I work on the mono project and so I happen to know all about patents... They are no big deal - if someone puts a patent in my face I just laugh and code around it - its simple really like the song from the lion king says: 'no worries' http://www.go-mono.com/faq.html#patents ;^)

Mono is already fully EMCA standards compliant and has been for some time.
