  1. Re:Looks like I'll stay with Tiger then on Apple to Charge for Boot Camp? · · Score: 1

Everyone who's using bootcamp beta now, please reread all the documentation. Apple has already said they only released it in beta at all due to overwhelming interest. The original plan had been to only offer the capability upon the release of Leopard. They have always said, in no uncertain terms, that Bootcamp is a time-limited beta, that the final version will only be included with OS 10.5 when it ships, and if you choose not to purchase the new OS, the Bootcamp bootloader will cease to operate on September 30th, 2007.
When you first downloaded the beta software defined as "for evaluation purposes only" you knew you'd have to purchase Leopard to get the final version. If Apple decides to change their position and offer the final Leopard version of bootcamp for only $29 to tiger users who refuse to upgrade, that sounds pretty fair. Quit your complaining.

All Apple computers do come with a free 3-month trial of .Mac, and Apple frequently offers partial rebates on .Mac when it's purchased at the same time as a new machine ($30 or so)

They do try to ease new users into the .mac subscription fees.

For those who didn't RTFA, IBM is developing a way for you to take the portable HD you installed an OS onto from your computer and use it to boot another computer somewhere else, a function very familiar to Mac users who've been doing it pretty much since the FireWire port was invented, but is as yet not possible on WinTel/x86 machines. All I can say, It's About F***ing Time.

I'm having trouble understanding what's so complex about this? 1. buy old iMac $100 2. Buy 60GB HardDrive and install into iMac $50 3. Rip 650 CDs into iTunes 4. Share Music Folder & Library and Attach to Network $150 and about 30 minutes of time. Where's the confusion?

I converted to a mac five years ago, and I use Windows Update all the time. I just don't use it on my system. I use it weekly on friends' systems, company systems, extended family systems, neighbor systems, and all the other 90% of PC users stuck using the M$ Windows OS that I interact with.

I would think anyone on Slashdot has enough dealings with Windows PCs to run into WindowsUpdate regardless of their platform of choice.

Now if only I could get everyone around me, everyone I know to six degrees to just "switch" the world would live in harmony, without WindowsUpdate!

"unless they upgrade the technology (smaller process chip, high-tech cooling, etc)." Exactly my point. high-tech-cooling, which is what we're seeing used in the small enclosure of the iMac G4. Of course, it's not surprising that they'd have to use slower chips in the laptops than in the desktops. The whole industry has been doing that for a decade. My point is, it's visible progress in the "run-G5-chip-in-small-enclosure" effort, which will eventually yeild G5 powerbooks.

Judging by the enormous heatsinks required to cool the G5 PowerMacs, I'm frankly amazed that they crammed the unit into such a small compartment so soon. I think it bodes well for G5 powerbooks, which can't be far away now. Yesterday I would have expected early 2006 as the release date for G5 PBs, but now that looks to be pushed up. In the same "portability" token, I am particularly pleased with the portability of this new iMac. Though not a commonly desired feature in a desktop system, collapsing the foot under the unit, and dropping the wireless keyboard/mouse beside it, this is fully portable computer.

That's a valid point, but Apple is also in a war with Micro$oft's WMA to make their AAC the ubiquitous DRM format for music, and the market dominance of the iPod helps them accomplish this. If Apple allows RealNetworks the ability to play DRM .rm files on the iPod, they open the door to DRM .wma format on the iPod and their AAC format will fall into obsolescence.

I heard a story from a friend who visited India that they take a remarkably different approach over there. As I recall, it was customary to drive with only your parking lights on (to save energy, was his claim), until you glimpsed another vehicle, at which point you turned on your headlights. When the oncoming car was just about on you, you were supposed to hit your brights, with the intention of "making sure the other driver could see you." He swore it was the truth, though I never bought it for a second.

  12. Intel XServe on Dvorak Thinks Apple Will Switch to Intel · · Score: 1

All this hoopla about Jobs and Apple cozying up with Intel. I don't see an across the board transition to Intel chips as a logical extension of this. However, using itanium or even pentium processors in Xserve boxes, seem completely logical. Provide Mac OS X Server ease, Unix functionality, and an Intel core so as not to scare away administrators, and it's a great match. For that matter, all Mac OS X Server systems could become intel-based, which would provide a great opportunity for Apple to boost Business marketshare without cannibalizing the consumer lines.
