Actually you are mistaken. I worked for a state government in VA, for the educational branch. I hate to dissapoint you (actually it is my pleasure but the political bullshit must be obeyed).

The IT department there was quite enlightened, sadly the site managements were all in varied degree of ignorance and it was THEY, not the IT director that made the first AND final decisions regarding to IT. Hell they even had priviledge to cut you off in the middle of a budget opinion meeting to demand you return to the site to reboot a server. Then they bitched that their computer related budget got cut again... well DUH!

So whether the REAL IT crew is brilliant or stupid... getting to work with a brilliant site manager or having their rights to screw your priorities rescinded, you CANNOT win, site managers only care about being as cheap as possible and cutting every corner. When that is done... things fail, supplies are in short demand, and YOU get the bad review for "not solving all the problems adequately."

    Period.

Maybe you live in the one cubicle world where the ignorant pricks don't rule absolute... but if you have ANY government work... be prepared to SUFFER if you are managed by suits or uniforms. They only care about the bottom line and well they should.

    First off...

***** Read this disclaimer (I do NOT condone terrorism and I'll be the first sniper to sign onto my local SWAT squad if terrorists take hostages here... I don't believe in killing without a very good reason... and not just suspicion but a VERY good reason (self defense? defense of others lives?) and hostage taking, period).******

    Now... about my earlier post.
Don't take it as a religious attack because its not. After flying from religion to religion and finding many of their followers just as hypocritical as the next "turn the other cheek" liars. I am most likely to hold to the values passed on by Buddhism for the sole reason that it is roughly the only worldwide "religion" that doesn't advocate mass slaughter of "unbelievers". Christianity and Islam have both done that... and Judaism(and "god's chosen (and very militant) people" isn't proving any different with their own war of aggression right now.)
Plus the native americans have been here for many "moons" MORE than your people were in the middle east, and we STILL massacred them, took their livelyhood away and destroyed a human/ecological balance that had lasted for over a thousand years (who knows exactly how long)! So take it easy...
Those people in Palestine are turning to terrorism because they have no other method of retaliation. I doubt very much a guy with an AK and shit training will match up the professional soldiers, airborne strikes, the tanks and tactical nukes parked in Israel. But with a bomb strapped to his chest at least he'll feel like he died in holy fire taking a few of yours with him instead of dying in a futile attempt using a peashooter against an armoured army that even Satan would fear. There's more nukes in Israel than the rest of the middle east. How do you think those people feel on the other end of your guns? Happy? I doubt it. Put yourselves in their shoes... see how happy you'd be to know that a bunch of foreigners have landed and want the land because their holy book demands it. You'd be equally suspicious and hostile, especially if the land your hut is on gets sold out from under your sandalled feet.
    Secondly...
If you claim religious goodness, do recall that ALL armies of Judaism, Christianity, and ISLAM have ALL gone with GOD!! when they went to massacre others (3 crusades, 1 children's crusade, many jihads, etc). So did their enemies. One question begs to be asked... has anyone received a "go ahead" from God yet? And if so, what part of "thou shalt not kill" did they ammend, I mean hell that was one of the original TEN commandments!! Perhaps we worship the wrong deity... or perhaps we're turning a blind eye to our OWN hypocrisy! But then again... the most "fervent" believers and outspoken advocates of christian, judaic, or islamic goodness are the filthy rich, who have stolen, lied and more than possibly cost others their lives to get there. And us everyday Joes suck it up like so much shit in our food trough.
So get off your high horse and see the steaming bullshit for what it is. But you most likely won't because as they say... "ignorance is bliss".

If the arabs nuke and annihilate the jews, I have no comment to make except (at least they prevented life on a reservation!) which IS what will await them IF they are allowed to survive by Sharon and the ultra heavilly armed freaks during their power grab. No shit they're scared, other than US in the US, nobody gives a shit about their little bought and paid for country, especially since all they've done is foster instability in the region. THE ONLY thing that will stop further wars in that region is simple. Eliminate the need for oil. That's what prevented the further evolution of arabic nations. Don't forget that during the crusades they were centuries ahead of us in medicine, art, and sciences. Us good ole western white people managed to get our claws into them and cause them to become inert via the greed of their sheiks. Yay. Pay'em oil and oil dividends to the people. Blam you've got complacent lazy people living off oil money, with plenty of time to spare to get not only pissed off at our military presence there, but also to have enough time to BUILD terrorism in a nationwide enterprise for their people... The only things missing are Osama Bomb U Bad Inc. stock shares on wall street. Eliminate the oil need altogether (without being bought out by bush or his oil cronies) and you're set for life as is the rest of the world. Who knows, without oil money, the arabic nations may have to switch to educating their people again. Wouldn't that be magic. -Daedalus

You seem to think English is the end all language of all things. Honestly, that's what others thought of Latin and yet look at how many languages outlived it!! Don't bother counting, the list is huge.

Do your homework... storing these languages will be a way for some with some interest to research how and possibly WHAT factors influenced the language development of various groups through history. For example, Latin may be dead, but it influenced many languages, and in some cases you could trace invasions via accents borrowed from Latin. (Romania is in the middle of the slavic/gallic area yet their language is based on Latin, quite significantly at that.Hungaria is right west of Romania and they speek a completely different language than all those around them (Huns settled there.) All in all at least some study will at least keep track of where we are coming from.)

It is almost like taking family pictures or writing a family tree, only this time with languages. It may not seem like much to the consumerist point of view prevalent now, especially among those of us here in the USA that have NOT been outside the country...

Destroy variety and you'll be left eating hot dogs for the rest of your life. They're not bad, but if it was all you had you'd soon understand why many seek the unusual and the break from the status quo. Preserving some cultures or parts of cultures other than our own might even count as being civilized. (remember our ancestors commiting genocide of entire peoples when they landed here? you should. it is our heritage and forgetting it will let those in power commit those crimes again)

Plus our studies of evolution have barely begun... we need to record some things that aren't fossilized such as art and language. Even if just to leave to future civilizations digging out our leftovers from the ashes of our own stupidity. (ala A.I.)

Thanks guys, I will try to do what I can... as I've said its little, but in view of how the corporate world is now buying both our government and our lives, someone needs to start somewhere or we all WILL end up living in pods with serial numbers before long.

Having a say in the way things run is what the artists ALSO gave up just like small startups hoping that wallstreet cash would save them... it sank them instead. The people that played at the original Woodstock did not drive around in million dollar latest trend of tour buses. The purpose of that act was exactly what music no longer is... free.

Curious: If I paid 99 cents to an artist or even 59 cents for a song I really liked... hell I'd tip 'em... and i'm sure I'm not alone. And this kind of system would most likely work better than the MPAA demanding 19.99 for a cd of 8 or 10 songs of which maybe TWO are even remotely memorable... That is not business... its extortion. We need to offer an option. I wanted to buy a grand am, and they told me no manuals available. I told them, fine, watch me buy a ford... and I did. I had a choice. That's what music shoppers need. Those who want to pay the extortive prices for the wrong featureset can do so, the rest might welcome the idea.

Okay so I'll give some details and ask a question or two for you slashdotters. (I finally made an account too, needed to post instead of just reading).

GIVENS: I am trying to finish some side projects for my own company, but on the side I wanted to create a site where artists can freely distribute songs they want heard and take contributions. I will do it for fun so it may not necessarily be the biggest thing around since my server capacity sucks right now (just a couple of old celerons and an athlon 1000 former gaming rig lying around and a cable connection (soon to be a full server, via @home/@work, if i can blow the cash on it).

QUESTION: What I wanted to know is... if I build it and moderate it and take care of it... does anyone think it might work? Might it give the fearful artists (i.e. the ones who'd do it if someone would help them) enough gall to stand up to the bastards in power (tm) (i.e. RIAA, MPAA, whoever) and go it on their own with the help of a few of us dedicated individuals on the net? Do you think that as long as we keep corporate interests out and maintain it as a free group, it would work? GNU/BSD style? Might it become a WE thing instead of a 'me myself and I team'?

ELSE: Should we all just sit back like cowards and watch the world spin out of our reach?
The world is being ripped out of our grasp as are our rights. If we want any freedom when this administration is done catering to the filthy rich and stepping on the soon to be festering corpses of our rights and freedoms (for which my parents risked death to come to the US from the old soviet block) I daresay we need to start ACTING not just debating. I'm neither an activist nor a fool, but I am concerned that if nobody proposes, or tries, nothing will get done. Just as nothing got done when the elections were doctored a scant few years back. When I was growing up, we didn't have the right to act, at least here we do. So I'm going to try to do my part. This is the clear, non violent way to do something right. Marches and petitions work but they stand a great chance of failure (the politicians and lawyers have to compare popular support versus large payoffs from filthy rich corporations which the public inadvertedly supports). Providing alternatives to the providers instead of attempting to persuade the deaf and rich overlords that enslave those providers may work.

AND: If necessary we could charge a small percentage for site maintenance and time spent, but either way not stealing over 90% of the artists proceeds for our own greed. I say if we want to kill the RIAA and MPAA and their GREED we need to MAKE a different outlet for artists up and coming.

We've got the technology, and between just the slashdotters I'd say we got more than enough skill to make it happen. We just need the motivation.
