Want Anime Network on Your Cable System?

ccnull writes "The Anime Network has launched a "tell your cable company to carry this station!" campaign on its web site. Just enter your ZIP code at the top of the site's home page (it looks like a banner ad) and you'll be that much closer to Samurai X 24/7. In case you hadn't heard, the network launched in late 2002." No support via DirecTV. I filled out the form already- I crave this channel.

It is an unfortunate fact about fandom, whether it be gaming fandom, anime fandom, or Linux fandom that it goes through stages:

      1. Stage One: A small group of people discover something that they like and think is fun and interesting. They form clubs based on it, talk to each other about references from it and generally enjoy themselves. Often, they will be persecuted by people who don't get it, "You're into that?!? How can you be into that?!?!" they'll sneer as they pass you in the street, at school or at work. This is also the evangelism phase, you try to convince people to become involved in the thing you are into. "The more the merrier" is what you think at this stage. In some ways, this is the best stage of fandom. There is a lot you have to do by yourself and normally a dearth of commercial support, but it is exciting.

      2. Stage Two: Some charismatic people become interested in what you like, unfortunately, leading the people who were sneering at you to think, "Oh! He's into that? Oh, maybe I misjudged it then..." (You'll see why this is unfortunate soon enough.) More support becomes available, so you don't have to do everything yourself. Instead of third generation fan-subs, for instance, commercial tapes become available. Maybe not the ones you want, but still, maybe good in their own way.

      3. Stage Three: This is the transitional phase, your hobby becomes well known enough that the mainstream media picks up on it, usually portraying it as a weird and evil sub-culture. Of course, this causes it to appeal to bored mainstreamers who want to appear cool by taking on the establishment (until they grow up to become corporate lawyers and/or investment bankers, natch.) These are the people who start showing up at your AD&D club meetings and when you suggest a game of Call of Cthuhlu for a change, mock you. They don't mock you because they know anything about CoC , but because "the name sounds goofy, man." You start feeling resentful as they try feeding your sixth level magic user to a gelatinous cube, and in my case you stop attending group meetings.

      4. Stage Four: Congressmen start talking about the evils of the whatever-it-is that you like, of course making it more cool among mainstreamers . Although the thing you like is more readily available now from a variety of commercial sources, it has been rendered palatable for the mainstreamers . All the rough edges are sanded off, and you get accosted by people who don't know that you used to be really into the thing who try to tell you how cool their bland, pallid version of the thing you used to love is. The barbarians are at the gate! People are overunning your hobby with the same predjudices they had back when it wasn't cool. They accost you at conventions and say, "You are into that!?! How could you be into that?!? This new is so much cooler than that. I wouldn't be caught dead being into that." Note: As always, you are not trying to force your tastes on anyone. In fact, because the quality of people you are meeting has declined so much, you try to identify the bad ones and just "smile and nod" as they pass you by. You are just trying to "live and let live," but the mainstreamers only want to appear rebellious, even though by their very nature they are conformists. Because of this, they will seek you out and try to force conformity on you, basically forcing you to hide your interests within a hobby from them the same way you used to hide your interest in the hobby from them.

Anime *is* originated in the US. It's called cartoons.

But honestly. Anime isn't cool because it's not from the US, it's cool because it's cool.

      - Although anime usually has less animation than US cartoons, the animation is much, much higher quality. Quality over quantity.
This is usually only true for TV series (the animators have to produce 1 episode per week). OAVs and movies contain much more (and smoother) animations. Exceptions: Rurouni Kenshin (TV series has beautiful and smooth animation), Full Metal Panic (perfect integration of 3D graphics and hand-drawn animation, unlike *cough* Marvel).

      - Most of the voice actors (and actresses! especially the actresses!) are extremely talented. Much, much more than most US voice actors. You can actually hear emotions in their voices. And the female voices usually sound beautiful. Most of the voices suite the personality of the character very well. I've never seen any dub with voices that's as good as it's sub counterpart.

      - The story, plot and dialog. Most of the anime that are targeted for older audiences (no, not pr0n!) have a very good story and plot, much more than US cartoons. And instead of pumping everything into your head like Marvel or Disney does, some of them actuall make you think and let you decide what happened (NGE, Wolf's Rain, etc.).

Of course there are exceptions but generally speaking, the above poitns are correct.

Also keep in mind that I'm talking about modern anime, not 15 year old shows like DBZ! Honestly, go download some modern fansubs and behold the pure quality the animation, voices and story.

TechTV Canada's issue with airing anime is it goes against their Canadian license, they simply are not allowed to air that type of programming, same for all the other drama and non-tech type stuff the US parent now airs. In essence TechTV Canada cannot air anime as it would compete with TeleToon, Canada's lame answer to Cartoon Network.

Canadian TV licensing is silly at best as it attempts to enforce "cultural" identity in a country that is very multi-cultural making it very hard to pull off, plus the Canadian broadcasters go out of their way to simply buy up US programming during primetime just so they can block the incoming US network feeds of said programming.

Add to that the built in license protection that blocks stations from actually improving themselves to gain viewers since they are tied to their original format with little leeway to adjust in case ratings tank. So you end up with a pretty mediocre broadcasting system with terrible homegrown content that's just there to fulfill various quotas.

Take Discovery Canada, during primetime it's 75% Canadian content, which means that the good stuff from the US parent channel is usually airing early afternoon or at 2am or something, while during primtetime you're stuck with drivel mostly.

Animation is much cheaper than paying high cost professional actors and creating stunning special effects. You can do anything in animation with the right artists and it is cheaper. Japanese studios are small and poor, anime allows them to make gems like Princess Mononoke that couldn't happen otherwise. Anime shouldn't be viewed as genre, but simply a part of foreign television. Dubs sound better to most English speakers, simply because you hear more nuance of the voice when you can understand the words. The inflection makes a huge difference. Reading the subtitles let's you know what's going on, but hearing the voice lets you know how it's going on as well. And the vast majority of the people cannot hear nuance without understanding the language. I can't.

      >I just honestly don't "get" anime.

Well, let me try to explain a little. Here are some things you have to accept in order to like anime.

      1.) Cute is good.

A lot of men can't get past this... that even if you are male, it's ok to like something that is cute. And cute is everywhere in anime, even the most hardcore anime has something cute in it. It might not be "Hello Kitty" cute, but it will be there.

2.) Cute does not necessarily mean "for kids". Cute can be sexy.

3.) Comedy and drama can coexist without diminishing each other.

An otherwise serious anime (or manga) may have bits where the art style devolves to a sketchy style to make a funny point or tell a joke. It's ok! Your serious story is not any less interesting because there was a funny bit with hyper cute characters in it. It's actually better for the extra characterization.

4.) Anime is a stylized, posed, low-framerate medium. These are it's STRENGTHS!

Some people who like animation don't like anime because it is often lower framerate than what they are used to seeing. I would argue that, not only are the quality of drawings and shading in each cel of anime usually superior to a standard (post 40's) cartoon, but that they actually make the low framerate work in ways a higher rate could not.

Anime is nothing if not a highly stylized medium. The characters are often posed in ways that telegraph their emotion. Often backgrounds are reduced to abstract representations to symbolize the emotional action that is taking place. They have actually found commercial use for impresionist art!

      5.)The character is king.

The characters are almost always the first thought in anime. The plot is usually secondary.

6.)Anime is usually serial entertainment... it ends.

Granted there are exceptions, such as Dragonball, that seem to go on forever, but most anime runs it's life of one 26 episode season and is done. Generally the stories are serials, they have continuity between episodes and reach an ultimate climax before they are finally resolved in the last episode. If a series is particularly popular, some additional OAV (straight to video) episodes will be made, but few series get the full sequel treatment.

So, if you liked the continuity aspects of Babylon 5, there may be something for you in anime.

7.) Anime is made for a the full range of age groups, lifestyles, and genders. Manga even moreso.

Some claim that anime is for adults, some claim that it's all kiddy stuff. The truth is that different anime are aimed at different target audiences. There are very different styles of anime aimed at little boys vs. little girls, teenage boys vs teenage girls, housewives vs salarymen, college students... etc.

Most anime is simply a story of wish-fulfillment for it's target audience. If you aren't in the target audience, you may very well think that it is crap. That being said, the very best anime (IMHO) is the anime that transcends mere wish-fulfillment and offers something meaningful even to viewers outside it's (usually very obvious) target audience. Of course, that could be said about any entertainment medium.

8.) Anime is from Japan. If you are a Gaijin, your mileage may vary.

Anime is made by people in Japan for people in Japan. There are jokes in anime that you won't get if you don't live in Japan. There are things that are acceptable in Japanese culture that may not be acceptable to your culture. Anime may very well seem strange to you. Certain aspects may stand out and seem like they are the sum total of all anime. They are not. Until you have watched a lot of anime, the subtleties that distinguish what is good and bad and different about each one may not be apparent.

As you learn the stylistic differences, cultural in-jokes, and even stereotypes, the viewing experience becomes even more enjoyable. Not only do you understand more what is going on, but you feel good for having recognised all of these things!

Free access to information... everyone, everywhere connected together. Arjuna deals with a girl who is tasked to save the world, but then she discovers that the true threat is mankind itself. Chobits is the story of a not-too-distant future, where computers come in all shapes and sizes, but mostly in the form of sexy androids. What purpose is the human relationship when your lifelike android can be programmed to be the perfect mate? What about the feelings of those who reject mechanical companionship, but find there is no human left to love them (the analogous situation described by a children's book, The City Where No-One Lives in the story). Finally, the Last Love Song is about a couple learning to love each other even as the world is literally falling apart around them as war ravages the planet, kills their friends, and finally seperates them.

Disney is also constrained by the radical Christian Right, who watch them like a beat cop watching a begger, looking for any excuse to rail them out of town. Remember the furor over "The Lion King", "Aladin", and "Pochihontis", not to mention Disneys ownership of Touchstone. Disney does in fact do a good job of producing bi-level films. I realy enjoyed "Lilo and Stich". As far as Anime, I think even the kid stuff is more mature in some regards then what would be done in the US. A very good example of this is "The Return of Mewtoo". I am not to sure why this is so. It might be due to the unimaginative marketing droids that have been responsible for most kids programming in the US. Fortunatly this has changed with no going back. Disneys "Gargoyls" had some fairly deep stories and some well developed characters. The Cartoon Network has done wonders. I am addicted to "Samarai Jack" even though it is episodic. That's a geek; there is a difference. The reason I'm asking is because I'm surprised by how many anti-anime posts appear in the anime topics. I've read that nerds have a tendency to like anime. I even read a book (I think it was by Susan Napier) that even stated that most students who are into anime are ones majoring in either computer science or electrical engineering. I also read on a wbesite that there is a well deserved stereotype of anime fan being either a college student majoring in a math or science degree or an older adult who is in the high tech industry. An interesting aspect I've noticed is that so far every anti-anime post that I've read and that gives reasons for not liking anime tries to assert that ALL anime has a certain small list of bad characteristics and nothing more. Now I'm not trying to convert anyone to anime, but saying that ALL anime is a certain way when you haven't even seen ALL anime is just plain ignorant. There is nothing inherent anime characteristic that prevents it from being good. All an anime is is a cartoon that was made by Japanese people. Are you trying to say that it's physically impossible for someone with Japanese ethnicity to make a good cartoon simply because that person is Japanese or because the story in question is animated? That's like saying that's physically impossible for an American to make a good live action movie simply because the person is American or because the movie is live action. The point I'd like to make is that unless you've seen every single anime ever made, you cannot rightfully say that ALL anime has a certain characteristic unless it's characteristic that is a part of or logically implied by the definition of anime (that being a cartoon from Japan). Maybe most of you anime nay-sayers wouldn't be fans of anime if you saw a decent, diverse amount of anime, but there is probably AT LEAST one anime that each nay-sayer would like.
