if the fix affects a service i'm currently running, you still have to restart the service, so all this is doing is perpetuating the usual stupid uptime measurment of performance, which isn't indicative of the systems avaliablity.

i wouldn't suggest one single psu for a whole center, just one per rack. surely it would be cheaper then messing around mounting batteries to each server? for one thing it'd make the racks top heavy if the rack wasn't 100% full.
i don't know that i agree with some of googles design choices. do they account for details such as 10 small batteries are more expensive than 1 large battery of the same capacity?
and why have a PSU for each unit, why not just run 12v power rails to each server and do the ac/dc conversion on a larger transformer further down the line with larger batteries providng the back up for clusters of servers? after all no psu is cheaper than a psu with just the 5v taken out.

I don't think they should go to jail or even wear a massive fine, they aren't violent criminals and it's debatable that they have even cost anyone money. but what they were doing under swedish law was illegal ffs.
school teachers aren't police, and shouldn't even imagine they have the authority to perform a strip search. if they think the kid has shoved it up his ass - call the cops and get them to do it. that should be the end of this story. it makes me fearful for when i have children, because if i have a child and they are subjected to anything like this i'd probably do something drastic.

wind won't provide a base load, it'll be hellish expensive and it's not without environmental impact of it's own. if you want real alternative which work now and we could start deploying tomorrow at a fraction of the cost of hair brained schemes like this, look at molten salt solar, nuclear and to a lesser extent tidal.
