Uhh. AIUI Americans speak the way they do because a lot of the original settlers came from areas of Britain which had (and still have!) accents which sometimes sound more American than English.

Or so Bill Bryson says, anyway (which is about as much linguistics as I'm prepared to read, since it's funny too :)

why don't you wait for him to come along?

  4. Burger King Fries on Burger King to offer Internet Access · · Score: 1

Anyone else think the new fries kinda suck?

Yeah, they've put some sort of potato puree over them, cooked them for longer and generally made them taste absolutely vile.

BK Whopper+Cheese is the best burger in existence, but I won't eat in BK any more because of these horrible King Fries

    Just my 0.02e worth...

Incidentally, anyone know why superscript isn't in the Allowed HTML on /.?

  5. 10%?? More like 1%! on MP3.COM signing A. Morissette, T. Amos · · Score: 1

If only it were 10%. Your average CD costs around 13 pence (around 20c?) to produce. Most albums over here cost around 100 times that.

Add to that the fact that most artists get around 1UKP ($1.57?) per album sold and... I wonder where all the money goes.... :(

  6. AOL Syndrome on Ask Slashdot: Perceptions of Red Hat Software · · Score: 1

I had written a long comment about how Redhat failed to work properly with half the X programs it installed, but actually I don't really think that's the problem.

Mainly I think that Redhat's problem is that it dumbs down linux, which is an anathema (sp?) to most of the old linux users.

It's a bit like AOL. Before redhat, people would ask on the comp.os.linux What's the best distribution and you'd get loads of responses from the various groups, all of which were sensible and open-minded. However now you just get r3DH@t r00L2! slackware 5UKz...

All of a sudden you have the linux community fighting within itself -- and RedHat is one of the main culprits for this.

Of course we have a lot to thank RedHat for -- their corporate image of Linux has brought us massive amounts of vendor support -- but IMHO it is the AOL syndrome that upsets most people

  7. StrongARM & Intel on AOL Considers Linux? · · Score: 1

Slightly more complex than this - Digital and ARM developed the StrongARM as a joint venture, which meant they both had quite a stake in it (don't ask me for figures ;()

Intel bought the semiconductor arm of Digital (including the Alpha and StrongARM)... "do the math", as our American cousins tend to say ;-)

  8. Humm... Wonder if WINE could benifit... on Open Source Windows · · Score: 1

One of the main advantages of open-source is the fact that they can't sue "the wine developers". Who on earth would they sue?

If I start developing for wine, and I get sued, someone else will start developing.

If MS put a suit on redhat/slackware/debian to stop the distribution, it will go to other ftp sites.

And AIUI most of the wine developers aren't in the US. I'd be interested to see the US Justice Dept getting an extradition warrant for MS :)

Of course what the wine group could do is claim that MS looked at wine's source first.......
