I agree, God and science are two separate things. There are some things that science can never explain; the things that are beyond the scope of science are the domain of faith. Science will never tell us how reality came to be, or if has always been here, why? Things that are unknowable are either ignored, or taken as, you guessed it, matters of faith.
Slightly O.T. But as far as I.D. goes, I can't think of a more absurd thing to argue about... If there is a "God", and he insists on designing things, then he could have created the earth, everyone in it and their memories 10 minutes ago, being omnipotent and all. Doesn't seem really important...
Try as I might, I can't seem to figure out why this post is flamebait. Grating maybe, but flamebait no. Just a different opinion, and sufficiently reasoned. I've seen a bunch of stories just like this one, and they just seem pointless to me. I thought maybe someone else would agree.
To me this just seems like non news. All new copies of windows come with sp2 integrated... What else is MS supposed to do? So they made a less than secure OS a while ago, that can't be changed. They offer SP2 on cd for free AFAIK, so if you have an old copy of XP, you can patch it up before connecting to the net. Microsoft doesn't want you running windows unpatched, and they'll help you patch it...
I think this is somewhat akin to complaining about a product after a company has had it recalled. This problem is annoying, but hardly news, and certainly not a valid comparison of the relative security of different OS's
The problem with the "getting away from the big evil publishers" thing, is that it didn't exactly work as expected for me. I was hoping (maybe foolishly) that the cutting out of the publisher would lower prices. I have seen a few quotes on the net that put Gabe Newell talking about how valve gets 30 dollars per game sold on steam as opposed to 11 dollars for a copy sold in store. So what does valve do? They keep prices exactly the same (*more* expensive for me in canada).
On top of this, they go to excessive lengths to combat "piracy", shitcanning 20000 accounts, a good number of which have already given them money. I know that valve is doing pretty well for themselves, and they likely would be if there was no copy protection on the game at all, let alone some overzelous "phone home" system. To me they seem like just another greedy company.
I was going to buy HL2 in spite of steam, but considering their recent actions, I think I'll be happier without.
AFAIK there are pirate versions of the game that don't require that steam be installed. How did 20000 people manage to find a pirate version that ties you to a steam account? My feeling is that there are a pretty large number of people who *bought* the game, used a nocd, and got banned.
I saw this and thought: Aren't there enough bad jokes on slashdot already? Do the editors go out of their way to put these stories up? I can't think of a single thing to say that doesn't involve some bad pun or reference to flatulence... and I'm sure I'm not alone.
Progressive governments give their citizens more rights and information. This is the opposite; Democrat or Republican is not really the issue here... Its kind of a scary policy regardless of who put it in place.
I guess you could just have a recharger with an internal lead-acid battery that sits plugged in all the time. That would be reasonably convenient (weight aside), and would get rid of the problems with high currents while charging.

While we're on the subject of taboos, I'd like to point out that a dictatorship and a democracy are both equally capable of commiting attrocities, and that there is no inherent reason that a democracy should be held above some other form of government. If you're going to judge, do it based on a countries actions and its treatment of its own citizens. (admitedly, Iraq didn't hold up very well under these metrics, but thats not a sole result of it being a dictatorship)
Agreed. Coincidence that the one windows laptop without a Quadro was >1000 cheaper than the others? Probably not.
