I think you are overestimating the effect of the inconvenience of copying as compared to the simple pleasure of owning, for example, a beautiful professionally printed book or a well-designed digipak CD. I do buy the music I like, even if it was available to me before for free, in CD quality digital audio. Were the prices more reasonable, I'd buy more.
ALSO, is there anything more COMPLETELY FUCKING STUPID than TEXT MESSAGING someone from a PHONE, where you could type less and ACTUALLY CALL THEM? GRRRRRRR......
My friend's GSM service allows him to select ~6 people to whom SMS's cost absolutely nothing, so there, although in other cases I tend to agree, but mostly 'cause replying an SMS will cost the other person too, whereas answering a domestic call won't.
If it only were so: after the initial month or so, they're usually on leave almost every weekend... unless of course they're FRDF or Special Forces..
I'd say it depends more on the price of gas, which here in Finland is something close to 4USD per gallon.
On the other hand, here the car itself would probably cost double due to taxation.
