The UK has effectively banned gun ownership, and yet has a higher murder rate than the US. Criminals now see the UK populace as unarmed sheep to be preyed upon at will.
Try upgrading to Windows 7 and using Windows Advanced Firewall instead of a 12-year-old product ?:)
I haven't used Windows on a day-to-day base since 6-7 years, so I was pretty surprised to learn that as of two years ago, Windows XP was sold pre-installed on systems like the ASUS Eee Box. These are little Intel Atom-driven machines as small as a lunch box. Due to their limited CPU power, they came with Windows XP.
You generally do not update such small boxes to a big OS like Windows 7, it will probably run dog-slow while the preinstall is working pretty smoothly. So I agree with your general sentiment, but upgrading is not for everyone.
At work I have all the Linux and Solaris boxes I want, plus an XP box to read email on
Are you stuck on Outlook or something? I'm in the same position as you are, with a Linux box and OS X laptop, but I am really glad I don't have a Windows machine nearby.
The summary is spot on. I haven't been a Windows user for a number of years, but a friend asked me to fix her malware problem and I reinstalled her Windows XP box. For the firewall, I remembered ZoneAlarm from a few years ago and installed it. After the first reboot, some stupid popup appeared, prompting me to "like" the software on Facebook. I'm like WTF? But still gave them the benefit of the doubt. Next reboot it comes up with the totally bogus popup that I may get infected with Zeus. I had to reread it twice to find out it really was an advertisement.
I downloaded Comodo, unplugged the network, uninstalled ZoneAlarm, installed Comodo and plugged back into the inter webs. Never looked back.
I probably will not buy any Check Point software for my business either.
I've been meaning to build a laptop platform for my treadmill for ages now... this is the weekend I'm getting it done.
Perhaps it's an idea to get an iPad. You can keep it in one hand, it might save you from rigging an extensive laptop platform. It might get heavy, though, so perhaps get a cheap desktop stand which might still be less work than building a laptop platform.
That does seem a bit strange to me unless you do not allow any external access like VPN, and the building is physically secured. If not, is the company data worth anything anyway?
It just amazes me how much we are willing to give away everything that is related to our privacy.
I bet you were just fishing for karma -- "zOMG big brother!!1!" always works here. But really, it's not a big deal. Being in a public place isn't really private. Private stuff I consider things like the small love note I write for my wife, the advice on relationships I ask my dad, the girl I talked to when my wife was away with friends, etc. Not the small stuff, like the bar I hang out.
Wow, the Linksys WRT-54G series is in there as well. That makes for a HUGE amount of routers, because this baby is still going strong after eight years, even if it's not the complete WRT-54G series that's vulnerable.
3. Use the "private browsing" mode in browsers that provide them
I'm holding out until someone creates a FireFox extension that makes a sound when Private Browsing is started. I'm thinking something along the lines of a robot voice loudly screaming PORN MODE ACTIVATED.
The problem is the only real way to learn it is through experience, but, if you don't know what you need to practice
That's when a therapist comes in, in my opinion. People have a huge barrier to go to a therapist, when it used to be that role was fulfilled by the church, or your grandfather, or what have you. Really a shame. But a good therapist will give you exercises to work on.
I like the story about the 'reformed' bully. Kind of touching how he apologized so deeply.
Hehheh I haven't played D&D for year now, but it looks an awful lot like it:-) it's really funny, now I think of it. The only way to raise emotion, intelligence or wisdom, is to try and exercise it in some way. For instance, you can exercise emotion by making decisions that make you and others feel good (on the long term). You raise intelligence by applying education. You raise wisdom by making decisions based on emotion and intelligence.
He was always telling me that I need to develop some "self-confidence". Easy for him to say.
Actually, building self-confidence is well documented. Really, thoroughly, well-documented. Talk to any, even the most cheap therapist and he'll raise your self-confidence in one session. If you don't like that, check out cheap on-line material such as Dr. Paul Dobransky provides.
It's just a bunch of equations and you're an idiot if you cannot understand them. Here they are: Fulfillment = happiness (from emotion) + success (from intelligence) + freedom (from wisdom) Self-confidence = fulfillment% Power = adult boundaries + positive energy (self-esteem)
Just raise any of the terms to increase the outcome.
And besides that, it looks like the stuff is not dyed. Without color, I really couldn't call this clothing -- at least not in the modern sense of clothing.
I think not many people realize that an iPad is tethered to some sort of PC/laptop which runs iTunes. It looks like it will replace the desktop/laptop for a lot of things. But since you have to sync it for music, movies and updates, it becomes an additional expense -- BESIDES the desktop/laptop. Not only an expense, but it's an additional desktop/laptop to maintain as well. Maintenance costs time.
Apple wants to have your money. And you're going to pay it.
At a recent speech, Steve Jobs quotes Nielsen US smartphone market share numbers. RIM 35%, iPhone 28%, Windows Mobile 19%, Android 9%.
Now there are good and not-so-good market researchers, but Nielsen is considered pretty prestigious. And 19% market share for Windows Mobile is a lot bigger than 9%.
He's not saying he has problems once the tabs are open. He's saying that when he starts Firefox, the browser opens the tabs from the previous start. And that takes a good 10-15 seconds, while the whole UI is unresponsive. That has been my observation as well.

iOS 4 Releases Today
·
· Score: 1
You might want to think twice about installing iOS4 on your iPhone 3G. It's not the fastest device anymore. One gentleman seems to have installed the development version on his 3G and says "not worth it": http://www.macgasm.net/2010/06/17/week-ios4-3g-phone-worth/
The summary is basically that it's a lot slower than 3.1.3.
I'm definitely going to wait a week or two and see what the results are.
The mundanes love all the non-lingual communication with body language, and seeing people smile and stuff. I don't really understand it, but it is very common.
I don't claim understand it either, but one thing is certain: it's pretty damn important and I feel it cannot be dismissed. Here's a quote from Wikipedia on nonverbal communication:
Argyle, using video tapes shown to the subjects, analysed the communication of submissive/dominant attitude and found that non-verbal cues had 4.3 times the effect of verbal cues.
Have you ever tried to seduce a woman? I have, and I found out that it doesn't really matter what I say. The content itself is much less important, it's more how you say it (with a bit of swagger, some humor, and some wise cracking).
Day care not good for kids? What is the alternative?
Having your mommy around doesn't make you a healthy young man. Having your mom around for 100% of the time, will cause you to be a 'nice boy'. Which is the last thing most women want. Instead, you need both your mom AND your dad to make you an all-round individual.
I'd suggest parents work four days each, and make sure they both have plenty of time for the kids. But that is not going to happen in the near future. It's definitely what I'm planning for my future family.

I'm calling troll here. Sources, please?
Wikipedia article on homicides per country notes 5.7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants for the US, and 1.45 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants for England.

Notice how the Time magazine cover sporting the nose-less girl went virtually unnoticed on the left?
I didn't know about this cover so for other reader's interest, here's a link:

You mean the new Mac Minis they released last week?
Have you seen the price of the new Mac Minis? I am surprised they dare call it Mac Mini anymore. A raise from $500 to $700 is a 40% price increase.

I have an M.S. in predictive analytics, and I'm only months away from my Ph.D.
Knowing some Ph.D.'s, that's a pretty bold prediction :D
