 watt panel on earth is still only going to be a 160 watt panel in space...

    $18,000 USD/kg is the cheapest i've heard of.

    if it's geosynchronous, you still have night time to deal with, since *shock* the earth will block the sun on you.

    what makes you think your power production will double out in space suddenly. solar panels are operating at their limits under the measley solar rays we get here on earth.

    People here keep claiming that the more intense sunlight will result in high power generation, but i'm skeptical of this.

    solar cells here now aren't capable of extracting more then 35% of the light that makes it to earth now, so they won't do any better in space.

    the only type of solar generation that will produce more power in space due to the more intense soalr rays will be some form of mirror heating, and that present a whole bunch of other problems.

    i'm also curious as to how they will keep the solar array in a sationary orbit? if it's not, you will still end up with the problem of night time

    There's more important hurdles to get over before we do anything like this. namely making exiting the earth's atmosphere cheap and safe.

    just how do you propose to get the electricity back to earth from venus.

    how do you propose we maintain them from that distance? yes, solar cells aren't this eternal source of power people think they are. expect to need to do rolling replacments every 10 years atleast, if not more under those conditions.

    whats really hypocritical around here is that the second people are in trouble, the first thing they do is call the cops, the very same people who shrilly proclaim how corrupt police are.

    in countries where there's a working court system and decent oversight, the police forces are for the most part very honest. I've known plenty of cops, they've all been decent people. not saints mind you but they've all had a good sense of fairness.

    there's been 2 examples given. the woman who was arrested at a protest and the florida jackass in the library.

    both of them were shot down very comprehensively - do i really need to recap for you? in any event, even 2 examples is hardly proof of gross misuse. in fact it would be amazingly good considering the crap police put up with every day.

    I would however like to note the wonderful level of angst you are suffering purely because i refuse to argee with you. I choose to look at the situation calmly and not get emotive, something you are clearly not capable of doing. you have resorted to name calling, completely giving up any pretense of logic or proving your point with facts.

    no, it's wasn't "suprise taser" they warned him so many fucking times it wasn't funny "get up or we will taser you, get up or we will taser you".

    he was in a college computer lab and refused to produce ID when asked ( which was a condition of entry i might add) and then refused to leave when asked by staff. if you had some nut job at work that refused to identify themself and refused to leave you'd call the cops as well.

    he then refused to leave when the cops asked him. it's not clear from the video if he was acting aggresive or not because the one i saw didn't show the start of it, but i'm betting he was resisting a simple hand on the shoulder and being lead out the door. cops don't pull tasers out at the drop of a hat like all the idiots on here think, fuck do you have any idea of the PAPER WORK invovled for just unholstering the taser? they want to avoid it if possible.

    Oh what a load of bullshit. the guy was in a psychotic rage, the cops were trying to HELP HIM by taking off the cuffs and put him in a restraint chair (which is a lot more comfortable). he continues to fight with them and they are forced to subdue him with the taser.

    right in the article is states in black and white "According to the Gwinnett county medical examiner, it is unclear if the Taser caused Williams' death."

    so stop claiming they tased him to death as if it's some kind of fact.

    why you think a fucking digg discussion is some kind of proof is beyond me....

    in short, yes it's a tragic accident. but the cops used the only tool they had, and used it correctly. you say not to tase things your scared of? this was a enraging jailbird who's own wife was afraid of him, i'd say that's good cause to be afraid of him, and use all means you have to subdue him.

    the problem with your argument is that that's NOT when police are using tasers. if you assult a cop, i support their right to arrest you. doing the old 5yo trick of rubber legs doesn't count as a defense ok?
