News for you buddy: they already are.
How else is it possible that AOL managed to become AOL:TW?
And they certainly didn't make it to the top by being 'easy to use' and reliable. They made it to the top by spamming people with CDs. In fact, their buisness model is a lot like merging Microsoft's strategy with a spammers:
"Hmmm. Our product sucks and our sales are dropping.... Release a "new version" with pretty colors, but don't actually let people connect at better speeds. Also, rename features that others have implemented years ago, and call them "innovative." Don't forget to make the whole mess propriatary and incompatible, so they can never uninstall it. Then put free CDs out in all public places, mail them to everyone with an address, and advertise on every tv station in the world. SOMEBODY will sign up."
I don't see why some of you are so adamant about this technology being "useless". The most popular argument seems to be that one should just buy a dvd burner instead of cramming more data on a CD-R.
The last time I checked, it's still over $0.50 per DVD disc (including rebates), while I obtain almost all my CD-R's for free. Right now, I have 300+ blank CD-R's sitting around that I won't use anytime soon, all compliments of Staples/Office Max/Circuit City. I'd rather use that extra couple hundred meg per CD than spend more money on new blank disks. (Plus, for a GOOD DVD burner, it's still in the $200 range)
Don't know about you, but most of the data I back up is for MY computer, so I don't give a damn if nobody else can read it. Worst case, I'll copy the data to my HD, then send it over the network to the other comp.
And for the record I'm delighted at the fact that a company is focusing on other potential improvements to their CD-RW drives than being able to burn a disc a couple of seconds faster than their previous models. Right now, I only have a 16X burner, and most of the time, it's plenty fast for me.
Of all the topics on Slashdot, anime seems to get the worst rap. The most common diss is that it's a "crappy cartoon". This is as unreasonable as saying "Windows is a stable OS"
Anime is more than just a crappy cartoon. You want a crappy cartoon, watch the disney channel sometime in the afternoon. Yes, some anime is bad, in fact, a lot of it is. Come to think of it, there are lots of crappy TV shows (reality tv anyone?) and crappy movies (fast and furious anyone?). With any genre, there comes the good and the bad.
One of the best anime review sites on the web If you take a look at rankings of most anime shown on american tv (cartoon network, most notably), you will notice that MOST of them are only in the 50 - 80 % range. The anime shown during the "adult swim" of cartoon network have a much higher average. I'll bet most of you anime dissers are judging the whole of a genre based on the anime with the lowest averages **cough**Dragonball Z**cough**.
It'd be like me saying that all sci-fi movies are as bad as "This Island Earth".(Neglecting the fact that it is SO bad that it's funny)
Broaden your spectrum, all ye naysayers. Either that, or stop posting under the anime topics. You're ruining it for those of us with an appreciation for the art.
(And I would request the channel, but I'm stuck on DirecTV)
(Yes, I would rather have subs. But dubs will do till they realize that I'd pay more for subs)
Make sure you use USED dryer sheets, or you'll find you're PC components covered in a weird film.
Another plue is that it keeps your PC smelling fresh.
As an out-of-state college student, it requires significantly more effort to vote than if I was close to home. While E-voting won't cure voter apathy, it'll certainly help.
Yes, I am a lazy bum and don't feel like filling out an absentee ballot. I've got other issues to deal with. (Engineering at VT anyone?)
anime will NEVER become mainstream. As much as I would love to see it happen, I KNOW that the american culture is too pompous and ignorant to let it happen.
People have become way too dependent on what critics say about a movie. They go watch what other people tell them they should, possibly because it costs way to much to see a movie. Critics who diss the movie for poor animation and "Speed Racer" style action obviously never went to see the movie, and instead opted to read some online summary and diss what they do not understand.
So ignore (the vast majority of) the critics, and go see what is a GREAT action movie that actually has a plot.

I often discuss political affairs with my friends and family, read the news, read the commentary, and mock the communists.
This just proves that just because you're lazy doesn't mean you're uninformed.
