There was also the mere fact that Google's search engine was shockingly fast compared to the alternatives at the time and returned much more relevant content. You didn't want to use any other search engine and wait, wait, wait for dubious, and mostly garbage responses. Generally speaking, it made other search engines of the time irrelevant.

It's been my experience that 98% (or so) of patents are issued for non-novel ideals. It's merely a race to put a stake in the ground for future litigation (and mitigation of future litigation). What this has done is prevented or slowed firms, small and large, from innovating due to the threat of litigation. How much further ahead could we all be, technologically speaking, if ideas could be implemented without this black cloud hanging over people's heads? Instead we see the same regurgitated products, decade after decade, with with only incremental, and often unneeded or unwanted 'upgrades'.

Not necessarily. Windows Mobile is its 10th generation of major releases. It peaked in 2007 (the year the iPhone released) and has lost market share ever since. Windows Phone was supposed to be the iPhone killer. Well...at least Microsoft surpassed Blackberry is sales, for the first time, in 2013. A dubious honor.

...assuming he had any functional use within Luminant at all.

As an ex-Managing Director of one of the successful, pre-absorption companies, I can attest to the fact that he showed no presence at all, either in person or by directive.

Those with interests in EDS take note, watch this guy and make sure he takes an active role, or dish him quick. We saw nothing from the guy. They (Michael, Gil and their buddies in Houston) had no plan or discernable strategy even after months "on-the-job".

    His tenure epitomizes "dot-com failures".
