As gold and silver are not easilly printed like paper, one cannot simply print another 300000000000.00 in gold bullion bars at their local mint. That would require a few hundred trucks, and the material would be a set weight. On the opposite side, paper has NO intrinsic value... the same ink and paper is used to print 1 dollar bills and 100 dollar bills. The paper isn't worth the numbers on it, and the government acknowledges this by not allowing you to redeem any valuable assets against them, try redeeming gold at face value at Fort Knox sometime, and see if you can buy a bar from them. (You're likely to get shot first, the last time Congressmen tried to inventory Fort Knox assets, they were turned back by Army enforcers, it seems that Fort Knox is off limits to them... strangely since our Constitution states that Congress is in charge of coining and evaluating currency, which shall be made of nothing but gold or silver (according to Article 1 Section 10, I believe)... but hey, nobody reads those silly documents anymore...)

Because you don't need a city-destroyer to set off a nuclear plant, especially one based on plutonium or even 235 or 238 (I'm curious what the projected destruction based on a thorium plant would be).
The mini nuke only needs to breach the reactor wall (or better yet, the fissile materials storage areas, or perhaps even just a truck dropping off fissile materials), and you don't need one that wipes out a city to do that. A nuke with an effective radius of a few blocks could probably be the size of a 1 liter coke bottle at most. This is by current standards (current meaning "available for the last 10 years".
Given the obscene gigaton yields of nukes built anywhere from 10 to 20 years ago, we don't need bigger bombs, but we could easilly reduce them to miniature weapons still capable of great destruction. This is where I believe that an effective trigger bomb (as used in hydrogen bombs as well) doesn't need to be bigger than a coke bottle).
However, given the QUANTITY of fissile material available at a nuke plant, it would be FAR more effective to annihilate a large portion of our continent (and poison it for the forseeable future) by setting off a porta nuke at a power plant based on said fuels. Setting it off in a city creates terror, but does not do what the "terrorists" are really trying to do... that is "attack their enemy". To seriously destroy us the way Rome wiped out Carthage (remember? "salted the lands" namely planted rocks of salt in the fields, preventing ANYTHING from growing for quite a few years (a few centuries)). To do that, the terrorists would need to set off the nuke inside the blast shield/dome and let the ensuing reaction wipe out the area... the extra fissile material going off all at once, would be more than enough to supplant the normally "controlled" fission with an uncontrolled nuclear weapon like explosion of cataclysmic capacity. Do you really think 3 or 4 feet of concrete will stop this from getting out? Do any of you know what happens to an explosion that is "compressed" into a tunnel or box? Have any of you actually DONE the experiments on this fact as I have, or do you just read ".gov" sites as your final authority on explosions? I have never handled a nuke, but I have experimented with miniature explosions (fast burns as we called them in the physics lab in college) and I must say it scared me how violently a small amount of flower in a plastic tube could "explode"... on an open table it was a puff of smoke and a burn, but inside the tube it shot out like a rocket engine. You said the blast dome can take a hit from a 747... but a 747 couldn't wipe out NYC... it took 2 of them to take out the towers. And those were just TWO BUILDINGS. A nuke plant exploding in one uncontrolled fission event would be a lot bigger than the nukes at hiroshima and nagasaki, and those would've wiped out NYC off the map too... a 747 wouldn't have.
(remember the US ran bombing sorties on those towns before we hit them with Fat Man and Little Boy (the names of the nukes, for those of us that don't know our own fucking history, and those bombing raids were more than easilly the equivalent of a LOT of modern airliners crashing into the city, yet it took nukes, and not bombing sorties to annihilate the majority of those cities (and those were barely close to 10 megaton bombs, a "nukular" plant would set off a LOT more fissile material, and if its a plutonium based plant, do the math, a barrel's worth of unfissioned material is enough to make the japan nukes look like firecrackers... just do the math)

Yes, and in 300+ comments, I wonder if anyone's mentioned that a good "hacker" "cracker" whatever you want to call him (security penetrator?) with a good hex editor, handmade if necessary could EASILLY break a system... at least with OpenSource the bugs CAN be found... and oftentimes people stumble upon them when they run a search for kicks (I should know, I found a bug in RedHat 5.2... back when I was in college, using redhat 5.2 and the only reason I found it was because I decided to test the actual software used so I could get some practice using debugger and code/event tracers.) It was awesome watching the drivers take hits in memory as I moved the mouse about, etc. Its a truly liberating experience, probably the same as when someone finally understands our universe... its just a step into a bigger world.
The better question that nobody has asked is this one... would Microsoft submit to this, and release their codebase to public scrutiny? They attack Open Source / Free Software as if we're the devil, but we've put a lot of work and heart into making things clean and clear. True, Linux / Opensource misses a few points that BSD's have traditionally followed more closely (being free to all) but this also allowed a wealth of magnificent code to be completely ripped off by people who then denigrate all forms of non closed source code (Microsoft for one, despite the fact that the entire world bases their TCP/IP stack on that developed by Berkeley, and all of M$'s TCP/IP tools seem based on or completely ripped off from the BSD groups.)

It can suffer both inflation and deflation, and historically anything that can be speculated on can also suffer intentional inflations/deflations (has happened in england several times, happened here when the "great depression" was triggered and also later during the dot com bubble burst.

I was presuming you are american, our government took out about 120% inflation on us (~3.4 trillion federal debt - 8.9 trillion last november when they cancelled the M3 report) when they went to war in Iraq.

You may have made 50k, but if you were american, you would've noticed (well probably not) that the 50k you made has less buying power. Take rising transportation costs, food costs, housing, heating, power. If you think I'm just parrotting Lou Dobbs, I have gas powered heat. I paid nearly 90 dollars in January for heat. I drive for a living, which means I was home roughly 4 weekends and for the rest the heat was off... (except to keep the water heater running so the pipes didn't crack, but that is a minute amount.) I thought I got overcharged and went to talk to my neighbors... they fared even worse!

A house is actually what is known as a "store of value" (or it would be in an economy dictated by solid assets/moneys instead of the fiat inflatable/deflatable paper/credit currency). If you're wondering, it isn't your house "appreciating" it is the fact that the national paper currency is depreciating, and thus the fixed "store of value" is simply reflecting that the little pieces of paper you sell your life for, are worth less and less each year.
Have you ever wondered why there was never inflation in economies based on Gold and Silver? Because the supply is controlled by nature. As gold and silver are not easilly printed like paper, one cannot simply print another 300000000000.00 in gold bullion bars at their local mint. That would require a few hundred trucks, and the material would be a set weight. On the opposite side, paper has NO intrinsic value... the same ink and paper is used to print 1 dollar bills and 100 dollar bills. The paper isn't worth the numbers on it, and the government acknowledges this by not allowing you to redeem any valuable assets against them, try redeeming gold at face value at Fort Knox sometime, and see if you can buy a bar from them. (You're likely to get shot first, the last time Congressmen tried to inventory Fort Knox assets, they were turned back by Army enforcers, it seems that Fort Knox is off limits to them... strangely since our Constitution states that Congress is in charge of coining and evaluating currency, which shall be made of nothing but gold or silver (according to Article 1 Section 10, I believe)... but hey, nobody reads those silly documents anymore...)

Lets say you sell your house, at 180k, you had bought it at 100k, and you paid it all off so you get what you sell it at. Now, according to the no longer published figures, to retain its buying value, the house should sell at 220k... (100k +120%), however selling at 180k, while your house "appreciated" it didn't beat inflation. Yep, you LOST money. But what do I know, you got more paper, right?? that makes you... uhhh... rich?...

PS - if you think I'm a conspiracy theorist, I'll draw to attention my great grandparents, who died when the communists took power in the eastern block. They too thought those who hated communists were merely "conspiracy theorists", strangely, those "conspiracy theories" killed them off relatively quickly, after plundering EVERYTHING they had labored to build and earn. Because you don't need a city-destroyer to set off a nuclear plant, especially one based on plutonium or even 235 or 238 (I'm curious what the projected destruction based on a thorium plant would be).
The mini nuke only needs to breach the reactor wall (or better yet, the fissile materials storage areas, or perhaps even just a truck dropping off fissile materials), and you don't need one that wipes out a city to do that. A nuke with an effective radius of a few blocks could probably be the size of a 1 liter coke bottle at most. This is by current standards (current meaning "available for the last 10 years".
Given the obscene gigaton yields of nukes built anywhere from 10 to 20 years ago, we don't need bigger bombs, but we could easilly reduce them to miniature weapons still capable of great destruction. This is where I believe that an effective trigger bomb (as used in hydrogen bombs as well) doesn't need to be bigger than a coke bottle).
However, given the QUANTITY of fissile material available at a nuke plant, it would be FAR more effective to annihilate a large portion of our continent (and poison it for the forseeable future) by setting off a porta nuke at a power plant based on said fuels. Setting it off in a city creates terror, but does not do what the "terrorists" are really trying to do... that is "attack their enemy". To seriously destroy us the way Rome wiped out Carthage (remember? "salted the lands" namely planted rocks of salt in the fields, preventing ANYTHING from growing for quite a few years (a few centuries)). To do that, the terrorists would need to set off the nuke inside the blast shield/dome and let the ensuing reaction wipe out the area... the extra fissile material going off all at once, would be more than enough to supplant the normally "controlled" fission with an uncontrolled nuclear weapon like explosion of cataclysmic capacity. Do you really think 3 or 4 feet of concrete will stop this from getting out? Do any of you know what happens to an explosion that is "compressed" into a tunnel or box? Have any of you actually DONE the experiments on this fact as I have, or do you just read ".gov" sites as your final authority on explosions? I have never handled a nuke, but I have experimented with miniature explosions (fast burns as we called them in the physics lab in college) and I must say it scared me how violently a small amount of flower in a plastic tube could "explode"... on an open table it was a puff of smoke and a burn, but inside the tube it shot out like a rocket engine. You said the blast dome can take a hit from a 747... but a 747 couldn't wipe out NYC... it took 2 of them to take out the towers. And those were just TWO BUILDINGS. A nuke plant exploding in one uncontrolled fission event would be a lot bigger than the nukes at hiroshima and nagasaki, and those would've wiped out NYC off the map too... a 747 wouldn't have.
(remember the US ran bombing sorties on those towns before we hit them with Fat Man and Little Boy (the names of the nukes, for those of us that don't know our own fucking history, and those bombing raids were more than easilly the equivalent of a LOT of modern airliners crashing into the city, yet it took nukes, and not bombing sorties to annihilate the majority of those cities (and those were barely close to 10 megaton bombs, a "nukular" plant would set off a LOT more fissile material, and if its a plutonium based plant, do the math, a barrel's worth of unfissioned material is enough to make the japan nukes look like firecrackers... just do the math)
