going from stealing a laptop to murder is a pretty big leap, believe it or not there are people that would steal a laptop but wouldn't dream of murdering someone (they weren't related to at least)
If they're not famous why are they trying to gag facebook and twitter? This is not the first brain dead girl to have the plug pulled, why are these people soooo special that anyone would care so much as to go on twitter or facebook and talk about it?
And now I'm curious, along with probably a million other internet users, as to who this girl is. Anyone know yet?
Exactly. RC helicopters have been around since the 80s and I don't remember any assassins using one to kill someone. Sure this has a camera but tiny wireless cameras have been out since the 90s and no RC murders yet.
Nukes will never work. Soon as someone launches nukes every government on the planet will turn against them and it'll be WWIII. Even if the US launched nukes we'd be wiped off the planet by every other country's nukes.
The reason we use laser guided everything is because we have to show the world we're not trying to kill everyone, we're trying to kill only the bad guys, and we you can't kill just the bad guys if you level the entire city with a crap ton of multi-thousand dollar dumb bombs. Laser guided isn't perfect and sometimes a school full of children still gets leveled, but at least it shows we're trying our best to get as close as possible with the latest and greatest in technology.
People hate the police... until someone's breaking into their house and who do they call? The US is the same, everyone hates us until another country is threatening invasion or a dictator is slaughtering tens of thousands, and who do they run to? France? China? Mexico? No, good ol'USA
"I haven't had a single laptop last a single year past the expensive addon warrenty period. After my second lappy fail I bought myself a desktop for the first time in many years."
Out of the dozen or so laptops I've owned only one was brand new and they've all lasted several years. Right now I have a Fujitsu tablet that is running fine despite being a few years old, replacing the battery really breathed new life into it, and the core 2 duo Acer seems to be doing fine despite some apparent water damage visible at the sides of the LCD
Sounds like the people with the $2500 tablet PCs need to file in small claims, and the ones with the cheap PCs should be happy with their new Compaq.
What exactly was the problem? "defective NVIDIA GPU" is rather vague, was this a "I can't play games at 1080 HD" defect or "WTF my screen is black!" defect?
No screen means I want every dime for my laptop since it was completely unusable, but can't play games at 1080 HD... a $300 Compaq might be sufficient.
One thing's for sure: I've changed my mind about buying a NVIDIA card this year, I'll stick with ATI.
"As for the manufacturing, the big threat to Americans isn't Outsourcing, it's computers & robotics. I know keep bringing this up in my posts, but there is a sleeping bag factory making 2 MILLION bags a year with a total workforce (including salesmen, marketing, accounting and all other non-manufacturing jobs) of JUST 120 people."
Doesn't Uverse also power your TV service? 250GB is almost 10GB a day, that does sound pretty huge, but if I'm surfing and streaming HD to my TV I could see how 10GB a day would be gone pretty fast...

So... you think people should be sitting there stitching together sleeping bags rather than having a automatic sewing machine doing it?
I love this argument, "just cut defense spending!" You do realize we're the World Police, right? All the other countries come to us for help when shit goes down, we keep the entire world in line, without us their would be a constant world war. And do we buy tanks or fighter jets from other countries? No, but the entire world turns to us to buy our jets and tanks.
It's easy to say cut defense when we haven't had a war on our soil in 150 years, and even that was us fighting ourselves. What do you think would happen if we cut our defense to, say, the level of Canada's defense budget? Think we'd be fine? Think other countries wouldn't try something? Who would come to help us when we need it?
"Ok, so this is a slashvertisement for a service that specializes in angel investments, but what was the impact? How many businesses were successfully funded? "
It received $200,000 in June 2010 and was suppose to be a summer project: "We promise to you that Diaspora will be aGPL software which will released at the end of the summer."
"Apple will never unleash mass market versions of their products, Linux has and will."
1999 called, they want their quote back.
Ever heard of the iPod? iPhone? iPad? I think those are all mass market versions. How's the Linux mp3 player doing? Or Linux tablets? Even Android phones are just barely competing with iPhones despite having being offered by every carrier and having dozens of models and being free.
Android loves to say "Look, we're beating the iPhone!" but how hard is that when you pay people to take your product? I could beat Walmart's sales in no time if I was paying people $25 to take a new LCD and underwear.
It's completely true that Android's UI is a blatant attempt at copying iOS. It's also true that the Android fanbois are every bit as irrational and rabid as any other kind,
Prove it.
This is a false-equivalency claim that seldom gets backed up. Apple fandom has reached a fervor that I haven't seen (outside of game console fandom) since the Amiga days, and I don't think that other platforms/vendors have anything near it, either it numbers or kind.
Ok, what kind of proof would convince you that Android fanboism is equal to or greater than Apple fanboism? # of fan websites? # of facebook groups? Online poll? Random telephone survey? How do you prove without a doubt which of two products has a greater number of fanatic fans?
Same. Still running XBMC on old XBOX. Streaming Hulu and Netflix to a 42" plasma using PlayON running on my main PC. Remote is a Logitech Harmony, no signs of anything computer in the living room. With a modern quad or 6-core you won't even notice your PC is transcoding video for PlayON.
American Dad, Family Guy, Hell's Kitchen, Fringe, Glee, Simpsons, Community... it's all there for free on Hulu. Only problem with this setup is it's SD but most shows don't stream in HD anyway and I'm not sure how well modern CPUs could transcode HD video.
I haven't had TV service since 2008 and don't really miss it. $50 for the XBMC XBOX, I don't pay for Hulu, Netflix is ~$7/mo, PlayON was... $20, I think? I could upgrade and get sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, etc), mtv and comedy central but I already have enough. And the Logitech Harmony wasn't bad, it's an older model still using AAAs, think it was $30, so roughly $100 one time and I don't have a monthly cable bill, just $7/mo Netflix for thousands of on demand movies.
Oh another problem is PlayON's business practices are a bit shady. Suppose to be $20 for lifetime years ago, but then they added a few more streaming networks and said "Oh if you want these we need another $50 for Lifetime or pay monthly." WTF? I haven't upgraded because I'm afraid I will then they'll add a few more streaming networks and want another $50.
I will never pay for monthly cable again. The wife likes it, friends like it, and the kids will figure it out when they're old enough.
" It FLEW. It didn't crawl or roll."
Hot air balloons fly too "using no fuel" and I'm sure they could be propelled forward using solar too.
Flight distance from Switzerland to Belgium is only 320 miles (487 km). That's only 26 mph (40 kph). A solar powered car is over twice as fast.
At an average speed of 26 mph this isn't an airplane, it's a glider, as you can see from this extremely slow speed take-off
The $94 million wasted on this would have been better spent on improving solar powered cars rather than a 26mph glider.
Prey sounds all well and good, but who's watching them? How do I know they aren't using this to track where I am?

So another FAIL idea on kickstarter? I am jack's complete lack of surprise.
Just like RC helicopters from the 80s... oh wait... they weren't weaponized
Exactly. RC helicopters have been around since the 80s and I don't remember any assassins using one to kill someone. Sure this has a camera but tiny wireless cameras have been out since the 90s and no RC murders yet.
Half-life 2 had these in 2004. Easy to take down with a crowbar
"But, heavens, what if we - as world policemen - hadn't invaded Iraq?"
Saddam would still be slaughtering people, the middle east would be one huge terrorist training camp, and Bin Laden would still be alive.
Want to save money? Cut welfare so we don't have people who have never worked in 60 years complaining about their free house and their 60-inch HD TV. The US spent $622 billion on the entire Iraq war while welfare costs $888 billion EVERY YEAR
because it keeps Americans safe
Nukes will never work. Soon as someone launches nukes every government on the planet will turn against them and it'll be WWIII. Even if the US launched nukes we'd be wiped off the planet by every other country's nukes.

I think you just have horrible luck with PCs.
"he's conveniently omitting convertibles like the above ThinkPad, which likely make up 90%+ of PC tablet sales."
I wouldn't be so sure, Fujitsu has a large line of popular LifeBook Tablet PCs, and Newegg has a wide variety of tablet pcs available with the most models coming from Panasonic and their $2400-$4000 Toughbook series
Sounds like the people with the $2500 tablet PCs need to file in small claims, and the ones with the cheap PCs should be happy with their new Compaq.

Not just manufacturing either, now baseball players are being replaced by robots

"Here where I live the choices are AT&T DSL, comcast's "xfinity", dial-up, or satellite."
:(
I'm in a similar boat, so really all we have is AT&T and Cable. If those are bad, what is left?
Here's to hoping 4G and WiMAX are as good as they say! But I hear their caps are even worse....
From the looks of it my internet service in 2015 will be slower/worse than my internet in 2001

"Ok, so this is a slashvertisement for a service that specializes in angel investments, but what was the impact? How many businesses were successfully funded? "
Well, let's look at the kickstarter project that has been on slashdot many many many times, Dispora. (8 times in 11 months! Is that a slashvertisement record?)
It received $200,000 in June 2010 and was suppose to be a summer project: "We promise to you that Diaspora will be aGPL software which will released at the end of the summer."
Here it is, 11 months later, and where is it? Diaspora is still not available, you still have to "sign up for an invite".
So forgive me if I'm not impressed by Kickstarter when their biggest project is a EPIC FAIL.
Slashdot, I don't know what Kickstarter is paying you for these ads but please stop

This time? So Skynet was responsible the other times?!?
