    Another poster got this right. DHL is the way to go if you can do it. This way your friend doesn't have to pay a local company, you can just pay DHL. They are the best.

    Pavel, ask your friend to contact a local forwarding company that can clear items through customs and ship them from the port of entry to other points within Russia. Sadly this is not cheap, but they will (if they are reliable) handle the, umm, details. There HAVE to be companies that collect foreign goods at Moscow and ship them via the Trans-Siberian Railroad. In other 3rd world places I've had to ship to, however, they take a big cut: $50 for paperwork .... more for storage ... then the shipping/delivery ... It's just bribery with invoices so it's legal. Usual risks apply of course, I guess if they swap rocks for computers at the airport there's almost nothing you can do... good luck

    I set my threshold to +2 while browsing Slashdot comments. {grin}

    I know the trolls are still there screaming but I don't have to deal with them as much. Sadly I'll miss some good comments too, but them's the breaks. Of course the jury is still out as to whether or not all of the calmness advantage is eliminated when I moderate browsing at -1 ...

    I don't have mod points today or I'd tag this post. I had no idea that this sort of thing was actually occurring in the real world (well, real-ish world, you can't call the military that real). Good thing the Yorktown wasn't in the Persian Gulf or the eastern Med or she could have been sunk by three guys in a Zodiac with an RPG-7. As a taxpayer, I'm outraged, yadablahblahblah.

    Why is this confusing? It's obvious to me even though ianal. Counter-suing (or suing a third party) is SOP in these sorts of disputes. If there's anybody even peripherally involved that might have deep pockets they get whacked with a lawsuit. That's why they have full-time legal staff. That's why we pay too much for everything, it's the litigation tax. DoH.

    sol.exe is (by default) one of the files on the "can't delete this" list for W2K. If you try and dispose of it without fixing this list first, it will come back, just like other critical system utilities.

    Block everything by default. Have the customers only be able to access a list of approved sites that you create in conjunction with their suggestions -- i.e. what they need, not based on someone else's predjudices. You can then review the suggestions. More work, but much more just -- and foolproof. No worries about the chicken breast recipe being blocked or chickenrecipes.com being a pr0n site. Have an interactive "suggest this site" page to easily allow users to suggest sites.

    Nifty! But you know, the real reason we still use seconds and minutes etc is because of the compatibility with our earth coordinate system (latitude and longitude, based on 360 degree circle, 60 minutes to a degree, 60 seconds to a minute). Makes navigation easier.

    To use a decimal time coordinate system we'd also need to develop a decimal earth coordinate. Which would also be nifty, but it would be niftier to develop one based on radians to make it easier to do the math. I can see it now : "What time is it?" "Pi. Break for lunch!"

    ... java also has the tcp/ip libraries and interfaces built in in a programmer friendly way (did Progress?), but in any event you are correct. If you're determined you can always write portable code. Tcl/Tk is another higher-level way of doing portable programs.

    sorry, you are quite correct. what was I thinking -- probably too much about work and less about the important stuff. Without Windows I would not be able to pump 500 rounds into the boss without getting arrested.
