    Very interesting, but what's been holding me back from acquiring an AMD CPU is that lack of a native compiler.

    In comparison to GCC, Intel's compilers produce 10-20% faster code when it comes to computationally intensive tasks. That marvellous piece of software truly pays itself off on an Intel architecture.

    I don't understand why AMD is not interested in producing a compiler (even by contributing to GCC) that would help them produce similar results.

    Why should the compaines allow "non-revenue clients sutch as Gaim" in their network? There's no profit in that if people start using adless clients or clients that filter out ads.

    And these companies were created as such - with all those resourcers in the beginning?

    Nope. They made their fortunes and there's nothing unfair about using the fruits of their success to maintain their marketshare via advertising (which I suppose you mean by "abusing their market position) and stopping freeloaders from abusing their network (="blocking normal competition"?).

    Put Windows codecs in /usr/win32

    Oh yeah.

    Your post is the epitome of what's wrong with open source.

    Steal codecs and suffer through configure, make, make install and friggin' path LD_LIBRARY_PATH configurations in .bashrc just to get something to work that takes ONE CLICK on Windows or Apple.

    Hooray for Open Source!

    Oh so GCC, one of the best compilers out there isn't good enough?

    On an ix86 maybe, but definitely not on alternative platforms. I used to run simulations on an Alpha and the code gcc produced was a complete waste of time. Similarly on Sun.

    Hell, even if I want to run numerically intensive code on ix86 I still have to buy Intel's compiler (a hint to your AMD-people out there: the lack of a native compiler for Athlons has kept me away from your CPUs) and the math libraries to get the 10-20% gain in performance over gcc.

    I downloaded them at my work (we are starting to use Linux servers) and didn't really have to even pay for the CD-Rs!

    Well, I concede your point. It was free - for you, that is. Yet, someone had to pay.

    In the terms of high-end scalability, uptime and support Solaris certainly outperforms Linux.

    However, I'd say that you need at least 8 CPUs or more to take full advantage of Sun's superior hardware/software architecture.

    Rememeber that lobbying is not just Microsoft's prerogative. RedHat & co. are free to lobby the parliament as well. They don't have the money? Well, too bad.

    Where do you think the local gene-pool got contributions from? From the neighbouring states, of course. It's the same thing near the Mexican border in the USA and in Flordia (Cuba), for instance.

    People are so used to seeing sharp geographical and national borders and to the underlying "us vs. them" mentality of a nation state that they expect that the character of the population change abruptly at the border.

    This, of course, is complete nonsense and only serves to emphasize how ridiculous the entire concept of a nation state is. Borders should be torn down. EU's Schengen-treaty (=no border checks within the union) is a good start, but that's only inside the EU. What we need is the complete dissolution of the national borders all around the world.

    Buy a Toshiba, Sony, IBM or other major Laptop without buying Windows.

    And you know why? Because most people would still buy Windows machines and as a result it would not be profitable to diversify the range of pre-installed operating systems.

    Sure Microsoft has made exclusive deals with the hardware manufacturers: if the OEM wants serious bulk discounts on the Windows, they must sell only Windows computers. But that's business! Blame the OEMs for signing such deals - don't blame Microsoft for doing smart business. RedHat and the others are free to propose similar schemes.

    What about people who work at an MS-only shop?

    That is a "problem" with the shop - not with Microsoft's software.

    Besides, if your workplace has a policy of only using software from a single manufacture - it makes sense to have a homogeneous envirnoment, you know - it's just that: a company policy. You do your work with the tools you've been given. Or do you perhaps complain about the color of your computer or your cubicle walls too?

    Or people who buy an OEM boxen and have Windows XP shoved in their face on first boot?

    So, you would like to coerce technically less adept people into making decisions about their operating system or even coerce them into installing it?

    If you insist on having Linux on your box, it's not really that hard to shove in a RedHat 9 disc and boot...
